Summary:
The papers of Matthew Shepard (1976-1998) a gay man who was a victim of a hate crime in Laramie, Wyoming October 1998 resulting in his death. His death gained national and international attention leading to the formation of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and eventual passage of federal hate crime legislation (The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act), signed into law in October 2009.
Content Description:
Papers relating to the life of Matthew Shepard, his beating, death, and its aftermath, leading to the passage of anti-hate crime legislation named for him and James Byrd, Jr. The papers include items from Shepard's early life, his school life, elementary through college, and personal material. The collection includes material from his recycling campaign. It also includes items from theater productions in which he participated. There is correspondence both written and received as well as notebooks and his passports. Travel and general ephemera are also included.

The papers related to the aftermath of his beating and death include funeral memorabilia, programs, flower cards, and photographs of floral arrangements. The bulk of the material consists of condolence cards and letters, expressions of sympathy and condolence, and material from memorial events thoughout the United States. These include not only written correspondence, but graphic and artistic tributes (drawings, poetry, screenplays, and musical compositions.)

There are screenplays, correspondence, and photographs relating to the television motion pictures, Anatomy of a Hate Crime (2001) and The Matthew Shepard Story (2002) starring Stockard Channing, Sam Waterston, and Shane Meier.

The papers have been utilized prior to their donation to the Archives, National Museum of American History by filmmaker Michele Josue and Zeina Barkawi for the award winning documentary, Matt Shepard Is A Friend of Mine (2015). The material was also researched by representatives of Ford's Theater, Washington, DC when Ford's mounted a production of Moises Kaufman's The Laramie Project in 2013.

Biographical / Historical:
The life and death of Matthew Shepard have been documented in numerous biographies, motion pictures, and newsprint.

Matthew Wayne Shepard was born on December 1, 1976 in Casper, Wyoming to Judy Peck and Dennis Wayne Shepard. Shepard's early life was spent in Casper, where he attended elementary school, junior high, and high school till the tenth grade. While living in Casper, he participated in local productions at theater companies based in Casper. One of his school projects involved bringing awareness to recycling. He was so successful that he was appointed as the young adult representative to the governor's initiaive on state-wide recycling. In his junior year of high school, Shepard left Casper to attend The American School in Switzerland (TASIS). At that time his mother Judy and younger brother Logan joined Dennis Shepard in Saudi Arabia where Dennis was employed by SAUDI ARAMCO.

While attending TASIS on a school trip to Morocco Shepard was raped by one or more unknown assailants. Although the crime was reported, the perpetrators were never apprehended. This emotional and physical trauma stayed with Shepard the remainder of his life. After graduation from TASIS, Shepard briefly attended Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. After leaving Catawba he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, and then returned to Casper, where he enrolled in Casper College, the local community college. He briefly moved to Denver, Colorado, before deciding to enter the Universty of Wyoming in Laramie, his parents' alma mater. He was admitted for the 1998-1999 school year to the University of Wyoming.

It was while living in Laramie on the evening of October 6, 1998 that Shepard crossed paths with Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at the Fireside Lounge. McKinney and Henderson later drove him to a location outside Laramie, where they tied Shepard to a split-rail fence, robbed, and beat him senseless with the butt of a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver. After beating him they stole his shoes and left him in the near-freezing temperatures.

Shepard was discovered 18 hours later by Aaron Kreifels. He was first transported to Ivinson Hospital in Laramie, and upon the discovery of the severity of his injuries he was transferred to the Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. His parents immediately flew from Saudi Arabia and were with him when he died in the early morning hours of October 12, 1998.

McKinney and Henderson were arrested and charged. They maintained what is known as a "gay panic defense" claiming Shepard had made sexual overtures to one or both of them. This was ultimately not allowed. Henderson pleaded guilty to the charges of felony murder and kidnapping. McKinney went to trial also facing charges of felony murder and kidnapping. When found guilty, McKinney faced the possibility of the death penalty, but upon the Shepard family's request he received two consecutive life sentences, as had Henderson.

The death of Matthew on October 12, 1998 resulted in an unprecedented national and international outpouring of sympathy and reflection from the public at large. Cards, letters, and donations to what became the Matthew Shepard Foundation were received from not only the United States but the world. The response was overwhelming, many writing, "to express their concern and sorrow about what had happened to Matt and to us as his parents," in the words of Dennis Shepard. Shepard's Celebration of Life was held at the family's home church, St. Mark's Episcopal, in Casper, Wyoming. Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church picketed the funeral.

Over a ten-year period, Judy Shepard and the Matthew Shepard Foundation fought for national hate crime legislation. It was not until 2009 that Congress passed The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also known as the Matthew Shepard Act, on October 22. President Barack Obama signed the act into law on October 28. The Foundation continues to this day bringing good from evil, empowering individuals, ". . . to embrace human dignity and diversity through outreach, advocacy and resource programs," and, ". . . to replace hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance."

Shepard's ashes were inurned at the Washington National Cathedral in October 2018.

Summary:
A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. The Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Tobacco Trade and Industry forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Subseries 1.1: Subject Categories. The Subject Categories subseries is divided into 470 subject categories based on those created by Mr. Warshaw. These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. Scope and Contents:
This subject category, "Tobacco Trade and Industry," consists of materials related to the tobacco trade and industry. This subject category provides an extensive record of the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century tobacco industry with materials for consumers, traders, and distributors. It forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Collection Division I: Business Ephemera and Division II: Oversize Materials.

Series 1, Tobacco and Tobacco Related Product Ephemera, 1781-1965, undated, is the largest portion of the tobacco related materials. This series is arranged alphabetically by manufacturer and distributor name. The materials consist of advertising cards, scraps, trade catalogs, price lists, pamphlets, labels, correspondence on letterhead stationery, bills, receipts, illustrations from periodicals, printed advertisements, periodicals, newspaper clippings, broadsides, shipping documents, handbills, premiums, promotional items, announcements, and business cards. The majority of materials are from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth- century and were created primarily for consumers, traders and distributors. Most of the materials are from the East Coast and there is a large amount of undated material. Ethnic imagery and images of women and children are prominently featured in this series. The location of the company is given when known.

Series 2, Patents and Trademarks, 1875-1904, is arranged alphabetically by patent and trademark applicants. With illustrations and descriptions, many patent and trademark documents come from East Coast patent offices during the 1870s. While this series is limited in scope, it provides numerous examples of the patenting of tobacco brand names and other related products. Additionally, it contains many images of minorities, women, and a variety of ethnic imagery.

Series 3, Bills of Lading, 1833-1925, is arranged alphabetically by location with foreign locations comprising one folder. The materials date from the late nineteenth century, and the majority is from the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This series not only tells a great deal about shipping and importing, but it also provides detailed information about the parties, countries, and people involved in the process of shipping tobacco around the world. Although the collection is somewhat varied, the majority of the bills of lading have date stamps, detailed port information, and information about the imported tobacco itself. Other locations include Maryland, New York, Cuba, and foreign locales.

Series 4, Lithographs, undated, is a series of labels for packages and products arranged alphabetically. It is a great resource for the study of early American advertising. Although most of the product labels are undated, they are probably of the late nineteenth to early twentieth- century. The majority of companies were based in New York, New York.

Series 5, Ephemera and Photographs, 1750-1957, undated, is arranged and organized by type of material. This series is comprised of general images, cigar store Indian images, auction lists, packing for tobacco products, and advertising cards, and contains a wealth of documentation of the American tobacco market. One of the best resources of this series is its collection of cigar bands. There are two photographs within this series, one depicting the exterior of a tobacco shop and another photograph of ladies working with shade grown tobacco, most likely in Connecticut. This series contains a copy of the Burr McIntosh photograph, "Leaves of Desire".

Series 6, Publications, 1742-1962, undated, consist of articles, books, pamphlets, magazines, and periodicals. One of the most useful portions of this series is the anti-tobacco related publications. The series contains tobacco-related articles. In addition to a few articles about tobacco companies, there are publications that contemplate the issues behind smoking. This series also contains tobacco related clippings from magazines and periodicals. Directories are also included in this series. The sheer variety of the material is vast, including essays from The Farm Quarterly and United States government documents. Tobacco is the only unifying factor. Researchers may be interested in La Santa Yerba, a late nineteenth-century book containing verses and other reflections on the tobacco plant itself.

This collection consists of eight scrapbooks and five posters documenting the burlesque career of Irene Jewell (stage name Ricki Covette), who at 6'8" was billed as "The World's Tallest Exotic Dancer." Biographical / Historical:
Born in 1925 in rural Alberta, Canada, Irene Jewell aspired to become a singer and dancer. Moving to the United States in the 1950s, Jewell began a thirty-year career in show business, including theater, small parts in television and film, but especially burlesque, under her stage name "Ricki Covette." Billed as "The World's Tallest Exotic Dancer" at 6'8" and the "Glamazon," Covette's career spanned the peak of burlesque's popularity; her career highlights included headlining at clubs, including an 82-week stint at the ShoBar in New Orleans, Louisiana, and a solo act world tour in Japan, the United Kingdom, and the Americans. Besides her burlesque career, Covette also had parts in theater, including playing the role of Gymnasia in the 1963-1964 tour of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and appearing in the 1966 film The Swinger. After she left show business, she started a successful second career as a real estate broker in the Los Angeles area and travelled with her husband, cinematographer Stuart Jewell, shooting footage of nature and culture. In 2010 she appeared in Leslie Zemeckis's documentary, Behind the Burly! Covette died in February 2016.

Namely the carte-de-viste and cabinet prints, were probably collected by Warshaw for subject content or as examples of advertising ephemera rather than as photographic portraits. Researchers using the collection may be more interested in these images as documentation of clothing, hair styles, family life, leisure activities, women, or a particular studio. The photographs are divided into three groups: (1) those that have been re-housed as a separate series, namely the stereographs, (2) those that remain housed in their original locations within the main collection subject categories; and (3) photographs that have been transferred to the Photographic History Collection.

A number of the photographs were re-housed as a separate series because of preservation concerns. Originally stereographs were interfiled with the other materials in the business ephemera vertical files. It was felt, however, that this arrangement could be damaging to the stereographs. In 1991 they were re-housed to ensure their preservation and were reorganized to better facilitate their use as research tools. The stereographs have been arranged by subject. Whenever possible the same subject categories as the business ephemera vertical files have been maintained. Some new subject categories have been created that were more conducive to typical stereograph subject matter. The stereographs are organized first by topical divisions and then by geographical location.

A number of photographs remain in the collection in the business ephemera vertical files. Most often these photographs were collected by Warshaw as documentation of the particular subject matter that they are housed with. These photographs tend to be grouped together and labeled as photographs at the end of the company names in the container list. If there are one or two photographs and a number of lithographs and engravings, these materials are often grouped together and labeled as general images.
Separated Materials note:
A number of the Warshaw photographs have been transferred to the Photographic History Collection (now Division of Work and Industry). A listing of these photographs is available in the Archives Center.

Over two thousand stereographs (or stereoscopic photographs) are among the estimated two million documents and items of business ephemera in the Warshaw Collection. It is likely that Isadore Warshaw collected the stereographs both as examples of business advertising and as pictorial representations of commercial products, historical themes, and other subjects. Many of these stereographs contain advertisements for non-photographic businesses, as well as imprints of photographers' names and studio locations. There is also a substantial minority of items which bear no identification at all.

One group of images deserves particular note: In the section headed "New York-Albany" are approximately 125 stereographs from the Julius Wendt and Wendt Bros. studios located in Albany at the turn of the twentieth century. The subjects include street scenes, Washington Park, the state capitol building, and citizens of the area. Many of the stereographs of people in this group have biographical newspaper clippings affixed to the versos. A large number of stereographs from one studio is significant, and these images provide a fascinating document of Albany and its citizens from 1900 to 1905. Another stereograph of special interest is an advertisement for the stereoscopic photographer T. F. M. White of New Bedford, Mass., which was located in the "photography" category. This view contains text and an image, both of which yield a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope. While these examples stand out as highlights of the collection, there are other excellent examples of the form from the 1860s through the early 1900s. Much subject matter is fairly typical of stereographs, including views of Western scenery, railroads, resorts, bridges, and street scenes. The quality of the compositions and the condition of the cards varies widely. Currently there are eleven boxes of images and over one hundred categories, as described in the Container List. More stereographs may be added if they are found elsewhere in the Warshaw Collection, and this inventory will be updated accordingly.

The stereographs are the work of many photographers and publishers from the 1860s to the 1920s; they are primarily American views of American scenes, although there is also a section of foreign views. As mentioned above, they are filed in the stereograph boxes according to their original business ephemera locations, whether in the topical or geographical series. Some categories contain only a single item, others contain many.

The container list of stereographs is controlled at the sub-series level, then by category title; but when there are many items in a category, the more notable images and better-known makers are identified. Most early images are silver albumen and later views are silver gelatin unless otherwise noted; "lithoprints" are photomechanical. The "See also" references indicate related images in other categories.
Biographical/Historical note:
A stereograph consists of two nearly identical images, generally photographs, exposed as a rule simultaneously and from a distance separation of approximately two-and-one-half inches, mounted on a card and viewed, with or without the aid of a binocular viewer, to produce the simulation of three dimensions. The subject of the stereograph and its waves of popularity in the United States and elsewhere is treated in a number of books, but authoritatively and exhaustively in William Culp Darrah's monumental book, The World of the Stereograph.(1) Stereographs were manufactured and distributed commercially in large quantities by publishers for mass markets as objects of both entertainment and education, but they were also produced in smaller quantities for specialized markets. The stereograph was the dominant form of photography in the nineteenth century. Its immense popularity lasted approximately until the cinema and halftone-illustrated print media sent it into eclipse after World War I..(2)

Reorganization Notes:
Originally, these stereographs were interfiled with other materials in the Warshaw Collection. It was felt that this arrangement could be damaging to the stereographs and appeared in many instances to be haphazard. Therefore, in 1991 they were rehoused to ensure their preservation, and reorganized to better facilitate their use as research tools. Whenever possible, categories from the primary Warshaw materials have been retained; however, new categories which matched typical or traditional stereograph subject arrangement were added. This method created some overlap among categories, so it is suggested that a researcher follow "see also" terms within the section descriptions. The stereographs are now organized by topical and geographical categories. Selected photographers have been indexed as well.

It may seem strange that portions of a collection should be removed from their original context, consolidated, and separated from the rest of the collection, but this was done to make the Warshaw stereographs more accessible to photographic historians and others interested primarily in documentary photographic evidence, rather than advertising imagery, trade literature, and text materials. Also, storage of the stereographs in standard document boxes posed a hazard to the material because of their size and form, especially prints on curved or "warped" mounts, which might be crushed or mishandled if filed with other items in disparate formats and sizes. Jennifer Songster-Burnett located, organized, and catalogued the majority of these stereographs as an internship project in spring 1991. The prior association of these images with Warshaw Collection topical categories was retained to ensure their continued availability to users of the Business Ephemera Vertical Files. Often cross- reference copies have been placed in the Business Ephemera boxes to indicate specific images which were refiled, and many cards are arranged according to the original category titles. A researcher with citations to stereographs in their original locations can relocate them easily in the parallel arrangement of the stereographs.

The consolidation of stereographs from all categories should enhance their utility for scholars seeking specifically photographic documentation of objects, places, and events. In the original vertical files, the stereographs' multiple topical and thematic associations were often obscured. A stereograph from the "Insurance" category, for example, depicts an architecturally distinguished insurance company building in Milwaukee, but the architectural historian might not search that category for views of buildings: among the stereographs, even the accidental or serendipitous finding of this image will be faster and easier. The project also facilitated more detailed cataloguing of these images, with considerable cross- referencing and subject descriptors in the automated database (SIRIS): for example, the insurance building, the only item in the "Insurance" category of the stereographs subdivision, has been cross-referenced under architectural descriptors, and can be accessed in this manner as well.

Summary:
Collection of archival materials removed from trunks of personal belongings abandoned at death by Filipino agricultural workers in Stockton, California.
Scope and Contents:
The contents of this collection include albums with photographs from the Philippines and the United States, receipts, pay stubs, books, letters, and other correspondence from the Philippines, framed photographs, and other ephemera. Most of the correspondence in the collection is written in Visayan, the language spoken within the southernmost islands of Luzon in the Philippines. The contents of the letters are in the process of being translated. Most of the photographs of individuals in the collection are not identified. The collection is divided into 23 series. 22 of which are individual Filipino migrants, who were members of the fraternal organization. The last series consists of the Filipino fraternal organization "Legionarios del Trabajo". The collection is important for those researchers interested in the history of early Filipino-American agricultural workers.

Biographical / Historical:
The collection documents the lives of Filipino migrants in Stockton, California dating from 1920s-1970s. The collection was retrieved from the basement of the Daguhoy Lodge, a meeting place for the Filipino fraternal organization "Legionarios del Trabajo". The lodge doubled as a living space for Filipino agricultural laborers during the early twentieth century. The collection holds the belongings of Filipino migrant farm laborers who did not have a family to obtain their belongings after their deaths.

The series primarily consists of correspondences, materials relating to the Legionarios del Trabajo, two wallets and their contents, a blank diary, and other ephemera. Correspondences are primarily written in Visayan by Ramon BatolBatol and Johnny Gihapon in Cebu, Philippines, and sent to Julian Rogas in Oakland, California. The contents of the letters are currently unknown and in the process of translation into English. The materials relating to the Legionarios del Trabajo document Julian's membership in the fraternal organization. The materials do not identify any information regarding Julian's personal details. Instead, they document Julian residing in Oakland, California during the 1930s. The series serves as a primary source for understanding the social, political, and cultural landscape as well as how people attempted to stay connected to people in another country during the 1930s. Materials are arranged in chronological order.
Biographical / Historical:
Julian Rogas was born in 1889 or 1887 in the Philippines.* The details of Julian's journey to the United States are uncertain. The only historical record mentioning Julian's travel to the United States is through A 1930 United States Federal Census which lists his immigration year as 1915. At the time, he resided in Oak Street Oakland, California, where he worked as a janitor in a building, earning little wages. With little money, he could only afford to lodge and rent, sharing the living space with a family and 4 other single lodgers. Little information is known about Julian's marital status. The 1930 Federal Census mentioned Julian to be a single man. However, according to a 1950 United States Federal Census, Julian's marital status was listed as separated which means that Julian was married. So far, there are no historical records indicating the name of the individual Julian married or the date when and where they got married. By 1950, Julian resided in Oakland, California, living with 7 other individuals. At the time, his occupation was a dinner cook, who was seeking employment. So far, no historical record indicating Julian Rogas' death.

The materials document the life of Anastacio while residing in Stockton, California in the 1930s. Materials relating to the Legionarios del Trabajo document his membership in the fraternal organization. Materials relating to the Franklin Bond Corporation document Anastacio's loan agreement, payment information, and account information such as residential addresses in California and in the Philippines along with his cosigner, Alfonso Omandam. Anastacio's relationship with Alfonso is unknown. The materials in this series do not identify any information regarding Anastacio's personal details. The series serves as a primary source for understanding the role of fraternal organizations in local communities? Materials are arranged in chronological order.
Biographical / Historical:
Anastacio Omandam was born on April 19, 1890, in Plaridel, Occidental Province in Nothern Mindanao, Philippines.* This historical record provides no details of the early life of Anastacio, except that his highest completed education level is the 5th grade. It is unclear when Anastacio left the Philippines. According to a Honolulu Arriving Passenger and Crew List, on Jan 5th, 1916, aboard the SS Nippon Maru, Anastacio arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii along with 15 Filipino and 19 Japanese immigrants. There is a possibility that Anastacio emigrated to Hawaii to be employed by the Hawaiian Sugar Plantation Association. So far, there is no record mentioning Anastacio leaving Hawaii and traveling to California. However, according to the 1920 United States Federal Census, by 1920, Anastacio resided in San Joaquin, California. During this time, Anastacio worked as a laborer in General Farms, where he probably worked up and down the West Coast like other Filipino agricultural workers of the time. While earning a small wage, Anastacio shared his living space with 15 other Filipino immigrant workers. By 1940, Anastacio would continue to live in San Joaquin working as a field worker for the Sequera Bros. Union Isle. According to his World War II Draft Registration card, Anastacio listed the Daguhoy Lodge at 203 East Hazelton Ave to be his place of residence which can be assumed that Anastacio was a member of the Daguhoy Lodge No. 528 Legionarios del Trabajo. Little is known regarding the family of Anastacio, except that he had two siblings named Alfonso and Marcosa. According to a Philippines Select Marriage record, Anastacio had a wife named Luisa Suminguit. Together, they had a daughter named Magdalena Omandan. The record does not indicate when Luisa and Anastacio had gotten married. The duration of the couples' marriage is also unclear. Anastacio died on October 20, 1966, in Stockton. The series primarily consist of correspondence, black and white photographs and negatives of Mansueto and other unidentified individuals, documents from the Mare Island Navy Yard, materials relating to Legionarios del Trabajo, and other ephemera. The materials document the life of Epimaco residing in Stockton, California working as a common laborer. Records from the Mare Island Navy Yard documents Epimaco's personal detail such as his date of birth, residential address, and occupation. The letters are primarily written in Visayan by family members and friends in Cebu, Philippines. The contents of the letters are currently unknown and in the process translation into English. Materials relating to the Legionarios del Trabajo emphasizes his dedication to the membership in the fraternity. The photographs document cultural attire and geographical locations. The series serves as a primary source for understanding Filipino fashion trends and cultural attire, the social, political, and cultural landscape. Materials are arranged in chronological order.
Biographical / Historical:
Eusebio Maglinte was born in the 1890s in Dimiao, Bohol, Philippine.* According to census records, he attended school until the fourth grade. Maglinte left his homeland aboard the S.S. Venezuela, which departed Manila on August 2, 1920, and arrived thirty day later in Honolulu, Hawaii. He made his journey with fifty-two other Filipino men, mostly from Bohol, Cebu, and Negros Oriental. These men were brought for employment by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association. This employment last for three years, before Eusebio left Hawaii aboard the S. S. President Piece, bound for San Francisco in November 1923.

Once arriving in Northern California, Eusebio undoubtedly headed for work in the fields of the Central Valley. The 1930 census shows him as a farm laborer, living with 26 other Filipino men on Georgiana Slough Road near the town of Isleton and Walnut Grove, southwest of Sacramento. Within five years, he had moved to San Joaquin Count and was living on the Wright Tract. During the 1940 census, he is listed is the same place as other 16 Filipino men, who had all worked seventeen hours the week before. The census also lists that in the previous year, Eusebio had worked twenty-six weeks and made $350.00. By 1947, Eusebio ad moved into Stockton and was listed in the City Directory at 203 E. Hazelton, still working as a laborer. Eusebio died on August 13, 1952 in Santa Clara County, California.

*Almost every record shows a different date of birth for Eusebio Maglinte. On the passenger list of his first journey to Honolulu, it is recorded as January 15, 1898. On the passenger list of his journey to San Francisco, it is listed as May 31, 1892. On his California death record, it is given as April 15, 1891.

The series primarily consists of correspondence, paystubs from an unidentified company, documents from the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and other ephemera. The materials document the life of Olaco while residing in Stockton, California from the 1920s to the 1950s. Several paystubs from an unidentified company document his occupation as a laborer and his earnings harvesting asparagus. The contents of the letters are written in English, documenting the financial struggle caused by a fisherman's strike and ideas relating to the Independence of the Philippines. The series serves as a primary source for understanding the complex interplay between economic struggles, social movements, and the quest for national independence during the 1920s and 1950s. Biographical / Historical:
Epimaco Fariola Mansueto was born on July 17, 1902, in the Philippines. Little is known about his early life other than the fact that he obtained a grammar school education. Records documenting Mansueto leaving the Philippines. According to his World War II Army enlistment record, on October 16, 1942, Epimaco was a United States citizen and resided in San Joaquin, California, more specifically at the Daguhoy Lodge at 203 East Hazelton Avenue, where he was a member of the Legionarios del Trabajo. At this time, Epimaco was 5 feet 6 inches and weighed 128 pounds, using his youthful strength to work as a general farm hand in the agricultural fields of Northern California. Although Epimaco's family background is uncertain, records show he married later in life. Historical records such as the 1948 City Directory mention Epimaco having a spouse named Katie Mansueto. Together, they lived in 3 Cottage Row in San Francisco, California. Epimaco Fariola Mansueto died on January 8, 1988, in San Francisco, California at the age of eighty-six.

Sixto Olaco

Biographical / Historical:
Sixto Olaco was born on April 19, 1892, in Candijay, Bohol, Philippines. At the age of twenty-four, Sixto set sail to Honolulu, Hawaii, aboard the S.S. Shinyo Maru. He was part of a large group of Filipino men from different parts of the Philippines who boarded the ship to work for the Hawaiian Sugar Plantation Association. According to the Hawaii arriving passenger and crew list, the ship arrived on July 12, 1917. There is a possibility that Sixto remained in Honolulu for a year. His World War I registration card documents his residence from 1917 to 1918. Olaco's arrival in California is documented in the United States Index to Alien Case Files, which lists February 1, 1921, to be his arrival date in San Francisco. In addition, according to the 1930 Federal Census, Sixto Olaco was listed as a single-roomer in a house at N Street in Sacramento, California. The census mentioned that he worked as a laborer who worked odd jobs, which were not uncommon for Filipino immigrants at the time. Sixto would continue living in Sacramento and worked as a laborer for a couple more years, as recorded in 1945 city directories. Olaco died on October 7, 1961, at the age of sixty-nine in Luis Obispo County in California at Arroyo Grande Cemetery.
