Biographical / Historical:
Painter and educator; New York, N.Y. Born in Russia. Studied at Francisco Ferrer School, with Robert Henri, and with George Bellows. Came to United States in 1908. Taught at the Art Students League. Died 1980.
Provenance:
Material on reel D295 lent 1966 by Robert Brackman. Portions of this material were subsequently given by Brackman's widow, Frances, with her gift of all other materials, 1981. Twenty-seven personal photographs from reel 2380 were returned to Frances Brackman at her request.

Biographical / Historical:
Siri Berg is a collage artist, painter, and art instructor in New York, New York. Born in the 1930s in Stockholm, Sweden. Siri Berg is on the faculty of The New School, Parsons School of Design in New York.

Scope and Contents:
Reynolds Beal material includes a sketchbook containing sketches of ships, entitled "Cruising Aboard U.S.S. School Ship St. Mary's," 1901, scrapbook pages of marine etchings and photographs, a Christmas card, personal photographs, exhibition catalogs, and clippings. Gifford Beal material includes: photographs of him and one of his work, exhibition catalogs, and clippings. Also included are a photograph of the Beal family, ca. 1890, writings about the the family, selected photographs of the Beals from albums kept by Mrs. Thaddeus Beal, including some of Wilellyn, the William Beal family's summer home in Newburgh, N.Y. with gardens designed by sons Gifford and Reynolds, and Echo Lawn, home of Thaddeus Beal; and miscellaneous printed material.

A marriage certificate, 1926; notes concerning "The Modern Dilema in Art," an essay "Music and the Fourth Dimension"; writings about Belmont, 1969-1971, by his wife, Elsie; a receipt; photographs of Belmont and his art work, and slides of his color music expressions; a sketchbook and 18 sketches; exhibition catalogs and announcements, 1924-1951; clippings, 1929-1964; and a copy of The Manifestodes Peintres du Groupe "Les Artistes Musicalists." Seventy-two subject files contain Elsie Belmont's letters to various museums asking them to accept her husband's work, and some information on her gallery, The Belmont Galleries, 1941-1982.

Scope and Contents:
Primarily photographs; also clippings and writings concerning artists, mostly around the turn-of-the century. The items were gathered by Don Becker's mother, Fanny Granger-Dow, a student of William Merritt Chase and close friend to Edwin Blashfield and other artists of the period. In addition to Chase and Blashfield, other artists represented include Paul Wayland Bartlett, William Merritt Chase, F. Luis Mora, Auguste Rodin, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and Paul Swan.
Photographs are of Paul Wayland Bartlett in his studio (signed by Bartlett, 1908); a work of art by Edwin Howland Blashfield; a painting by Douglas Volk annotated to Blashfield "compliments of Samuel Shaw" and signed by 18 artists, including Daniel Chester French and John LaFarge, 1899; William Merritt Chase instructing a class at his New York art school and one of students in Chase's portrait class; works by F. Luis Mora; works by Auguste Rodin (one is annotated "A mon ami Monsieur Brownelle" and signed by Rodin); the Farragut Monument (signed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens); and three of Paul Swan in his studio.
Also found are a 1949 recital announcement; two clippings about Chase (1916); an obituary and a nine-page manuscript about Mora by Fanny Granger-Dow entitled "Character Sketches of Some of Our Younger Artists"; three magazine clippings with cartoons about artists; and a 1904 exhibition catalog for the Fifth Annual Exhibition of the American Society of Miniature Painters.
Provenance:
The collection was originally assembled by Fanny Granger-Dow, the mother of donor Don Becker. She was a student of William Merritt Chase and the family knew many artists of the period.
