United States of America -- Iowa -- Polk County -- Des Moines
Scope and Contents:
The folder includes a narrative history, a copy of a 1928 House and Garden article about the house, a description and worksheet, a plan of the garden, a plant list, and one related slide. The garden is noted for its Italianate atmosphere, its multi-level design, and its use of a wide range of perennials, trees, shrubs, and other plantings.
General:
"'Casa Cadenta' was modeled after a small villa in Italy and was featured in House and Garden magazine in July 1928. The present owners, for the 41 years of their residency, have maintained an Italianate feeling. Lovely old vine-covered brick and stone walls, brick walks, and steps lead to the several different levels, which include formal beds and terraced lawns partially shaded by old trees, and a variety of ground covers and shrubs. The sweep of lawn is enclosed by hedges. A perennial and kitchen garden can be viewed from the kitchen."

The international contestants raced for money prizes, and the event attracted thousands of spectators, including President Taft. Among the nineteen aviators were: Glenn Curtiss, Charles Foster Willard, A.V. Roe, Claude Graham-White, Clifford Harmon, Walter Brookings, Arthur Johnson, M. Didier Masson, William Christmas, Greely Curtis, and Thomas Baldwin. Air meet competitors challenged each other in nine events: Speed, Altitude, Duration, Distance, Slow Lap, Getaway, Airway, Dropping Bombs on Battle ship, and the Boston Globe Special. Biographical / Historical:
After making a reputation with lighter-than-air craft, Thomas Scott Baldwin turned to heavier-than-air flying machines in 1909. By 1911 he had built several airplanes and had gained extensive experience as an exhibition pilot. He began testing a new airplane in the spring of 1911. It was similar to the basic Curtiss pusher design that was becoming quite popular with builders by this time, but it was innovative in that it was constructed of steel tubing. It was powered by a 60-horsepower Hall-Scott V-8. Baldwin called his new machine the Red Devil III, and thereafter each of his airplanes would be known as a Baldwin Red Devil. Baldwin built approximately six Red Devils. Most were powered by the Hall-Scott, but Curtiss engines were also occasionally used. By mid-1911, Baldwin was training pilots, taking up passengers, and performing regularly with Red Devil aircraft at air meets. He advertised Red Devils for sale into 1913.
