Biographical material; an interview with Benton concerning his Truman Library mural; correspondence, including many illustrated letters to his parents written while he was in school, studying in Paris, and in the Navy in Virginia; a letter from Thomas Craven and one from Stanton Macdonald-Wright; manuscripts, including "An American in Art," "An Artist in America," "Death of Grant Wood," "American Regionalism," "Life in Paris," "The Intimate Story," "Politics," and notes on Jackson Pollock; notes and notebooks containing writings; a handwritten manuscript of his speech at the dedication of his Truman Library mural; a few sketches and plates of his illustration for TOM SAWYER; a catalog, printed articles by Benton, and clippings; research material; and a photograph of Benton.

Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was an American Regionalist painter in Kansas City, Mo.

Two broadsides advertising activities for Thomas Hart Benton Homecoming Day in Neosho Missouri; a printed letter handed out to visitors during his painting of the mural at the Missouri State Capital building; 3 letters and a typescript of a booklet about Benton's mural in the Missouri capital (all photocopies); and a photocopy of a letter to the editors of the ART DIGEST by Benton.

Material on reel 2786 (fr. 1221-1269) donated 1980 by Nancy Edelman; (fr. 1270-1274) transferred from the NMAA-NPG Library to the Archives of American Art, 1977; (fr. 1275-1277) donated 1965 by Mrs. Arthur L. Sultan; and provenance of material on (fr. 1278-1284) is unknown.

Biographical / Historical:
Sculptor, painter, etcher, illustrator; Canton, N.Y. Born on the east coast of the U.S. Due to ill health, went West, became a cowboy and gained inspiration for his portrayals of the life on the western plains.
Provenance:
Microfilmed 1984 along with other selected art related papers from the Gilcrease Institute.
