Letter, written by Carl Auer Von Welsbach to the Austrian Gas and Electric Company, February 23, 1890. It records his sale to that utility of the gaslight mantle he invented.
Biographical / Historical:
Baron Carl Auer von Welsbach was born in Vienna, September 1858. He studied at the Vienna Polytechnic and at Heidelberg. In 1885 he patented an incandescent gas mantle which gave gas a new lease on life for illumination in the face of growing competition from electricity. He sold the patent to the Austrian Gas and Electic Company in 1890. Welsbach died August 1929.
