The papers include correspondence, diaries, art inventories, scrapbooks of clippings on James McNeil Whistler and other press clippings, financial material, architectural drawings, and photographs.
Correspondence, circa 1860-1921, includes Freer's correspondence, 1876-1920, with artists, dealers, collectors, museums, and public figures; letterpress books contain copies of Freer's outgoing letters, 1892-1910; correspondence collected by Freer of James McNeill Whistler, and his wife Beatrix, 186?-1909, with Lady Colin Campbell, Thomas R. Way, Alexander Reid, Whistler's mother, Mrs. George W. Whistler, and others; correspondence of Whistler collector Richard A. Canfield, 1904-1913, regarding works in Canfield's collection; and correspondence of Freer's assistant, Katharine Nash Rhoades, 1920-1921, soliciting Freer's letters from his associates, and regarding the settlement of his estate.
Also included are twenty-nine pocket diaries, 1889-1890, 1892-1898, 1900-1919, recording daily activities, people and places visited, observations, and comments; a diary kept by Freer's caretaker, Joseph Stephens Warring, recording daily activities at Freer's Detroit home, 1907-1910. Inventories, n.d. and 1901-1921, of American, European, and Asian art in Freer's collection, often including provenance information; vouchers, 1884-1919, documenting his purchases; five volumes of scrapbooks of clippings on James McNeill Whistler, 1888-1931, labeled "Various," "Peacock Room," "Death, etc.," "Paris, etc.," and "Boston...London" ; three volumes of newsclippings, 1900-1930, concerning Freer and the opening of the Freer Gallery of Art.
Correspondence regarding Freer's gift and bequest to the Smithsonian Institution, 1902-1916; and photographs, ca. 1880-1930, of Freer, including portraits by Alvin Langdon Coburn and Edward Steichen, Freer with others, Freer in Cairo, China and Japan, Freer's death mask, and his memorial service, Kyoto, 1930; photographs of artists and others, including Thomas Dewing, Ernest Fenollosa, Katharine Rhoades taken by Alfred Stieglitz, Rosalind B. Philip, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Abbott H. Thayer, Dwight Tryon, and Whistler; and photographs relating to Whistler, including art works depicting him, grave and memorial monuments, works of art, the Peacock Room, and Whistler's memorial exhibition at the Copley Society.

Charles Lang Freer was an American industrialist who founded the Freer Gallery of Art. He was a well-known collector of Asian art, and strongly supported the synthesis of Eastern art and Western art. One of his most famous acquisitions was James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room.

Biographical / Historical:
Beatrice S. Levy (1892-1974) was an etcher in Chicago, Ill. and La Jolla, Calif. Levy studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under Ralph Clarkson and with Charles W. Hawthorne in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She had a studio in Chicago's 57th Street Art Colony. Her work was exhibited at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition (1915), the Century of Progress in Chicago (1933-1934), and the New York's World's Fair (1939). Levy was President of the Chicago Society of Artists, Supervisor of the Works Progress Administration Art Project Gallery, and Supervisor of the Easel Painting Division in 1936 for the Federal Art Project. In 1950 she moved to California, where she taught at the La Jolla Museum School of Arts and Crafts (1961-1962) and continued to exhibit her work.
Provenance:
The Beatrice S. Levy papers were donated in 2018 and 2023 by Heather Peck, granddaughter of Dorothy Stratton, a friend of Beatrice Levy. Material microfilmed on reel 4190 (frames 773-1023) was originally part of a larger collection of material given to the University of Louisville (Kentucky) by Samuel Steinfeld, a cousin of Beatrice Levy. The University of Louisville transferred this group of papers to the Art Institute of Chicago, who in turn donated them to the Archives of American Art in 1986. Samuel Steinfeld donated additional material on reel 4190 (frames 1024-1311) in 1986.

Primarily correspondence and a scrapbook kept by several of the Society's secretaries including F. L. Thompson and James Swann. Correspondence mostly with members concerning activities, sales, and exhibitions. Several letters inquire about the status of the Society and whether it will continue. The scrapbook, 1937-1972 (bulk 1937-1948), contains exhibition catalogs and announcements, letters, annual bulletins, membership lists, handwritten minutes of Board of Directors' meetings which detail expenses, suggestions for exhibition venues, membership and activities. Added to the scrapbook is the 1972 certificate of dissolution of the Society. A few miscellaneous financial records, printed materials, and price lists complete the collection.
Among the correspondents are: Cornelius Botke, Gustav Dalstrom, Gene Kloss, Philip Kappel, Roi Partridge, Leon R. Pescheret, and Maltby Sykes, as well as local Chicago artists.

The papers of etcher Morris Henry Hobbs measure 4.7 linear feet and date from circa 1901-2014. His career as an artist in Chicago and New Orleans is documented through biographical material, correspondence, writings, professional files, printed material, photographs, artwork, and four sketchbooks.
Biographical material includes chronologies, biographical statements, and documentation on his home and studio. Correspondence includes letters to friends and family regarding art, travel, and botany. Of note are letters from the etchers John Taylor Arms and Bertha Jaques and botanist Lyman Smith. Writings consist of Hobbs' diary kept during World War I while serving in the U.S. Army, journal pages documenting his move to New Orleans, and garden notebooks. Professional files include documents relating to Hobbs' memberships and activities in the Bromeliad Society, Chicago Society of Etchers, Louisiana Society of Etchers, New Orleans Art League, and other organizations. Also included are exhibition records, price lists, and sales records.
Printed material includes clippings and exhibition announcements documenting his career as well as published versions of his etchings. Photographs and slides are of Hobbs, family and friends, trips abroad, and his properties in New Orleans and Mandeville, Louisiana. Artwork includes architectural renderings, sketches of Chicago, France, and New Orleans, and an annotated scrapbook containing original etchings. Four sketchbooks include figure drawings and landscapes in pencil and ink.

Biographical / Historical:
Morris Henry Hobbs (1892-1967) was an etcher in Chicago and New Orleans. Hobbs was born in Rockford, Illinois, and raised in Chicago. As a teenager he took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the age of 17 was hired as a draftsman at an architectural firm. From 1918-1919, he served in France with the Allied Expeditionary Force. While there he contracted influenza which resulted in the loss of his hearing. After the war he lived in Toledo, Ohio, with his wife and two daughters and worked at an architectural firm. He also learned printmaking techniques from etcher J. Ernest Dean and began exhibiting his work. In 1927, he returned to Chicago with his family and in 1930 became director of the Chicago Society of Etchers. During his career he was active in many arts and printmaking organizations.
In 1938, Hobbs traveled to New Orleans for an extended visit, opened a studio space, and began a ten-year project of etching French Quarter scenes. A year later he moved to New Orleans permanently and became the first president of the Louisiana Society of Etchers. In 1942, he married Alice "Judy" Seddon. In 1948, he was hired as a designer for the architectural firm Favrot, Reed, Mathes and Bergman, and was employed there until his death. Also at this time, he and his wife establish a country home in Mandeville, Louisiana, where he built a greenhouse and cultivated tropical bromeliads. They kept an apartment in the French Quarter as a weekday residence.
In 1960, Hobbs began a series of watercolors depicting bromeliads and in the subsequent years traveled to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Trinidad to collect specimens for a potential book project. He died in 1967 at the age of 75 and that year the Reinike Gallery held a retrospective of his work. His wife Alice Seddon Hobbs died in 1993 at the age of 95.

The Charles W. Dahlgreen papers measure 1.1 linear feet and date from 1886-1957. Included is biographical material, writings, correspondence, works of art, photographs, financial material, exhibition material and printed material.
Biographical material includes two biographical accountsand a manuscript for Dahlgreen's autobiography and certifcates from the Art Institute of Chicago and a Canadian mining certificate. Writings include 4 notebooks about on his works, recipes for paint and printmaking materials, and notes on his family history. Correspondence relates to Dahlgreen's art-related activities and his involvement with various art organizations. Artwork includes 9 sketchbooks, 1886-1908, and 45 drawings, 1906-1909. Photographs are of Dahlgreen in his studio, with his fiancee, his mobile studio, and his works of art. Also included are photographs of lodge banners, Leon Makielski posed with his portrait of Dahlgreen, Nicoli Fechin, and images of the Brown County, the Indiana Colony, the Society of Etchers members Lucie Hartrath and Bertha Jaques, and others. Financial material consists of an account book, 1912-1920, containing a price and sales list, an dues ledger, 1918-1923, a receipt book for works of art, 1933-1940, an income and expenses ledger, 1942-1947, an undated price list for works of art, miscellaneous receipts and address files and lists works of art. Exhibition material consists of 30 exhibition prospectuses. Printed material includes clippings and bulletins.

A family photograph album, compiled by Schneider's sister, Emma; a scrapbook containing reproductions of drawings by James Swann; photocopies of articles and clippings about Schneider; an etching by Schneider; reproductions of his etchings; and printed material. Also contains materials relating to the World's Columbian Exposition, including a pamphlet, "Official Guide to the Grounds and Buildings of the World's Columbian Exposition," and a broadside, "To the Stockholders of the World's Columbian Exposition".

This series consists of letters exchanged between Lazzari, family members, and colleagues. Over one hundred letters from the Federal Works Agency and the Treasury Department Section of Painting and Sculpture concern post office murals for towns in Florida, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Five letters from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration contain 23 photographs of astronauts Eugene A. Cernan, Ronald E. Evans, and Harrison H. Schmitt preparing for an Apollo 17 mission to the moon. Lazzari also received at least one letter each from Jacqueline Kennedy, Duncan Phillips, Eleanor Roosevelt, industrialist John Rust, and socialist Norman Thomas.

Two brief biographies by Frances Foy for "Leading American Women"; Illinois Academy of Fine Arts membership cards for Foy and Dalstrom; correspondence, with the Art Institute of Chicago and other museums, local galleries, dealers, and arts organizations such as the Renaissance Society, American Federation of Arts, and Chicago Society of Etchers; a letter of 3/26/34 from fellow artist Rifka Angel regarding selection of artists for Public Works of Art Projects; New Deal art project materials, including correspondence about a mural commemorating Marian Anderson's 1939 concert at Lincoln Memorial and with federal agencies,concerning commissions, contracts, vouchers, drawings and blueprints for projects, announcements, speeches, and articles on the government art programs.
Exhibition records include receipts, loan agreements, checklists, and shipping forms. Financial records include invoices, pricelists, purchase orders, receipts, remittances, and vouchers from private customers. Printed materials include news clippings, brochures, advertisements from art supply companies; articles on exhibitions, newsletters from arts organizations, announcements and catalogs of exhibitions, and a copy of Dali's "Declaration of the Independence of the Imagination and the Rights of Man to His Own Madness" 1939.

Biographical / Historical:
Muralists and painters; Chicago, Ill. Married in 1923. Worked on the Public Works of Art Project and Federal Art Project. Painted several post office murals. Belonged to local arts organizations such as the Renaissance Society and the No-Jury Society of Artists. Foy, who used her maiden name professionally, gained recognition locally for her paintings of flowers.
