The East Village Area X Gallery records measure 2.4 linear feet and date from 1977-1988. The collection consists primarily of artists files for fifteen artists represented by or of interest to the gallery. The files are varied but may include biographical information, correspondence, financial and inventory records, printed materials, and photographs. Gallery records include scattered financial records, publicity files, and printed materials.
Scope and Content Note:
The East Village Area X Gallery records measure 2.4 linear feet and date from 1977-1988. The collection consists primarily of artists files for fifteen artists represented by or of interest to the gallery. The files are varied but may include biographical information, correspondence, financial and inventory records, printed materials, and photographs. Gallery records include scattered financial records, publicity files, and printed materials.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged as 4 series:

Series 1: Artists Files, 1977-1988 (Boxes 1-2; 1.5 linear feet)

Series 2: Finacial Records, 1984-1987 (Box 2; 0.5 linear feet)

Series 3: Publicity Files, 1980-1987 (Box 3; 0.3 linear feet)

Series 4: Printed Material, circa 1980-1987 (box 3; 3 folders)
Historical Note:
The Area X Gallery was founded in New York City by Bobbie Sioux Xuereb (Goldberg) in February 1984. Located at 200 E. 10th St., the gallery was part of the larger East Village art scene of the 1980s. Among the artists represented by gallery were Keith Achepohl, John Himmelfarb, Leon Johnson, Michael McCollum, and Louis Mueller. As with many of the East Village galleries, the Area X Gallery closed in 1987.

The records of the Area X Gallery were donated by Bobbie Sioux Xuereb, the gallery's founder and director, in 1998.

Articles (mostly photocopies) and magazines about 8BC; photographs, mainly of club performances; slides; scrapbooks, and a 331/3 recording, "Poo Poo Bomb." The material was compiled by Cornelius Conboy, and mostly relates to publicity of the club's events. Also found are books and articles on the East Village scene, and other clubs, galleries, and performance spaces operating during the 1980s.
Biographical / Historical:
Multimedia gallery and performance art club; East Village, N.Y., located in the East Village, N.Y., on 8th St. between B and C. Cornelius Conboy was a co-founder and owner. The club opened October 31, 1983, and closed October 20, 1985.

Scope and Contents:
An interview of Claudia DeMonte conducted 1991 February 13-1991 April 24, by Liza Kirwin, for the Archives of American Art.
DeMonte recalls her childhood and growing up in Astoria, New York; her Italian heritage and Catholic education; her early work including the "trade pieces"; the calendar she produced for the Corcoran Gallery show "Five Plus One" in 1976; her marriage to artist Ed McGowin; moving from Washington, D.C. to New York; the making and meaning of her "Claudia dolls"; exhibiting at the Gracie Mansion Gallery; the art community in the East Village in the early 1980's; the dealer Gracie Mansion; gallery representation outside of New York; critical acceptance of her art; collecting the work of Southern self-taught artists and the influence of Sister Gertrude Morgan and James Son Ford Thomas; work methods and techniques; autobiographical and feminist themes; teaching at the university of Maryland from 1972 to the present; and new directions in her art.
