Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of the materials relating to Bruce Del Mar's airplane cabin pressurization and air quality engineering work, including: 82 3.25 by 4 inch glass lantern slides featuring images, graphs and charts of Del Mar's cabin pressurization work including work on the Douglas DC-4E (possibly for a lecture); reports; drawings; correspondence; and issues of Douglas' internal management newsletter. There are also several reports on air transportation of large cargo, including vehicular trailers.
Biographical / Historical:
Bruce Del Mar (b. 1913) graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. During his college summer breaks, Del Mar had worked at Douglas Aircraft Company, and after his graduation he returned to to Douglas full-time. At Douglas he worked with other scientists on airplane cabin pressurization, which would allow passengers to comfortably fly above 10,000 feet without oxygen masks. Del Mar, along with Douglas engineer Wolfgang Klemperer, held the patent for the first pressurization system of a commercial aircraft. In 1952, Del Mar used the money he received from royalties on his patents and inventions to found Del Mar Engineering Laboratories in Santa Monica, California. His company, later renamed Del Mar Avionics, built targeting systems for military aircraft. During later years, the company produced HydraSet, a hydraulic lifting device used to hoist space shuttles onto 747s for transport to Cape Kennedy and to move fuel rods in nuclear power plants. Besides his work in the aviation field, Del Mar also had great success in the medical field and in 1963 he was the first to patent and produce the Holter monitor, an electrocardiogram system that allowed physicians to track their patients' hearts continuously.

Summary:
F.C. Brown was a physicist and inventor who created and supervised the development of education exhibits, most notably as organizing director of the New York Museum of Science and Industry (part of the Museums of the Peaceful Arts), 1926-1931. He was also curator of physics exhibits at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, 1932-1937. Much of Brown's scientific research focused on the element selenium. He invented the phonopticon, an improvement on the optophone (invented by Fournier d'Albe, 1912). Material focuses on Dr. Brown's professional life: correspondence, photographs, photo albums, scrapbooks, and ephemera from the positions he held and research he conducted. Very little personal information is included.
Scope and Contents:
The material in the F. C. Brown Papers focuses primarily on Dr. Brown's professional life and includes correspondence, photographs, photo albums, scrapbooks and ephemera. Very little personal information is included. The collection is arranged into ten series.

Series 1, Biographical/General, 1905-1940, contains material which relates to Dr. Brown's personal life and research. Scientific publications, which do not relate directly to the professional positions he held, can be found here. Also included are some personal financial records and two photographic portraits of Dr. Brown.

Series 2, Correspondence, 1902-1964, undated, is arranged chronologically and pertains directly to Dr. Brown's career.

Series 3, Inventions, 1904-1942, documents Dr. Brown's inventions and include invention notebooks, loose notes, patent documents, correspondence, and an article announcing the invention of the phonopticon.

Series 4, U. S. Army Ordnance Department, 1918-1919, contains materials from Dr. Brown's tenure at the U. S. Army Ordnance Department. It includes a panoramic photograph and various official reports.

Series 5, U. S. Bureau of Standards, 1917-1926, contains assorted papers from the U. S. Bureau of Standards which date from 1917 to 1922, and also a few photographs, including a panoramic portrait of Bureau personnel in 1920.

Series 6, Museum Work, 1927-1940, consists of materials primarily dealing with Dr. Brown's work in the New York Museum of Science and Industry (part of the Museums of the Peaceful Arts) and the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Of note is material relating to the dedication ceremony at which the airplane Bremen was given to the Museums of the Peaceful Arts and two scrapbooks which contain clippings, brochures, and photos showcasing developments and events in science, industry and the Museums of the Peaceful Arts.

Series 7, Photographs: Museums of the Peaceful Arts, Museum of Science and Industry, New York City, undated, is comprised of photographs from the Museums of the Peaceful Arts including such subjects as events, exhibits, displays, models, objects, machines, devices, and people. The majority of the photographs are undated.

Series 8, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), 1932-1937, includes two photo albums and a scrapbook which deal with the planning of the AAAS annual science exhibitions.

Series 9, Photographs: Other Subjects, 1907-1939, is comprised of photographs covering subjects such as exhibits, displays, objects, and people.

Series 10, Miscellaneous, 1910-circa 1945, includes invitations, programs, brochures, miscellaneous publications and other writings, notes and calculations, and papers from a series of radio broadcasts on science. There is also a 1939 textbook, Experimental Heat, Sound and Light, with accompanying notes and annotations.

Summary:
Sam DeVincent loved music and art and began collecting sheet music with lithographs at an early age.

Series 1: Transportation contains circa 3,900 pieces of sheet music documenting the development of and popular attitudes towards transportation technology in the United States.

Scope and Contents note:
The Transportation series contains circa 3,900 pieces of sheet music documenting the development of and popular attitudes towards transportation technology in the United States. Those modes of transportation--airplanes and automobiles in particular--that developed during the heyday of Tin Pan Alley sheet music publication (1890s-1930s) are especially well represented. Boats and boating and railroads are also large sub-series. Two narrow topics are especially rich in the DeVincent transportation series: the Charles Lindbergh file (circa 200 items) and the Ford automobile file (circa 150 items).

The material dates from the 1800s to the 1980s; the bulk of the material is from the 1890s to the 1930s. The earliest items are in the Boats and Boating sub-series. Most pre-1840 imprints are not dated. Estimates have been made for the dates of many early imprints by checking publisher and address of the publisher in the "Index of Publishers, Engravers and Printers" in volume III of Richard Wolfe's Secular Music in America 1801-1825: A Bibliography and in Oscar Sonneck's A Bibliography of Early Secular American Music. Several sheets that appear to be very old could not be dated by this method.

The Ephemera file, arranged in the same sub-series as the sheet music, is described on the page, following the container list. The transportation ephemera file constitutes one and a half document boxes.

Woodman speaks of frequent moves with her family during her childhood; her father's woodworking skills; gaining an interest in arts and crafts at four when she made a tablecloth with crayon drawings; attending summer camps, including Girl Scout Camp, where she participated in arts and crafts activities; being the first girl to take shop in her middle school; making model airplanes for air raid wardens during World War II; her interest in making functional objects; her introduction to clay and hand-building in high school; attending the School for American Craftsmen in New York City; collaborating with fellow students; her early desire to be a "craftsperson and not an artist"; her work with silk-screen fabric for The Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia and glass at CIRVA in Marseille, France; teaching at the University of Colorado and the City of Boulder Recreation Department; working at the European Ceramic Work Center in Den Bosch, Holland, and the Bellagio Study Center in Italy; her studios in New York, Colorado, and Italy; her travels to India, The Netherlands, and Mexico; living in New Mexico, New York, Colorado, and Italy; her business Roadrunner Pottery in New Mexico with partner Elenita Brown; collaborative projects with Joyce Kozloff, Cynthia Carlson, Bud Shark, Judith Solodkin, and her husband George Woodman; developing a following in New York; how being a woman has affected her work and how she enjoys working with other women artists; the change of market for American crafts; Italian, Greek, and Etruscan influences; teaching experiences; the importance of getting reviews in art magazines; and the strong support from her husband George, a painter. An interview with Doug Wheeler conducted 2017 April 4, by Hunter Drohojowska-Philp, for the Archives of American Art, at Drohojowska-Philp's home, in Los Angeles, California.
Doug Wheeler discusses his 2017 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, PSAD Synthetic Desert III; his relationship with the art dealer Doug Chrismas and the art collector Giuseppe Panza di Biumo; his residency in Boissano, Italy, and time there with his wife, Bridget Johnson; the impact of his experiences while flying in small airplanes and spending time in isolated desert environments on his sense of aesthetics and his art; his time at the Chouinard Art Institute as a student of Emerson Woelffer; his original interest in studying commercial art; his interactions with Robert Irwin and James Turrell. Wheeler also describes growing up in Globe, Arizona, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, and the early divorce of his parents; his father's career as a doctor in Arizona who flew airplanes to his patients, and his early exposure to flying; his time as a youngster working on ranches and spending time with other families; his experiences as a troublemaker in a social club at University High School in Los Angeles in the 1950s; working as a mechanical draftsman at Douglas Aircraft; his show with Larry Bell and Robert Irwin at the Tate Gallery, London, in 1970; his 2012-2016 installations at the David Zwirner gallery; his time away from the art world and work as a Hollywood screenwriter; his relocation to northern New Mexico, and the critical response to the Guggenheim PSAD Synthetic Desert III show. Wheeler also recalls Bill Moore, Larry Bell, Nancy Harrington, Billy Al Bengston, John Altoon, Ed Ruscha, Ed Reep, Edwin Shneidman, Edy de Wilde as well as Coosje van Bruggen, Robert Graham, Leo Castelli, Irving Blum, Riko Mizuno, Christophe de Menil, Julia Brown, Hugh Davies, Dan Flavin among others.

Mr. Metcalf discusses his early years in Amherst, Massachusetts; beginnings as a maker with modeling clay and plastic airplane models; undergraduate years at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York in the late 1960s; early interest in architecture; early disenchantment with modernist discourse and theory; introduction to Marxist theory and idealism of the 1960s; summer trip to California in 1970; return to the East Coast upon the death of his father; return to college, transferring into jewelry in his senior year; influence of his teacher Michael Jerry; seeing the work in "Objects: USA" exhibition (1969) and influence of the work of J. Fred Woell, Richard Mawdsley, L.
