Also includes Latham, R. G., letter to Bureau of Ethnology, transmitting the above "copy of a Manuscript concerning which Mr. Gatschet made an enquiry...." Putney, S. W. [London] January 2, 1883. Autograph Letter Signed 1 page.
Biographical / Historical:
James P. Howley, The Beothuks or Red Indians, Cambridge, University Press, 1915, page 300, cites R. G. Latham, "Varieties of Man," Comparative Philology, London, 1850 as pronouncing the Beothuk language to be "distinctly Algonkin" on the basis of "a hitherto unpublished Beothuk vocabulary with which I have been kindly furnished by my friend Dr. King of the Anthropological Society." Presumably the "Dr. King" referred to by Latham is Richard King, M.D., a contributor to the Journal of the Ethnological Society of London, volume 1, 1848;
he is listed in the Contents of the volume as "Dr. King, Honorary Secretary of the Ethnological Society." The printed "List of the Ethnological Society of London," London, 1855 includes among the Fellows Richard King, M. D., Savile-row, and also David King, M. D., Eltham, Kent.
