Manuscript and printed textual material, photographic prints and negatives, slides, audio tapes, film, original and reproduction artwork, maps, scrapbooks, and historical and natural artifacts related to the history of African exploration and natural history, dating primarily from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Includes correspondence, drafts of publications, diaries, account books, ephemera, posters, newsclippings, biographies, memoirs, portraits, and the former personal property of selected explorers, big game hunters, missionaries, pioneers, and naturalists in Africa. The Train Collection is particularly strong in archival materials on the following topics: the search for the source of the Nile and the progress of other exploring expeditions in Africa; the collecting of specimens of African animals, plants, and ethnological materials for zoos and museums (including a significant body of correspondence and photographs from the Smithsonian African Expedition in 1909-1910, led by President Theodore Roosevelt); and the growth of the African wildlife conservation movement. Besides Roosevelt, the major persons represented in the Collection include the journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley and members of his Emin Pasha Relief Expedition (Thomas Heazle Parke, Robert H. Nelson, James S. Jameson, John Rose Troup, William Bonny, William G. Stairs, Edmund Barttelot, and Arthur J. M. Jephson); the medical missionary Dr. David Livingstone and his father-in-law Robert Moffat; taxidermist Carl Akeley; zoologist Edmund Heller; hunter Frederick Courtenay Selous; artist and adventure writer A. The first 10 pages are excellent, well phrased and promising a book of quite exceptional merit. Thereafter, however, I grew more and more disappointed as the book proceeded, for although some of the situations are very well thought out and the author's knowledge of the terrain is never in doubt, the improbability of the whole set-up renders the story incredible and I fear not attractive to the modern reader."

Scope and Contents note:
This novel is based on Dugmore's experiences in Canada and partially in the First World War. It is accompanied by a brief criticism by R.H. Ambrose who writes: "This is a story which, shorn of all reference to the 1914/18 War (which cancels out the first 42 pages), possesses both beauty and drama. If the phraseology is at times unversed and at others crude, it nevertheless reveals that picturesque imagination which is the birthright of the writer of fiction. Scenes ring true and characters live; moreover, combined, as the story is, with interesting and informative matter about the habits and activities of that wonderful creature the beaver, the whole presents a very lively and pleasing book." Dugmore's re-write appears to have acted on Ambrose's advice, as follows: "It is emphasized that all reference to the War should be excluded, and here, no doubt, the Author, in his so obviously fertile imagination, can provide a new background for his commencing chapters. I think it would be preferable to introduce the dog earlier in the script and to re-title the story 'Quills '."

Scope and Contents note:
A draft of a novel about the war-time romance and marriage of a British soldier with artistic talent. This novel was previously entitled "His Friend Peter" and it is under this title that the accompanying criticism by R.H. Ambrose deals with the work. "This is a remarkably good attempt at fiction. Indeed, I am of the opinion that the author has a definite flair for work of this kind. The construction of the story is good, the unraveling of the 'plot' very well achieved and the reader's attention held to the end, all good features. Unfortunately much of the work is now out of date and although quite an amount of the script could be retained (subject to revision of unnecessarily prolonged scenes), the story would have to be brought up to date before submission to publishers. This would entail modernizing and re-writing at least 50% of the manuscript. I hope the author will undertake this, for there is undoubted talent in the script."
