The George Goodwin interviews relating to Frank Lloyd Wright measure 0.2 linear feet and date to 1992. Interviews conducted by Goodwin for the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives at Taliesin West, Scottsdale, Arizona, with architects, students, and clients who knew Wright and others who offer opinions on his work. Interviewees include: architects Graham Gund (1 cassette), Philip Cortelyou Johnson (1 cassette), Kevin Roche (1 cassette), printmaker and mural painter Richard Haas (2 cassettes), a Taliesin apprentice with Wright in the 1950s, who has portrayed Wright and the Chicago School in his murals; and Loren Pope (1 cassette), a Wright client from the mid-1930s. Included are brief summaries of the Pope and Roche interviews.

Series contains video interviews with 35 artists, curators, and an art collector, conducted by the staff of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago between 1979 and 1986, on 107 U-Matic videocassettes. The first set of interviews in the series are with contemporary artists who had solo exhibitions at the museum between 1979 and 1985, including Chuck Close, Roger Brown, Eric Fischl, Peter and Ritzi Jacobi, Steve Keister, Sol Le Witt, and collector Dennis Adrian, whose Chicago art collection was exhibited in 1982. The remainder of the series contains four sets of interviews and other footage relating to exhibitions and programming, including the 1979 exhibition Wall Painting - Ryman, Hafif, Pozzi, Jackson, Yasuda; the 1981 exhibition Kick out the jams: Detroit's Cass Corridor 1963-1977; and the 1983 exhibition and educational program Eleven Chicago Artists, created with Chicago's N.A.M.E. gallery, which traveled to area high schools featuring short video documentaries about each artist that were created from the footage on the tapes in this collection. The last set includes interviews with architects Dirk Lohan and George Danforth and historian Franz Schulze, created for the 1986 program "Mies van der Rohe Remembered," celebrating the centennial of the architect's birth.

The main content of the recordings are interviews with the artists or other subjects, ranging from 1 to 2 hours in duration. Some of the tapes contain footage of exhibition installations, artworks, or footage of the artist working. Tapes with content other than interview footage are typically labeled "Inserts" referring to material that was shot to be inserted into the edited version of the interviews. The museum's education department created edited versions of many of these interviews to accompany exhibitions, but the edited versions are not in the current collection, except for one, entitled "Shaking in the Cape of Good Hope" by Karl Wirsum. Note that the two Sol Le Witt tapes are numbered 4 and 6 and no other Le Witt tapes are found in the collection.
Arrangement:
Individual interviews are arranged at the beginning of the series alphabetically. The remainder of the series is arranged by exhibition. The videocassettes for the Wall Paintings and Cass Corridor exhibitions are arranged in the sequence in which they were shot, and those for the Eleven Chicago Artists exhibition are arranged alphabetically by artist.

Reimar continues on problems with wing placement on Pulqui Dos, several crashes, Behrens, Manuel killed, Reimar disagreed with Tank [16:00]; [18:00] Reimar continues to discuss problems with Pulqui Dos, using photos; [26:33] Tank was an excellent pilot, as an engineer OK, not a very good designer, he was not an "architect" - combination of engineer and designer. [26:58]...Therefore the Pulqui had failed, but you didn"t write that it had failed, the Argentine authorities would be outraged, you said "the Pulqui has been in difficulties" - Peron's personality, lack of education, inferiority complex, Reimar draws parallels to Scheidhauer (did not finish secondary school) and his personality traits [43:05]. [45:07] Reimar discusses why Multhopp and Tank could not work together to fix Pulqui II. [52:47] to [54:10] niceties about Myhra's next visit, etc… [54:12] Reimar elaborates on Tank, "one of the best pilots I ever have seen," Tank flew Pulqui II most times. Reimar on Manuel, title and rank, tasks Scheidhauer to help him fly Pulqui II, Scheidhauer refuses, flying qualities of Pulqui II, etc. [60:24] Reimar draws Pulqui II, talks about lift disribution and aerodynamics.

Biographical / Historical:
Walter Landor (1913-1995), son of Jewish Bauhaus architect Fritz Landauer, came to the United States in 1938 with the design team for the British Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. He emigrated to the United States in 1941, launching a small design firm in San Francisco. Landor started out doing package design for a largely local and regional clientele (including many West Coast wineries and breweries), although he soon developed a client list that included some of the world's largest and most prestigious corporations. Corporate identity projects were an important specialization. In addition to his own considerable design abilities, Landor had a gift for inspiring and organizing the creativity of a group of associates, and for developing lasting and productive relationships with his clients. The firm developed particular strength in its portfolio of airlines, financial institutions and consumer goods, and prided itself on a network of international clients. From the beginning, Landor linked design to research in consumer behavior, developing increasingly sophisticated methods for evaluating the effectiveness of his designs. This collection documents Walter Landor's remarkable career, the significant body of corporate identity, packaging and other commercial imagery produced by Landor Associates, and the interplay between industrial design and American consumer culture.

The collaborative research project Immigrant Entrepreneurship: German-American Business Biographies, 1720 to the Present sheds new light on the entrepreneurial and economic capacity of immigrants by investigating the German-American example in the United States. It traces the lives, careers and business ventures of eminent German-American business people of roughly the last two hundred and ninety years, integrating the history of German-American immigration into the larger narrative of U.S. economic and business history.

General:
The Whim is a seaside New England garden comprised of flower and shrub borders and a sunken quadrangle planted along the foundation walls of demolished greenhouses, with follies, sculptures, steps to the ocean planted with lavender, and swaths of lawn. The walls and privet hedges trimmed to calibrated heights protect the flowers from the salt spray and winds off the ocean while not blocking the view. The 3.4 acre property has other garden areas surrounding the lawns, including a border of bright blue Nikko hydrangeas that are fed aluminum sulfate, a crabapple border, a shed draped with a climbing rose, a secret garden with kousa dogwood and viburnum, and a shady garden walk alongside the house. Garden areas are named for the animal and other sculptures that are featured, including a heron by Walter Matia in the heron quadrangle, eagles at the head of the eagle borders, and rabbits copied from the ones that were at Chateau-sur-Mer, a Newport mansion.
This property was once part of a larger property that had gardens designed by Beatrix Farrand for her aunt, the author Edith Wharton. The Evangeline climbing rose that covers the tool shed was transplanted from the Wharton garden many years ago, and renamed the Miss Newport rose by the owner. Friends and associates have contributed design ideas and artifacts to this garden: the mushroom shaped garden furniture once belonged to a friend, the gazebo was purchased and installed by one of the gardeners, and the steps were fabricated from discarded Newport curbing.

General:
Created in 2010, this Asian dry-landscape garden features more than 200 bonsai and overlooks a stone house and woodlands within a one and one-quarter acre hillside property in North Carolina. The owners named their garden after the Temple of the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, Japan, and installed a pavilion used for entertaining, winter storage of some of the bonsai collections, and for storing gardening supplies. The rectangular garden and adjacent lawn are enclosed by low stone walls where the smaller bonsai containers are displayed, each sitting on a revolving stone to facilitate watering and sun exposure. The surface of the garden is brown crushed gravel, with islands of mondo grass and stonecrop planted with Japanese maples, boxwood, dwarf hostas, rockwork, and two large boulders echoing Tenryuji's boulder arrangement in Kyoto. A statue of the Buddha overlooks a small pond and a Burmese brass gong hangs at the pavilion.
The owners became interested in bonsai and Asian design while living in New York, and have been active in the National Bonsai Friendship Foundation, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington DC, and the World Bonsai Federation. Two ancient trees in their collection were gifts for service to the federation.

General:
Starting with a one-acre property that had a large 1890's Victorian House, carriage house, swimming pool, and garden designed by landscape architect Frederick W. Peck, the owners divided the property about 30 years ago and built a passive solar house for themselves at the rear. Their portion included the swimming pool and an allée of eight kousa dogwood trees, now about 50 years old. The Peck design incorporated evergreen, deciduous, and broad leaved shrubs including rhododendrons, skimmia, hydrangeas, and iteas as understory in the dogwood allée for a lush effect. The owners have added screening around the swimming pool using junipers and evergreens on the side seen from their house and taller evergreens and hollies on the far side. Their plant selections emphasize texture and year-round interest. Following Peck, they chose species that thrive in the Delaware Valley. Many of the plants were also grown from cuttings from garden club workshops, are divisions from friends' gardens or are divided plants from the Garden Club of America Plant Exchange (1980-2004). A pebbled terrace with a fountain was added as another feature of this garden.

General:
A husband and wife team created an arboretum and garden consisting of an exotic collection of 315 trees interspersed with 100 foot long rows of perennial flowers and shrubs. Priority traits for future tree acquisitions include weeping, twisted branching structure, golden leaf color, and leaf variegation. The owner carefully catalogs and documents all trees in the collection. The perennial plantings in rows provide texture and romance to the scientifically ordered tree collection. A sense of balance, proportion, texture and color are all based on design principals.

Hillcrest has been a farm by the side of the road for over a century. When the current owners moved in, it had orchards, a maple sugar house, fields, forests, but no gardens, not even a vegetable garden. Today, it is a farm with a tapestry of gardens, rustic and formal, woven into challenging topography.
