"No. 1 -- Alice Erle Beasley, 1941 Maid of Cotton, sitting atop a cotton-wrapped bale of cotton in the patio of the Department of Agriculture administration building, gives a miniature cotton-wrapped bale to Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard, of Indiana. The Secretary has in his hand an invitation to the Memphis Cotton Carnival, May 13-17, signed by Gov. Cooper. The cotton house of the Surplus Marketing Administration, Marketing Division, Department of Agriculture, is in the background."
