This accession consists of records documenting the research activities and professional files of National Zoological Park (NZP) research scientist and population manager,
Dr. Jonathon D. Ballou. Dr. Ballou's research for the NZP Center for Conservation and Evolutionary Genetics, and its predecessors, the Office of Zoological Research (circa
1973-1982), the Department of Zoological Research and Education (1984-1985), the Department of Zoological Research (1986-2000), and the Department of Conservation Biology
(2001-2003), primarily consisted of captive breeding techniques; population management and viability analysis; conservation genetics; and the formulation of reintroduction
plans for endangered species. Additional materials concern the development of database software for the management of animal pedigree data; the administration of research
activities; and involvement in professional activities.
Topics documented within this accession include the conservation of the golden lion tamarin, the black-footed ferret, the Florida panther, and the giant panda. Materials
include research data and analysis; lecture notes; clippings; brochures; studbooks; correspondence and memoranda; photographic slides and other images; meeting notes and agendas;
