The microfilmed Józef and Teresa Bakós papers include biographical information; correspondence; writings by Teresa and Józef; exhibition announcements and catalogs; and clippings. Also included are photographs of Józef and Teresa, their family and friends, and works of art; as well as printed material.
Biographical / Historical:
Józef Bakós (1891-1977) was a painter in Sante Fe, New Mexico. He is best known for his Western landscapes. Bakós was a founding member of the Modernist art group Los Cinco Pintores (the five painters) with Walter Mruk, Fremont Ellis, Willard Nash, and Will Shuster. He married Teresa Bakós in 1927.

Teresa Bakós (1884-1974) was an Italian-born painter in Santa Fe.

Scope and Contents:
An interview of Jozef G. and Teresa Bakos conducted by Sylvia Loomis on 1965 April 15 for the Archives of American Art.
Bakos speaks of his background and education; moving to Santa Fe in 1920; founding the group Los Cinco Pintores; the art community in Santa Fe in the 1920s; going to work on the easel painting project of the Federal Art Project; his feelings about the FAP; his opinions of modern art; his post-FAP career; and commissions he received. Jozef Bakos' wife, Teresa, is also present.

Photographs of the Sloans in and about their ranch in Santa Fe. Two photographs show Sloan painting in his studio, and two show him making a bookshelf. Other people pictured include: Jozef Bakos, Teresa Bakos, and Will Shuster. Copyprints of original negatives made by Len Bouche.
Biographical / Historical:
John Sloan (1871-1951) was a painter, printmaker, illustrator, and teacher from New York, N.Y. and Santa Fe, N.M. He was a member of the artists' group known as "the eight."
Ernest Knee (1907-1982) was a Canadian photographer who worked primarily in New Mexico.
Provenance:
Donated 1972 by Sylvia Loomis. Microfilmed 1973 with Photographs of Artists Collection I and scanned in 2003.
