The collection includes copies of photographs and drawings depicting Hayden in 1872, Hayden and his assistants in 1874, Hayden's assistants in 1924, the entire survey party at Yellowstone, and a cliff house photographed during the surveys. The collection includes one photograph made by William Henry Jackson.
Biographical/Historical note:
Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden (1829-1887) was a physician and geologist best known for his expeditions and geological surveys of the late 19th century. After the American Civil War, Hayden joined the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories (now the US Geological Surveys) and led the first congressionally-authorized explorations into the geology of the western territories. After receiving appropriations in 1867-1869 for exploration in Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado, Hayden presented a plan to Congress that outlined geological and geographical exploration and the creation of territorial maps. In 1871, Hayden led a geological survey into the Yellowstone area, during which photographer William Henry Jackson and painter Thomas Moran produced landscape artwork. As the geologist-in-charge of the USGS, Hayden was accompanied by his assistants, Jackson, William Henry Holmes, George Benjamin Chittenden, and Story B. Ladd.

Scope and Contents note:
Photographs collected by John Warren Beaman during Ferdinand Hayden's 1870 or 1871 geological surveys of the Yellowstone region. The photographs, probably made by William Henry Jackson, depict Plains people, possibly Wichita, as well as grass houses, a fence, and a dancer.
Biographical/Historical note:
John Warren Beaman (1845-1903) completed a three-year course at the Troy Polytechnic Institute in Civil and Mining Engineering and soon afterward began work as a meteorologist with Hayden's 1870 and 1871 surveys in Wyoming Territory, for which William Henry Jackson was the official photographer. After the 1871 Yellowstone Survey, Beaman began teaching at the Red Wing Collegiate Institute in Red Wing, Minnesota, after which he spent much of 1872 visiting Henry Elliott in the Pribilof Islands with his wife, Libby Beaman.

William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was an American painter, photographer and explorer. Born in New York, he sold drawings and retouched photographs from an early age. After serving in the Civil War, he opened a photography studio in Omaha, Nebraska, with his brother Edward. He was photographer for the US Geological and Geographical Surveys (1870-1878), documenting the American west and publishing the first photographs of Yellowstone. When the surveys lost funding in 1879, Jackson opened a studio in Denver, Colorado, and also worked for various railroad companies.

Scope and Contents note:
Photographs of skulls in the United States Army Medical Museum collection, which appear to have been collected for physical anthropological purposes. Included are archeological remains and remains of Native American tribes and some other ethnic groups. Other than tribe or location, data for the specimens include Army Medical Museum specimen number, AMM negative number, and sex; for some, there is also collection data and information on physical or medical conditions. There are also notes identifying donors who included army officers, physicians, scientists, and explorers such as Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden, Edward Palmer, Frederic Ward Putnam, George Rolleston, Paul Schumacher, and many others. Some of the photographs may have been made as part of the Army Medical Museumʹs program of distributing images of its specimens.

Represented are Africans, Chinook, Choptank, Dakota, Eskimo of Greenland, Taiwanese peoples, Hawaiians, Hidatsa, Nisqually, Philippine peoples, Ponca, Potowatomi, Pueblo, Tonkawa, and Ute. Archeological specimens are from the Aleutian Islands, California, the Dakotas, England (Roman period), Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, Peru, Vancouver Island, and Vermont. For some, there is also information about the status or physical condition of the individual or observations of medical conditions shown in the specimens. Some additional photographs appear to show specimens at the American Museum of Natural History.
Biographical/Historical note:
The United States Army Medical Museum (AMM, renamed the National Museum of Health and Medicine in 1989) was established by US Army Surgeon General William A. Hammond in 1862. Its initial focus was on collecting specimens of unusual pathology, mostly taken from victims of the American Civil War. By 1867, the museum had expanded to include medical, microsopical, anatomical, comparative anatomics, and other sections. The anatomical collection grew in part as a result of Circular No. 2 of 1867, which authorized military medical officers to collect cranial specimens from deceased Native Americans. Additionally, the AMM made an arrangement with the Smithsonian Institution, by which the Smithsonian transferred their collection of human remains in exchange for ethnological artifacts. AMM photographed and measured many of the specimens in its collection as part of the museum's anthropological research.
