Summary:
Materials relating to Charlie Dunn, fourth-generation bookmaker.
Scope and Contents note:
Newspaper and magazine articles, radio broadcast transcripts, and advertisements relating to Dunn's career. In addition there is a documentary of Dunn's craft on video tape, photographs, miscellaneous business stationery, and a research project titled "Charlie and Cecile Dunn: A Study in Retirement" (1978) by Linda Gann.
Biographical/Historical note:
Charlie Dunn is a fourth-generation bootmaker, from a family of Irish cobblers who moved to the U.S. in the early 1800s. At eight he began an apprenticeship for a one-legged bootmaker in Paris, Texas, beginning a career that has lasted (with a brief retirement) ever since. Practicing now in Austin, Texas, he is regarded as one of the best bootmakers in the world.

Collection is now part of AC1086, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Records.
Scope and Contents note:
Includes lists of rail accidents, production and distribution of locomotives, and engine repair costs; reports on locomotive power, cost and performance, and purchases of locomotives and cars; and correspondence relating to these and other matters, all 1850-1880. Most correspondence is to Garrett from railroad supervisory staff. Includes a history of the operation of the railroad during the Civil War and additional correspondence concerning Ohio River bridges, trestles, and tunnels.

Biographical/Historical note:
Garrett, president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, 1858-1884, was born in Baltimore, Maryland July 31, 1820. After working for his father's financially successful commission business, during which time he invested heavily in the B. & O. Railroad, he was elected a director in 1855 and president in 1858. Under his leadership the railroad made history during the Civil War by carrying out the first military rail transport. During peacetime the railroad prospered with Garrett as president. He died September 26, 1884.

Papers relating to blacksmith and hardware store owner Jacob Aloysius Dorf of Missouri.
Scope and Contents:
Newspaper clippings and correspondence relating to Dorf's activities, particularly in the hardware business. Biographical information and obituaries are included as well as samples of his unusual advertising.
Biographical/Historical note:
Jacob A. Dorf was born in Cedar Hill, Missouri. His name was originally Blittersdorf. To Anaconda, Missouri in 1901, where he owned and operated a blacksmith shop. In 1911 he purchased a hardware store in Cuba, Missouri, which he operated for more than 49 years. Throughout his long business career he was an innovative advertiser in the local press and elsewhere, sponsoring a radio program in 1924 which stimulated letters from thirty states and Canada. Dorf was active in community affairs, particularly during the depressed 1930s. In 1933 he led an effort which saved the local bank from failing. He branched into other business lines, including real estate, and once financed the purchase of a better breed of cattle for local farmers.
