Scope and Contents note:
Cabinet photographs, largely portraits, made by Baker and Johnston photographic studio. They may be part of a photographic series focusing on Shoshoni, Arapaho, and Apache people. Images include studio portraits of Black Coal, an Arapaho; Washakie, a Shoshoni chief; Sharpnose, an Arapaho; two Arapaho boys with bows and arrows; and Mollie, an Arapho woman posed with a baby in a carrier.
Biographical/Historical note:
Charles S. Baker and Eli Johnston operated the Baker and Johnston photographic studio out of Evanston, Wyoming, circa 1880s. The studio was known for its landscape and portrait photography, particularly images of Shoshone, Arapaho, and Apache people.

Jane Richardson Hanks (1908-2014) was an anthropologist who studied the Kiowa and Blackfoot Indians and the people of Thailand.

Papers kept by Jane Richardson Hanks relating to the friendship between her mother, Maud Wilkinson Richardson and the painter William Keith, measures 0.02 linear feet and consists of six items and date 1898 to 1905. Included is documentation on a painting Kilmeny that Keith gave to Wilkinson as a wedding gift upon her marriage to Leon J. Richardson in 1900. The painting, as well as Keith's nickname of "Kilmeny" for Maud were inspired by Maud's and Keith's admiration for the poem "Kilmeny" by Scottish author James Hogg written in 1813.

Due to the small size of this collection the papers are arranged as one series.

Biographical / Historical:
Jane Richardson Hanks was the daughter of Maud Wilkinson Richardson (1868-1946), a friend of painter William Keith (1838-1911). Hanks was a noted anthropologist born August 2, 1908. She died July 27, 2014 in Bennington, Vermont. Maud married Leon J. Richardson in 1900. They lived in Berkeley, California.
Provenance:
Donated in 2017 by Michael L. Heslip, a painting conservator who received the material from Jane Hanks when Heslip was treating the painting Kilmeny, at the time owned by Hanks.

Included are a letter from Keith postmarked June 15, 1898, addressed to Maud Wilkinson, Yosemite Valley, Marisposa, CA, thanking Maud for her "pleasant letter"; a letter from Keith to Mrs. Richardson, Berkeley, July 1, 1905, thanking her for thinking of him at "Xmas time" and wishing her "many Xmas and Happy New Years in the future"; and a note enclosing a photograph of Keith in his studio with the painting Kilmeny and requesting "When 'Kilmeny' comes to town if she will come to the studio." Also found is a pocket-sized book, The Story of James Hogg the Ettrick Shepherd (cover stamped 'Bought on board the 'Columba' Royal Route to the Highlands'), containing Hogg's poem "Kilmeny." The book includes an inscription from Keith "For Berkeley's Kilmeny." The inside cover is annotated by Hanks "This is the story of William Keith's painting dedicated to my mother Maud Wilkinson. This is the large painting with the driftwood frame."
