Chronological Name and Subject Files

Collection Creator:
Hitchcock, Henry-Russell, 1903-1987  Search this
Extent:
21.9 Linear feet (Boxes 1-22)
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1919-1987
Scope and Contents note:
Files consist of Henry-Russell Hitchcock's personal and professional correspondence, as well as subject files relating to academic research, teaching, curatorial interests, and professional associations. Subject files are comprised mainly of correspondence and printed material, with a small number of photographs that mostly relate to exhibitions and writings. After 1932, copies of Hitchcock's outgoing letters are almost always included, making the files from 1932-1987 almost complete.

The correspondence includes large numbers of letters from prominent architectural historians, architects, artists, preservationists, museum directors and curators. Also included is correspondence with students, friends, relatives, publishers, and representatives of organizations and institutions.

Among the correspondents of note are: Bernard Berenson, Eugene Berman, Leonid Berman, Lyonel Feininger, Brendan Gill, Robert Goldwater, George Howe, Lincoln Kirstein, J. J. P. Oud, Erwin Panofsky, Kingsley Porter, Paul J. Sachs, R. M. Schindler, Theodore Sizer, E. Baldwin Smith, Peter van der Meulen Smith, James Soby, Victor Spark, Harold Sterner, John Summerson, Virgil Thomson, Paul Vanderbilt, Theo Van Doesburg, Helmut von Erffa, and Gordon Washburn. Other important correspondents represented in a decade or more of correspondence include: Jere Abbott, Winslow Ames, Everett A. (Chick) Austin, Alfred H. Barr, Agnes Rindge Claflin, John Coddington, Walter Cook, John Coolidge, Henry (Harry) Sayles Francis, George Heard Hamilton, Ada Louise Huxtable, Philip C. Johnson, William Jordy, George N. Kates, Edgar Kauffmann, Jr., Richard Krautheimer, Phyllis W. Lehmann, Thomas J. McCormick, Agnes Mongan, Lewis Mumford, Nikolaus Pevsner, A. Kinglsey Porter, Willebald Sauerlander, Vincent Scully, Helen Searing, James Thrall Soby, Dorothy Stroud, John Summerson, Virgil Thomson, Emily Tremaine, Paul Vanderbilt, Rudolph Wittkower, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

See Appendix for a list of individuals, organizations, and subjects in Series 2
Arrangement note:
Files are arranged with a single alphabet for each year.
Appendix: Individuals, Organizations, and Subjects in Series 2:
Below is an index to individuals, institutions, organizations, and a small number of subject files, found in Series 2: Alphabetical Files. The index indicates the name and the alphabet year(s) in which each can be found.

Hitchcock did not follow strict alphabetical schema when organizing his files and filing eccentricities for the letters D, M, N, and V are explained below. The original arrangement has been left in place due to the difficulties and time involved in re-arranging the material within multiple alphabets.

Note on filing order for D's: Names beginning with the prefix "de" (e.g. De Cordova) are all filed before names beginning with the letters "de" e.g. Deerfield Academy.

Note on filing order for M's: Names beginning with the prefix "Mac" and "Mc" are all filed after names beginning with Ma. They are interfiled according to the first and subsequent letters following the prefix e.g. McIntyre, Mackay, McKean, MacLaren.

Note on filing order for N's: Proper names beginning with the word "new" (e.g. New American Library) are all filed before names incorporating the syllable "new" e.g. Newark Public Library.

Note on filing order for V's: Names beginning with the prefix "van" (e.g. Van Derpool) are all filed before names beginning with the syllable "van" e.g. Vancouver Hotel.

Scope and Contents:
The folder includes several worksheets and a detailed history/description of the property prepared for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation.
General:
Situated along the Hudson River, Seven Oaks was originally developed as a 25-acre estate in the 19th century. Historically the grounds have featured open fields and dense, wooded areas, as well as numerous gardens. Although about 10 wooded acres were subdivided by the early 1990s, the Gothic Revival estate house, built in 1862, remains, as well as several Gothic Revival outbuildings and a more modern machine shop. In the 20th century a long greenhouse was added to the coachman's residence, but the core property remains essentially unaltered. Originally owned by the Park family, the estate passed in 1911 into the possession of Seth Fox, a New York City merchant. The Fox family used Seven Oaks as a summer place until the early 1920s, when they made it their year-round residence. The Fox family was also responsible for developing Seven Oaks' gardens, which are documented in this collection.
Persons associated with the garden include: Charles F. Park (former owner, ca. 1860-1911); Seth Fox (former owner, 1911-?); and Arthur Woodward Fox and Ada Augusta Treadwell Fox (former owners).

Scope and Contents:
The exhibition records of the Contemporary Study Wing of the Finch College Museum of Art measure 20.9 linear feet and date from 1943 to 1975, with the bulk of records dating from the period its galleries were in operation, from 1964 to 1975. Over two-thirds of the collection consists of exhibition files, which contain a wide range of documentation including artist files, checklists, correspondence, writings, photographs, interviews, numerous films and videos, artist statements, printed materials, and other records. Also found within the collection are administrative records of the museum, artist files, and papers of the Contemporary Wing's director and curator, Elayne Varian, which were produced outside of her work at Finch College.

Administrative records include records relating to the general operation of the Contemporary Wing concerning fundraising, professional associations, budget, contact information for artists, donors, and lenders to exhibitions. Also found are records of the permanent collection of artworks acquired by the museum between 1964 and 1975 from contemporary artists and collectors of contemporary art.

Artist files contain basic biographical information on over 150 contemporary artists, with scattered correspondence, photographs, technical information about artworks, artist statements, and other writings. Artist files also include an incomplete run of artist questionnaires gathered by the New York Arts Calendar Annual for 1964.

Elayne Varian's personal papers include curatorial records, a course schedule and syllabus related to her teaching activities, and various writings. Curatorial projects documented in Varian's papers include three programs produced outside of Finch College, including a juried show at the New York State Fair in 1967, a film series at Everson Museum of Syracuse University, and an exhibition at Guild Hall in East Hampton in 1973. Several of Varian's writing projects involved interviews, which are also found in this series in the form of sound recordings and transcripts. Interview-based writing projects include individual profiles on Brian O'Doherty and Babette Newberger, and interviews conducted for an article on the artist-dealer relationship published in Art in America (January 1970). Dealers interviewed for the latter project include Leo Castelli, Virginia Dwan, John Gibson, Richard Feigen, Arnold Glimcher, Fred Mueller, Martha Jackson, Sidney Janis, Betty Parsons, Seth Siegelaub, and Howard Wise. Artists interviewed include Roy Lichtenstein, Adolph Gottlieb, and Charles Ross.

Exhibition files, comprising the bulk of the collection, document exhibitions held in the Contemporary Wing during its existence from 1964 to 1975. Types of records found in the series include exhibition catalogs, correspondence, loan agreements, lists, contact information, insurance valuations of artworks, photographs, biographical information on artists, clippings, posters, press releases, and other publicity materials. In addition to the rich textual and photographic records found for exhibitions, numerous audiovisual recordings are also found, some of which were made in preparation for an exhibition, some document mounted exhibitions, and others are artworks themselves or components of artworks exhibited in the galleries. Interviews with artists, dealers, and others involved in exhibitions include Alan Sonfist, Mel Bochner, Hans Richter, Ruth Richards, James Brooks and Janet Katz, Margaret Benyon, Irwin Hollander (transcript only), David Anderson, Doris Chase, Will Insley, Michael Kirby, Les Levine, Ursula Meyer, Brian O'Doherty, Charles Ross, Tony Smith, Douglas Davis, Jane Davis, Russ Connor, Les Levine, Michael Mazur, Paul Gedeohn, and physicists Lloyd G. Cross, Allyn Z. Lite, and Gerald Thomas Bern Pethick. Video artworks, recordings of performances, or components of multimedia artworks are found by artists Vito Acconci, Kathy Dillon, Douglas Davis, Dan Graham, Les Levine, Bruce Nauman, Michael Netter, Eric Siegel, and Robert Whitman. A film of the Art in Process: The Visual Development of a Structure (1966) exhibition is found, and video recordings of artists Lynda Benglis, Michael Singer, and Sam Wiener form as part of the documentation for the Projected Art: Artists at Work (1971) exhibition.

Biographical / Historical:
The Contemporary Study Wing of the Finch College Museum of Art, later called simply the "Contemporary Wing," was established in 1964 by the president of Finch College, Roland De Marco, as an extension the Finch College Museum of Art in New York City.

Its mission was to educate art history students at the Manhattan women's college who were interested in working with contemporary art. DeMarco, himself an art collector, hired Elayne Varian as director and curator of the contemporary wing. DeMarco met Varian in the New York office of the prominent international art dealership Duveen Brothers, where she had worked since the mid-1940s, most recently as an art dealer. Varian received her art education in Chicago, where she studied art history and education at the University of Chicago, and took classes in film at the Bauhaus and in fine art the Art Institute of Chicago. Sensitive to emerging art movements in galleries and studios around the city of New York, as the contemporary wing's curator, Varian quickly established a reputation for thoughtfully conceived, cutting-edge exhibitions which were consistently well-received by the press.

Under Varian, the Contemporary Wing carried out a dual mission of showing work of living artists and educating students and the public about the artwork and museum work in general. Varian used the galleries to provide practical training to students interested in a gallery or museum career throughout its existence. For several years, she also maintained an assistantship position for post-graduate museum professionals to gain experience in the field, many of whom went on to careers in museums across New York State.

The Contemporary Wing's best-known exhibitions formed a series of six shows called Art in Process, held between 1965 and 1972. Each of the Art in Process shows took a different medium, including painting, sculpture, collage, conceptual art, installation art, and serial art, and brought the process of art-making into the gallery with the artworks in various ways. For example, for Art in Process V (1972), the show about installation art, the galleries were open to the public for the entire process of its installation, allowing visitors to watch the works take shape. Another show entitled Documentation (1968) exhibited artworks with documentation such as artist's notes, sales records, and conservation records, bringing to light the value of record-keeping in the visual arts. Two exhibitions entitled Projected Art were also innovative, with the first (1966-1967) bringing experimental films from the cinema to the galleries, and the second (1971) showing artists' processes via footage and slides of artists working. Another show, Artists' Videotape Performances (1971), involved both screening of and creation of works in the gallery using a range of experiments with recent video technology. The museum also participated in an experimental broadcast of an artwork entitled Talk Out! by Douglas Davis, in which a telephone in the gallery allowed visitors to participate in its creation while it was broadcast live from Syracuse, NY. Other exhibitions that showcased experimentation in art included N-Dimensional Space (1970), on holography in art, Destruction Art(1968), on destructive actions being incorporated into contemporary art-making, and Schemata 7 (1967), a show about the use of environments in contemporary art, whose working title was "Walk-in Sculpture."

Other popular exhibitions at the Contemporary Wing included shows on Art Deco (1970) and Art Nouveau (1969). Several shows mined the private collections of prominent contemporary art collectors including Martha Jackson, Betty Parsons, George Rickey, Paul Magriel, Jacques Kaplan, Josephine and Philip Bruno, and Carlo F. Bilotti. A number of exhibitions featured contemporary art from overseas including Art from Belgium (1965), Art from Finland (1973), Seven Swedish Painters (1965), and Art in Jewelry (1966), which featured mainly international jewelry artists. Retrospective exhibitions of Hans Richter, Hugo Weber, and James Brooks were also held.

Hundreds of contemporary artists were shown at the Contemporary Wing in the eleven years of its existence, including many who came to be leading figures in contemporary art, and some who already were, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Mel Bochner, Eva Hesse, Lynda Benglis, Bruce Nauman, Robert Morris, Lawrence Weiner, Robert Smithson, Sol Le Witt, Dan Flavin, Philip Pearlstein, and Yayoi Kusama, to name just a few.

The Contemporary Wing and the entire Finch College Museum of Art shut its doors in 1975, when Finch College closed due to lack of funds. The permanent collection was sold at that time, and the proceeds were used to pay Finch College employee salaries. Elayne Varian went on to the position of curator of contemporary art at the John and Mabel Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida. She died in 1987.

General:
Sonnenberg was the summer home of Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson, who purchased the property in 1863. A 40-room Queen Anne style mansion was built between 1885 and 1887, while the gardens as they exist today were developed between 1903 and 1920. Initially, Boston landscape architect Ernest Bowditch and subsequently his assistant John Handrahan (who worked independently for Mrs. Thompson after about 1903) were responsible for their creation along with other individuals including K. Wadamori (the Japanese garden) and Francis Allen (the Roman bath). Besides the Japanese garden and Roman bath, garden areas include a formal Italian garden, a blue and white garden, a rose garden, an old-fashioned garden, and a rock garden. Specimen trees punctuate the flowing lawns, while a Lord & Burnham conservatory and greenhouse complex is a highlight of the property. Following Mary Thompson's death in 1923 the property passed to her nephew, Emory Clark, who in turn sold it to the United States Government in 1931. In 1973 the non-profit "Sonnenberg Gardens" organization acquired the core 52 acres of the property, including the gardens and mansion, which were opened to the public. Various restoration efforts ensued, including those of landscape architect Noreda A. Rotunno, and in 2005 the estate became the fifth state historic park in New York State.
Persons associated with the property include Mary Lee Clark Thompson (former owner, 1863-1923); Frederick Ferris Thompson (former owner, 1863-1899); Emory Clark (former owner, 1923-1931); Ernest W. Scope and Contents:
The folder includes worksheets, histories of the property and owner families, brochures, garden club notes and records, and photocopies of articles.
General:
The late Federal/early Greek Revival Pruyn House has public gardens planted and maintained by two garden clubs, the Fort Orange Garden Club, designers of the cutting and habitat gardens, and the Blue Creek Garden Club, which installed and maintained the herb garden until 2009. The gardens feature continuous bloom for the enjoyment and education of the public and to provide plant materials for arrangements in Pruyn House. Traditional annuals and perennials have been propagated elsewhere by members of the garden committee, and they also conduct trial plantings of new or unusual varieties of flowers. The herb garden is arranged formally in rectangular and curved beds around a central circular bed with a sundial. Originally the cutting garden had 14 rectangular beds in a 40 by 80 foot plot with the historic tool shed, which has been renovated. The planting scheme has been modified over the years to remove varieties that were not suited to the sandy soil or the severe winters. The plants are labeled and a comprehensive list is located in the tool shed for the garden's visitors. The habitat garden was created in 2007 to attract monarch butterflies, and features milkweed and brightly colored annuals and perennials.
The original 700 acre property was acquired in 1632 from Native American tribes by Kiliaen Van Rensselaer (b.1580-d.1643) of Holland. There were tenant farmers on the land until 1846 when New York State outlawed the feudal land tenancy system. Over the years the size of the property has been reduced but the land continued to be farmed and gardened by subsequent owners. In 1983 the property was purchased by the Town of Colonie and was placed on the National and State registers of Historic Places in 1985.
Persons associated with the garden include: Stephen Van Rensselaer III (former owner, 1785-1839); Casparus Pruyn (former owner, 1839-1846); Alfred Mayall (former owner, 1849-1866); John L. Henkes (former owner, 1866-1893); John J. Scope and Contents:
The file includes 9 35mm slides, worksheets, photocopies of printed information about the garden, and photocopies of photographs of the garden from the New York State Historical Association library.
General:
Fernleigh, the country home of the Clark family since the 19th century, is situated along both sides of the Susquehanna River, linked by a footbridge. The house, only part of which remains, was a Second Empire stone mansion designed by New Jersey architect James Van Dyke and built in 1869. The original garden was located to the south of the mansion and included a servants' house and Turkish bath. In 1923 Stephen Clark commissioned Marcus T. Reynolds to design new gardens for Fernleigh. Reynolds incorporated his love for Italian villas into the plans. When they were completed in 1929, the new Fernleigh gardens had terraces, balustrades, a fountain, and a swimming pool, which was placed on the site of the original garden. The garden architecture included a wrought-iron casino, pavilions, iron trellises, and bird cages. Reynolds' design centered the mansion, servants' house, and Turkish bath around the swimming pool and terraces. Period photographs show that the property was used extensively for lawn parties, fairs, and other recreational activities. Reynolds was reponsible for the terraced plan for the garden, while Bryant Fleming, a landscape design professor at Cornell, drew up the planting plans. Planted beds are evident in the period photographs. Today, only a portion of the Fernleigh mansion remains. The Turkish bath is gone and the swimming pool has been replaced with grass. The wrought-iron casino and fountain still stand. Containers of large topiaries are placed in the garden during the summer months. Planted beds are not used, although some permanent plantings exist.
Persons associated with the garden include: the Clark family (owners, 1869 to date); James Van Dyke (architect, 1868); Henry Hardenburgh (architect, 1870s); Marcus T. Reynolds (architect and landscape architect, 1923-1929); Bryant Fleming (landscape designer, 1920s); and Christi Vadnais (artist od mural in pavilion, 1995).

General:
This Hillwood was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Edward F. Hutton. After the Hutton's divorce in 1935, Hillwood became the property of Marjorie (formerly Mrs. Hutton) and her second husband Joseph E. Davies. Mrs. E. F. Hutton, after several divorces, was later known as Mrs. Marjorie Merriweather Post. Long Island University bought the property in 1947 to use it as one of their off-campus locations. Classes began in the mansion in 1951. The University then named the property after Marjorie Merriweather Post's father, Charles William Post, to become C. W. Post College. In 1955, Mrs. Post built a separate estate in Washington, DC, and named it "Hillwood." This is now Hillwood Museum and Gardens.
(The Fine Arts Center, located on the college property, was originally owned by Mr. E.F. Hutton, who built it after his divorce from Marjorie. He hired Marian Coffin to design this property as well.)
Persons and organizations associated with this garden include: Mr. and Mrs. William A. Prime (former owners, 1911); Mr. and Mrs. Edward F. Hutton (former owners, 1921-ca.1940); Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Scope and Contents:
The folder includes worksheets, features map, planting plans, historical images and other documentation as well as 21 digital images.
General:
Established circa 1910, Scragwood Garden is located on one third of an acre in Willsboro, New York. The property lies on what was once a large land tract owned by the Clark family that dates back to the mid-1800s. The garden is adjacent to the Scragwood home, a clapboard house with elements of the Gothic Revival Style, built circa 1842. From 1857 to 1895 it was the home of Solomon Wesley Clark, Rhoda Adsit Clark and their seven children. Solomon Clark operated an extensive limestone quarry which furnished stones for the foundations of the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York State Capitol. Scragwood Garden's establishment is attributed to Florence Tanner Wood, the wife of Charles Fiske Wood, Solomon's grandson. Scragwood Garden was abandoned following Florence's death in 1945. The original plan for the garden was discovered in 2003. Restoration of the garden's traditional Colonial Revival pattern was begun in 2004 and completed in 2012.
The perimeters of Scragwood Garden are defined by low limestone walls. The garden is divided into five parterres separated by paths of blue limestone. The paths converge at a diamond shape in the center, marked by a sundial and centerpiece of Lake Champlain stones. During the restoration, perennials found still growing on the grounds were kept and reset if necessary. These include varieties of Dutch iris, daffodils, narcissus, thistle, lupine, pink and white phlox, hens and chicks, and century plants. The garden was restored with close attention to the plantings noted on the original drawings. Some plants from the original plan will not thrive in the current climate, and annuals have been included to compensate.
Scragwood Garden is visited by garden clubs, historians and other groups and individuals who are particularly interested in vernacular Colonial Revival gardens.
Persons associated with the garden include: Charles Fiske Wood (former owner, 1920-1943); and Florence Tanner Wood (garden designer, circa 1910).

Original documents pertaining to the Clark family are located in the private collection of the current owner of the property.
