Biographical / Historical:
Alfred Williams Anthony (1860-1939) was a theologian, author, and educator in Lewiston, Maine. He served in various roles for the General Conference of Freewill Baptists, the Maine chapter of the Religious Education Association, and the Committee on Goodwill between Jews and Christians. Anthony also served on the boards of trustees for Bates College, Hillsdale College, and Brown University.

Biographical / Historical:
Painter; Catskill, N.Y. Cole lived most of his life in New York City even though he studied abroad. He was elected member of National Academy in 1826.
Provenance:
Material on reels D6, D39, D40 lent for microfilming 1961 by the Detroit Institute of Art. Material on reels ALC 1-ALC 4 lent for microfilming 1964 by the New York State Library. Paintbrushes were discovered 1964 by S.J. Fishburne, Albany Institute restorer, in basement of Cole's house. He turned them over to the Institute's director, Janet MacFarlane, who donated them to AAA, 1965.

A journal; watercolor and pencil sketches; and a photograph.
REEL 3569: A handwritten copy, ca. 1892, of a journal kept by John Cranch from 1831 to 1833 while studying in Italy. The journal contains descriptions of Italian art, architecture and scenery, an account of Cranch's physical and emotional state of health and his drawing and painting activities, and annotated pencil sketches. Cranch's travelling companions were Thomas Cole and Henry and Horatio Greenough. The journal was hand copied by Cranch's wife, Charlotte. Also included are 6 watercolor and pencil sketches, 1856 and 1886-1887.

Scope and Contents:
A letter, Oct. 7, 1896, in which Cole writes of an enclosed sketch of Boston drawn by his father (he estimates ca. 1828) which he gives to the Gages as an expression of appreciation for their hospitality while he visited Boston; and a letter, Oct. 19, 1896, in which Cole discusses the same sketch and the death of a dear friend.
Biographical / Historical:
Thomas Cole (b. 1848) was the posthumous child of landscape, portrait and religious painter Thomas Cole and Maria Barstow Cole. The senior Cole died February 11 or 12, 1848, of complications stemming from pleurisy. There were three other children: Theodore (born January 1, 1838), Mary (born 1839), and Emily (born 1843).

Selected letters, sketches, writings, clippings and printed material collected by Simon Gratz, primarily from the "Painters, sculptors, and engravers" section (ca. 400 items) of the Cultural life, arts and sciences autograph series. Other sections filmed include Benjamin West correspondence; Charles Thomson correspondence; Joshua Humphreys letters; and one or more letters from the following categories: American miscellaneous, European painters and sculptors, Chaplains colonial wars and revolution, Roman Catholic prelates, British Authors, British literary misc., European explorers and antiquaries, American poets, Univ. presidents, American scientists, American authors, American prose, American literary misc., U.S. Senators, and others.
The Painters, sculptors, and engravers section contains ca. 400 items, primarily letters, of prominent eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth century American artists, such as Albert Bierstadt, William Merritt Chase, Thomas Cole, John Singleton Copley, Asher B. Durand, Charles Willson Peale, John Singer Sargent, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, John Trumbull, and others. Many of the letters are addressed to Albert Rosenthal. Also included are sketches, writings, clippings, and printed material pertaining to the artists. The Benjamin West papers, 1877-1819, (reel P23, fr. 1-85) include letters to West, letters from and about West, and cards, a certificate, and engraving of him.
The Charles Thomson papers (reels P21, fr. 800-813 and P22, fr. 1-7) include material relating to craftsmen in New York and Philadelphia, 1784-1787; correspondence with Joseph Delaplaine, 1816-1817, concerning Delaplaine's having a portrait of Thomson painted by Bass Otis; a letter to Thomson from G.P. Norris, Jr., Jan. 26, 1819, referring to Trumbull's painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence; and bills from cabinetmaker Alexander Anderson. The Humphreys' letters are from Charles Willson Peale, Mar. 4, 1795, and William Rush, Apr. 30, 1795.

Volume II contains Cole's signature inside the front cover and his handwritten reaction to Dunlap's biography of him (p. 350-367), written in light pencil. Accompanying the texts is a photocopy of transcriptions of Cole's notes, compiled by Bard McNulty(?).

Provenance:
The copy of Tuckerman's book was donated in 1958 by Robert McIntyre. The photographs, along with the extra illustrated edition of Henry Tuckerman's, "Book of the Artists..." (1867) were donated in 1960 by McIntyre. The folio was one of the 25 copies produced, possibly acquired by McIntyre through auction of the library of S.K. Cleven of Iowa handled by Anderson Galleries in 1915. The photographs were removed from the folio prior to its transfer to the Smithsonian American Art Museum Library. Photographer and provenance information (annotated) from Putnam's Monthly Advertiser is enclosed with the original folio housed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum Library.
