An interview of Joni Gordon conducted 2002 July 8-Sept. 23, by Paul Karlstrom, for the Archives of American Art, in Gordon's home, Los Angeles, Calif.
She discusses her personal and educational background; the origins and purposes of Newspace Gallery; her experiences with the Ferus Gallery, Esther Robles Gallery, Frank Perls Gallery, and Felix Landau Gallery. Gordon also discusses her friendship with Betty Asher and Betty Parsons, who became her mentor in the gallery business. She relates that her interest in the promotion of local comtemporary artists led her along with her husband, Monte, and Robert Smith to organize the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art (LAICA).

The collection documents John McLaughlin's personal life and career through biographical material, correspondence, writings, Tamarind Lithography fellowship files, scattered personal business records, printed materials, preliminary sketches and designs, and photographic material.
Scope and Contents:
The papers of Southern California art dealer and abstract painter John McLaughlin measure 3.2 linear feet and date from 1922 to 1979, bulk 1936 to 1976. The collection documents John McLaughlin's personal life and career through biographical material, correspondence, writings, Tamarind Lithography fellowship files, scattered personal business records, printed materials, preliminary sketches and designs, and photographic material.

Biographical material includes McLaughlin's military service records, art awards, and resumes.

Correspondence is with friends, artists, museums, and galleries. Notable correspondents include Eugene Anderson, Karl Benjamin, Frederick Hammersley, Jules Langsner, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, and others.

Writings include artist statements, lectures, and notes. Researchers will find McLaughlin's ideas about his work and aesthetics are also referenced in much of the correspondence. There are also writings about McLaughlin by others.

The Tamarind Lithography fellowship files consists of the letter of appointment, printed material, and profiles for fellow artists at the workshop.

Personal business records include assorted legal and financial papers, such as contracts with galleries, art loan agreements, consignment records, and art shipment expenses. There are business papers about McLaughlin's Japanese print gallery, The Tokaido, Inc.

Printed material consists of exhibition catalogs for McLaughlin's shows at the Andre Emmerich Gallery, Felix Landau Gallery, a retrospective at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1968, and the seminal 1959 Four Abstract Classicists exhibition in Los Angeles, among others. Also included are exhibition announcements, news clippings, and press releases.

Artwork includes annotated sketches, collages and designs for paintings, and one painting.

Photographs, negatives, and slides are of McLaughlin, artwork, and exhibition installations. There is one album of photographs from a 1963 retrospective exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum.

Biographical / Historical:
John Dwyer McLaughlin (1898-1976) was best known as one of the leading Los Angeles "hard-edge" geometric abstractionist painters and one of the artists featured in the seminal 1959 exhibition "Four Abstract Classicists" curated by Jules Langsner. McLaughlin was also a dealer of Japanese art prints.

McLaughlin was born and educated in Massachusetts. He served in the United States Navy during World War I from 1917-1921 and married Florence Emerson in 1928. McLaughlin began painting around 1932 with no formal training. In 1935, the couple moved to Japan and lived there for several years before moving back to Boston, where they opened The Tokaido, Inc., a Japanese art print gallery. From this time up to the start of World War II, McLaughlin worked primarily as a print dealer. During World War II, he served as a language intelligence officer in the Marines, thanks to his knowledge of Japanese.

After the war, McLaughlin and his wife settled in Dana Point, California, where he began painting in earnest, gaining some early local success. His painting, Hope Deferred was awarded first prize for oil painting in the 1948 San Diego Art Guild Annual. He became associated with the Felix Landau Gallery in Los Angeles and was one of four painters included in the historic 1959 Four Abstract Classicists, exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art organized by critic Jules Langsner which also featured the work of Frederick Hammersley, Lorser Feitelson, and Karl Benjamin. The phrase "hard-edge painting" was first used in association with this exhibition as a description of a unique California style of geometric abstractionist painting.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s McLaughlin exhibited widely and became a mentor for many younger Los Angeles area reductive painters. He was admired for his integrity and independent position regarding the art market. John McLaughlin died in Dana Point, California in 1976 at the age of 77.

Provenance:
The John McLaughlin papers were donated to the Archives of American Art in multiple installments. John McLaughlin donated material in 1973 and his widow Florence McLaughlin donated material in 1976. Additional papers were donated by the artist's nephew John McLaughlin in 1998 and 1999. A painting was donated 2015 by the Stephne' Hesen estate.

Palmer discusses his family background and childhood in New York City; early exposure to art exhibitions; music appreciation; attending New York University; taking classes with Winhold Reiss, Meyer Shapiro, Richard Offner, and Heinrich Wolfflin; his master's thesis on Paul Cezanne's paintings of Mount Saint Victoire; moving to California; learning to fly; meeting Lillian, his wife; founding Feigen-Palmer Gallery with Richard Feigen; other galleries in the area, including Irving Blum, David Stuart, Felix Landau, Charles Garabedian, and Joan Ankrum; Monday Night Art Walks; John Cage and David Tudor performance pieces; the many artists he's exhibited; Andy Warhol's "The Kiss"; 1968 split with Richard Feigen to become the Herbert Palmer Gallery; the theft of a Picasso sculpture in Dec. 1981 and the ensuing legal case, which involved numerous galleries and collectors; his longstanding friendships with Gordon Onslow Ford, Lee Mullican, and Wolfgang Paalen; membership to the Art Dealers Association of California; and his enjoyment of discovering art, old and new. Palmer also recalls Henriette Riess, Harold Stevenson, Lucienne Bloch, Bridget Riley, Vasa Mihich, Maillol, Red Grooms, Norman Bluhm, and others.

Biographical / Historical:
The Alan Gallery was established by Charles Alan in 1952. In 1966, Felix Landau purchased the gallery and renamed it the Landau-Alan Gallery. After Alan left in 1969, the name was changed to the Felix Landau Gallery.

Donated 1971 and in 1973 by Charles Alan the founder of the Alan Gallery.

Series includes many of Solomon's writings on art and artists, such as essays ultimately published in exhibition catalogs, and/or magazines and journals, as well as notes used in the course of his writing, which date back to his time as a student and teaching assistant.

At the beginning of the series is a bibliography of Solomon's writings with a set of related notes on index cards, compiled circa 1969. Articles and essays include writings on individual artists such as Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, and on the changing American art scene, including "New York: The Second Breakthrough," and "The New American Art," many of which were ultimately published in exhibition catalogs. Published catalogs are housed with the corresponding manuscript drafts where such records exist.

The series also includes drafts of Solomon's text for the book New York: The New Art Scene, in addition to the book's dust jacket, a section of the published book (pages 225-256), and prints of photographs, and photocopies of photographs, taken by Ugo Mulas for the book. Subjects include Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns and Tatyana Grosman, Frederick Kiesler with Baby Jane Holzer and Andy Warhol, Debby Hay, the New York Police stopping a dance party at Andy Warhol's Factory, Claes and Patty Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol in his studio with Philip Fagan and Gerard Malanga.

Also found are three bound volumes containing what appear to be related typescripts and notes, possibly representing a book Solomon was working on, with the title "Romanzo."

Typescripts of five lectures from the 1950s are followed by university writings, including Solomon's honors thesis on Odilon Redon, and his dissertation on Pablo Picasso. Published catalogs and other writings include published articles or catalogs with introductions written by Solomon, such as those for two exhibitions at the Andrew Dickson White Museum of Art, Picasso: The Graphic Work (1959) andFantasy in the Prints of Goya (1960); a catalog for a 1965 Mary Baumeister exhibition; an article by Solomon entitled "Bennington Artists: The Green Mountain Boys," published in the August 1966 issue of Vogue; and the catalog for Tony Delap: The Last Five Years, 1963-1968 (1969) at Felix Landau Gallery.

Notes include what appear to be seven sets of index cards, four on various artists and other subjects, arranged alphabetically, and three on the individual subjects of Picasso, Van Gogh, and Vuillard. Also found are notes on American architecture, Chinese art, and other miscellaneous subjects, and a notebook which includes drafts of letters concerning day-to-day business and work on exhibitions, includingAmerican Painting Now.
