Derrick is an Ideal 80Q, 136 feet high. Rig is removable and will be taken away when drilling is finished. Small barge at right next to rig is fuel supply barge for diesels. String of boats near rig are living quarters, dining and kitchen barge, and power supply for living quarters. Also drilling barge as crane lifts pipe straightener." [Elisofon field notes, August 1959-December 1959]
This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
