Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a oversized scrapbook with a wooden cover which contains photographs of the construction of the bases on Tinian. The following Tinian construction sites/projects are covered: general aerial and ground images of Tinian; the waterfront; tank farms; water supply; army camps; bomb dumps; airfields; road construction; and hospitals. There are also an additional thirty-five loose prints on the following subjects: Tinian airfields; aerial photographs (not of Tinian); invasion of the Marianas, including Japanese aircraft and pilots; and Boeing B-29s and nose art on Tinian.
Biographical / Historical:
Comdr. Marvin Y. Neeley was an engineer with the Seabees during World War II. Neely belonged to the Brigade 6, Twenty-Ninth Naval Construction Regiment, and he was involved with the construction of the bases on Tinian.

This collection consists of material collected by Walter J. Boyne in preparation for the writing of a series of articles about McCook Field. The collection consists of the following: numerous photographs, a small number of negatives, some technical notes and reports, correspondence, magazine clippings, a decal, publications, and several questionnaires. The photographic component consists of images of aircraft, both on the ground and airborne, as well as photos of parts of aircraft. In addition, there are photos of workers in the process of constructing airplanes and of crash tests and their results. A few personal photographs of members of the air crew can also be found within the collection. The questionnaires in the collection were created by Boyne and were sent in 1977 to various individuals who were connected with McCook Field in various capacities.
Biographical / Historical:
McCook Field, established in Dayton, Ohio in 1917, was the first military aviation facility developed for research and experimentation in the United States. The testing of airplanes, including new experimental models, continued until 1927 when the facility was closed. Operations were subsequently moved to nearby Wright Field, which later evolved into the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1948.

This collection consists of thirty-four copy prints concerning the 509th Composite Group, 393rd Bomb Squadron, personnel and aircraft during their service at Tinian, 1945. The following crew members are featured: Robert Petrolli; John Downey; Thomas Brumagin; Harry Davis; Edward Costello; Paul Tibbets; Myron Farya; Stanley G. Steinke; John Canton; and Norman Ray. There are also images of Tinian Island, especially the North Field, and of Boeing B-29s - including nose art shots.
Biographical / Historical:
John L. Downey was a bombardier aboard the Boeing B-29 "Laggin' Dragon" bomber. Lt. Downey was assigned to the 393rd Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group, which was stationed at Wendover Field, Utah, for training and North Field, Tinian Island, in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

This collection consists of the 22 color slides taken by Staley during his stay in Tinian. The images are of Tinian and units stationed there, including aircraft of the 509th Composite Group, the 6th Bomb Group, and the 504th Bomb Group. A few slides show 'Enola Gay' and her crew (with Colonel Paul Tibbets), and scenes of men celebrating the 'Enola Gay's' successful flight. Several slides show B-29 nose art and nicknames: 'Full House', 'The B.A. Bird', 'Doc's Deadly Dose', 'Cox's Army', 'The Ernie Pyle', 'The Herd of Bald Goats', 'The Spirit of Sammy', 'Snugglebunny', 'Earthquake McGoon', and 'Flak Alley'.
Biographical / Historical:
During World War II, George E. Staley worked for Bendix as a technical representative for their fuel injection system which was used in Boeing B-29 Superfortresses. In 1945 Staley was sent to Tinian for seven months, during which time the 'Enola Gay' made her historic flight.

This collection consists of copies of 107 color slides taken by Col. Schirmer at Davis-Monthan Field, Tucson, Arizona, circa 1946-1947. The collection also includes a copy of lecture notes for a slide presentation given by Col. Schirmer in 1981 entitled, "4105th Army Air Force Base Unit (Aircraft Storage) Davis-Monthan Field Arizona 1946-1947 and a Glimpse into the Past of MASDC and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base." (MASDC, the U. S. Air Force's Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center, is now known as the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center, or AMARC.) Many of the slides referenced in the lecture notes do not appear in this collection. The color slides depict predominantly B-29 aircraft of the 58th Bomb Wing (58BW) and its component units (40BG, 444BG, 462BG, and 468BG), but several B-29s of the 73BW, 313BW, and 314BW are also seen. Also included are 19 slides of C-47 aircraft, and a group of about a dozen slides that detail the cocooning process. Most photographs are close-up views which show aircraft nose art, nicknames, unit insignia, mission marks, and victory marks. A few historic aircraft are also pictured: the Boeing B-29 "The Great Artiste", the record-setting Boeing YB-29J "PacusanDreamBoat", the Boeing XB-19, and the Consolidated C-87 used during WWII by Wendell Wilkie. There is one slide that shows Lt. Col. Schirmer.
Biographical / Historical:
At the end of World War II, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (then Davis-Monthan Field) outside of Tucson, Arizona, was selected by the U. S. Army Air Forces as a storage site for hundreds of decommissioned aircraft, particularly excess Boeing B-29 Superfortresses and Douglas C-47 Skytrains. The C-47s began to arrive at the field in January 1946, and in September 1946, Lt. Colonel R. Frank Schirmer took command of the newly formed 4105th AAFBU (Acft. Stg.) [Army Air Forces Base Unit (Aircraft Storage)]. By 1947 a large number of B-29s had arrived at the field, and the 4105th began a preservation project to cocoon (or "mothball") a group of 479 B-29s. The cocooning process consisted of covering the aircraft with four layers of heavy sprayed-on plastic in four colors: yellow, red, black, and silver-the final coat was of heat-reflecting aluminum.

Biographical / Historical:
The United States Navy Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer) maintained record copies of engineering drawings for aviation equipment operated by the Navy and microfilm copies of these drawings were created by the Drawings and Microfilm Section of BuAer's Maintenance Division for the use of the Navy. In the mid 1980s, a portion of this drawing collection was loaned to the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) for processing by NASM personnel. In 1991, positive reference copies of microfilm, comprising some 3000 rolls, were loaned to NASM to assist in the processing of the hardcopy drawings and with the understanding that, should funding be available, NASM would duplicate the microfilm for its own collection as a "second security copy." The completion of the Archives II complex in College Park, MD in the 1990s allotted sufficient storage space to NARA's Cartographic and Architectural Branch for the RG72 drawing collection to be housed directly under NARA custody. As a result, NARA recalled its loan of the material, including the microfilm collection. The drawings were returned in 1994, but NARA granted an extension of the microfilm loan to allow NASM to duplicate portions of the collection which were relevant to NASM's artifact collection. The resulting 776 rolls of diazo 35mm film duplicates portions of microfilm contained in NARA RG72 and includes some records of the Drawings and Microfilm Section and Publications Section of BuAer's Maintenance Division.

This collection contains the file of still photographs taken by the Air Force Material Division at McCook Field, Wright Field, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The material consists of over 340,000 black and white and color photographs illustrating the design, development and testing of military aircraft; structural components; and personal, emergency, and survival equipment. The collection also contains documentation of unsatisfactory materials and components, aircraft accident investigations, publicity, and development of McCook Field facilities to the present day Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The majority of the photos were taken as integral parts of the testing or investigation procedure for inclusion in resulting reports.

In 1917 the United States Army Air Service established an aviation engineering section at McCook Field in Dayton, OH. In 1927 the Engineering Division, as it was then known, moved to nearby Wilbur Wright Field and there remained as the Air Force Material Division (AFMD) and Air Material Command (AMC) until Wright Field combined with Patterson Field to become Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1948. The Engineering Division was in charge of research and development for the Army Air Services and was a clearinghouse for the Army Air Services on aviation development worldwide.

The collection consists of reports and other documents on a variety of aviation-related topics, including general science (aeronautics, physics, chemistry, etc); military air service personnel, organization, and equipment for both US and foreign air forces; as well as operations, and so on. Information on foreign services and equipment is usually from military intelligence reports, although some foreing documents or translations are included. The material also includes a large section of test reports from the Material Division itself.

Summary:
This collection consists of duplicate microfilm of individual aircraft records for the United States Air Force (USAF). The microfilm covers aircraft owned by the US Army Air Service, Army Air Corps, Army Air Forces, USAF, and the National Guard starting in July of 1923 and including those dropped from the active inventory before June 30, 1955. (Master films are held by the Air Force Historical Research Center, Maxwell AFB, AL.) Each record card consists of a complete record of aircraft transfers (duty locations) from acceptance until retirement. Duty locations do not include unit, only theater/air base.
Scope and Contents:
Beginning in 1951, the USAF began microfilming the IARCs for retired aircraft. The first group filmed were aircraft retired as of May 1951 (119 rolls of 16mm microfilm), with additional sections including retirements through September 1952 and records "out of file" (not present in the retired aircraft file) in May 1951 (6 rolls) and retirements through May 1953 and records "out of file" in September 1952 (3 rolls). In 1971 the USAF microfilmed the records through 1954 for aircraft not retired by May 1953 (approximately 70 rolls) and all active aircraft from 1955 through 1964 (89 rolls). Later these various film series were designated by the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA; Maxwell AFB, AL), which maintains the original records, as ACR (May 1951 retirements), OA (out-of-file records from May 1951, retirements through September 1952 and May 1953), AC (aircraft active as of August 1954), and ACA (1955-1964 records).

Records were organized by military serial number, although some records were missorted and therefore filmed out of order. The project only encompassed the main IARC files and as a result the records maintained by the 15th SCU were filmed only in a few rare cases. Similarly the records maintained by overseas SCUs were not filmed. Thus the IARC records for wartime aircraft, particularly those transferred out of the Continental United States, remain incomplete.

The NASM holdings of these records consists of duplicate copies of the ACR and OA series of films only, comprising 128 rolls of microfilm. NASM rolls are identified consistent with the AFHRA designation scheme. The following listing gives the roll identification (ACR- or OA- number), the serial number range, and any special notes relating to the particular roll. The note "NASM M###" gives the roll identification assigned by the National Air and Space Museum in the 1960s when all microfilm in the NASM collection was sequentially numbered regardless of collection; these numbers are included for historical purposes and are cross-referenced in M-number order in Appendix 1 (page 8).

Biographical/Historical note:
The United States Air Force and its predecessors1 have maintained a variety of records relating to the aircraft operated by the service. Beginning in 1923, the Air Service maintained individual records for each aircraft added to the inventory listing location and activity from its acceptance by the service until its retirement from the inventory. Such records have had a number of official names --Aircraft Master Record, Individual Aircraft Record Card (IARC), etc. --but are most commonly called "Aircraft History Cards." Originally, these records were manually compiled from unit inventories, morning reports, and so on, but the increased use of automated systems in the 1940s allowed automatic compilation and machine printing of the IARC entries after 1940.

IARCs do not record the entire history and activity of an individual aircraft. They do not include information about missions or crews, nor do they record exact locations or manners of loss. Rather, they serve as a compilation of the locations, transfers, and "controlling activity" (the unit responsible for reporting the aircraft) of the aircraft at a set time. The exact type of information and its manner of presentation changes over time and can be best described in chronological groups:

through c.1940 This period actually covers a variety of record card styles, but the data is hand-written or typed. The information follows the printed columns on the card. The information generally consists of reporting location, inventory date (month and fiscal year2), and flying time (both total and during the inventory period). The reporting activity is generally the base, rather than the unit. Transfers between bases are included as separate listings which include the authority for the transfer.

c.1940 --November 1942 During this period the USAAF switched to the use of electronic accounting machine (EAM) technology for inventory reporting and this allowed the automated compilation and printing of IARC data. The data and card presentation remains constant from the forms in use before the change, but the cards are machine printed, rather than hand written. Some data is abbreviated; location, for example, is given by a seven-character abbreviation.

November 1942 --April 1944 At the end of 1942 the responsibility for maintaining the inventory and individual aircraft status information was shifted from Headquarters, Air Materiel Command to one of several Statistical Control Units (SCU) within the Continental United States (CONUS) or overseas. IARCs were still prepared as before for newly-purchased aircraft and added to the main IARC file to track each aircraft from the factory to its initial assignment within CONUS or to an overseas shipping destination. The 15th SCU was responsible for tracking aircraft inventory and status information for aircraft within the CONUS and developed its own form for recording this data. The 15th SCU forms radically changed the data presentation --flying time was no longer recorded, some unit information was recorded for the first time, and location either appears as the abbreviations used previously or as a four-character shipping destination code. No effort was made to transfer 15th SCU data to the IARC master file, so that no activity was recorded on IARC cards during this period. Further, the inventory records on aircraft outside of the CONUS were maintained by SCUs in theater; as a result the entries on IARCs end with their transfer overseas, save for the final entry showing their removal from the inventory or until they returned to a CONUS location.

April 1944 --September 1949 At the beginning of this period, entries again appear on the main IARCs, although the concentration on CONUS-based aircraft continued until after the end of World War II. There are no records for aircraft transferred overseas once they leave the CONUS until they are dropped from the inventory, return to the United States, or until the reporting requirements changed after the end of the war. During this period the entries recorded a change in the status of the aircraft --either a transfer of station or a change in the usage of the aircraft. Entries record the reporting and other involved station and unit and the type, nature, and date of the change. The exact presentation of the data varies slightly over the period but generally involves a number of codes used to speed transmission of the data.

September 1949 and subsequent Beginning September 1949, IARCs entries were printed in batches, giving rise to groups of entries followed by a "bookkeeping" line indicating the serial number and number of entries printed. The data presentation for each entry remains similar to the entries from the previous period.

During the machine-printed period (from 1940 on) IARC entries become more and more difficult to understand due to the increasing data density and the use of one- or two-character codes for a variety of information. The Museum staff is currently preparing a guide to understanding the USAF IARC, which will treat the various code groups and data presentations in greater depth.

This collection consists of 8000 reels of 35 mm microfilm engineering drawings of aircraft and engines from the early years through World War II. The microfilm contains engineering drawings, reports, and standards covering aircraft, engines, and other equipment used by the USAF and its predecessors. The original documents filmed were in a variety of media, in some case the original drawing was filmed, in others a blueprint or other duplicate was filmed instead of the original. Because of the variation in the quality of the original document and variations in the quality of the filming process, the quality of the filmed image varies considerably throughtout the collection
Biographical / Historical:
The United States Air Force (USAF) Engineering Drawing Section was established in 1917 to maintain and reproduce engineering data for the USAF. The Drawing Collection was originally developed by the USAF for two major functions: to create a historical record of the equipment operated by the USAF and its predecessors and to provide engineering drawings of current equipment for maintenance operation centers requiring such information. Engineering drawings of then-current equipment and extant engineering drawings for obsolete equipment were microfilmed either by the USAF, by vendors under contract to the USAF, or by the manufactures. Additional microfilm created by or for the United States Navy (USN) covering some aircraft also operated by the USAF were added to the collection.

Summary:
This collection consists of duplicate microfilm of individual aircraft records for USN aircraft. (Master films held by Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Department of the Navy). Each record consists of location of aircraft at each monthly inventory, as well as listings for transfer of custody between regular inventories. Includes information on units, flight times, time since overhaul, etc. from acceptance by USN until stricken from USN register. Material consists of five major sets: Aircraft, 1911-1949 (all aircraft, all records); Stricken Aircraft, 1949-1962 (records for aircraft removed from USN inventory during time period); Stricken Aircraft, Dec 1962-Jun 1965 (records for aircraft removed from USN inventory during time period); Active Aircraft, Dec 1962-Jun 1965 (records for aircraft still on USN inventory in Jun 1965); and Active Aircraft, Jun 1965 and subs. The records of active aircraft are in fiscal year groupings. The records are received by fiscal year as they are declassified. For the most part the aircraft purchased on Navy controlled contracts for supply under Lend-Lease or later similar defense aid programs are not included in these records. There are over 120 reels of 35 mm and over 60 reels of 16 mm microfilm holding these records.
Scope and Contents note:
In 1963 the Navy began microfilming the machine-printed AHCs for all stricken aircraft, resulting in 47 rolls of 35mm microfilm covering the 1950-1962 time period. The next year the Navy microfilmed the AHCs up through 1949 for all aircraft, resulting in 62 rolls of 35mm microfilm. With the transition to Fiscal Year activity reports the Navy microfilmed the AHCs for all aircraft stricken since the 1963 filming and for all aircraft active as of 1965, resulting in two sets of 16mm microfilm covering the period 1950-1965, one for the stricken aircraft (6 rolls) and one for active aircraft (13 rolls). From then on the activity records for each fiscal year were microfilmed on either 35mm or 16mm microfilm. In each case, loose AHCs were microfilmed in BuNo. order and computer-generated listings (either printout or direct to microfilm) were sorted in BuNo. order. The following table summarizes the film sets and microfilm types:

From 1913 on it recorded information about individual aircraft added to the inventory from its being accepted until stricken from the list. Such records have had a number of official names --Aircraft Record, Aircraft History Card, etc --but are most commonly called "Aircraft History Cards." Originally the records were compiled by hand, but in 1950 the Navy converted its record-keeping system entirely to electronic methods.

Aircraft History Cards do not record the complete history and activity of an individual aircraft. They do not include information about missions or crews, nor do they record exact locations or manners of loss. Rather, they serve as a compilation of the locations and assigned units of the aircraft at set inventory times or as a record of transfers between locations or units. The type of information included and its presentation changes over time and falls into two main groups:

through December 1949

This period actually covers several different styles of record cards, but all are hand-written. The cards themselves are all preprinted and have various Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer) form numbers and titles. The earliest, the "Aircraft Record," followed the aircraft through production to acceptance, then listed shipment information and trouble reports until the aircraft was stricken from the Navy list. Later, unnamed, forms continued this presentation until c.1939 when the Aircraft History Card (AHC) began to come into use (the transition is not uniform). The AHC recorded the location and unit assignment of the aircraft at the end-of-month inventory period and recorded dates of transfer in and out of the unit. Unfortunately, no inventory information was recorded for most aircraft for the late-1943 through mid-1944 period. Lend-lease aircraft purchased under Navy contract for delivery to allied powers were not recorded unless and until they returned to U.S. Navy custody. The AHC remained the standard record form until the end of 1949.

January 1950 and October 1986

Beginning in 1950, the Navy changed the format of the AHC and began to utilize electronic equipment to maintain its inventory records. From 1950 on AHCs were machine printed and recorded each transfer or change of status. Each such entry included location and unit assignment as before, but now also included aircraft status, flying time, number of landings, and age. In Fiscal Year 1966 1 (1 July 1965 to 30 June 1966) the Navy changed to a smaller (punch card sized) card listing only the activity for one aircraft during that fiscal year only. Beginning in FY1967, instead of printing the activity information on separate cards for each aircraft, the Navy printed out a single listing for all aircraft showing all the activity during the Fiscal Year, sorted by aircraft BuAer Number (BuNo.) and date. The printouts were in the same format as the machine-printed AHCs, but only contained the activity for a single year. In the mid 1980s the Navy did away with printouts entirely and printed the Fiscal Year activity directly to microfilm.

October 1986 and subsequent

According to the Naval Historical Center, the inventory records after the beginning of Fiscal Year 1987 (1 October 1986) are apparently available only in the Navy's on-line systems. As of this writing no hard-copy versions of these records are available.

The Gallery of Flight Testing, which opened in 1976, was designed to exhibit aircraft design concepts and their significance in the story of flight. The exhibit illustrated problems of flight and how many of those problems have been solved.

This collection consists of the project books for aircraft tested by the Experimental Division in the early 1920s. Most project books contain photstats of the specifications and contracts for these aircraft as well as Air Service inspection and test reports. In 1917 the United States Army Air Service established an aviation engineering section at McCook Field in Dayton, OH. In 1927 the Engineering Division, as it was then known, moved to nearby Wilbur Wright Field and there remained as the Air Force Material Division (AFMD) and Air Material Command (AMC) until Wright Field combined with Patterson Field to become Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1948. The Engineering Division was in charge of research and development for the Army Air Services and was a clearinghouse for the Army Air Services on aviation development worldwide.

This accession consists of records documenting the World War 2 National Capital Flyover, an event marking the 70th anniversary of V-E (Victory in Europe) Day on May 8, 2015. To honor the 16 million who served in the United States (U. S.) armed forces during World War 2 and to spotlight the essential role that aircraft played in U. S. victory, the General Aviation Manufacturers' Association led an effort to bring one of the largest privately owned collections of World War 2 airplanes ever assembled (known as the "Arsenal of Democracy") to fly over the National Mall in Washington, District of Columbia, in fourteen formations. The "Smithsonian" and "Air and Space" magazines jointly served as the media sponsor for the event.

This accession includes the section of the "Air and Space" magazine website created to publicize the event as it existed on May 5, 2015. It includes information about viewing the event and about the airplanes themselves as well as a plane-spotting guide and links to articles about the event and about World War 2 in general found elsewhere on the website (this accession also includes many of those articles).

In addition, this accession includes a sample of social media content related to the event. Over 14,000 Tweets using the hashtag "#WW2Flyover" were captured from the microblogging service Twitter during the period of April 28 through May 11, 2015. This collection consists of approximately 0.73 cubic feet of material relating to Max Trager's service with the 462nd Bombardment Group, 768th Bombardment Squadron in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater during World War II including photographic material, maps, and military records. The photographs show various aircraft, including a large amount of nose art; photographs of Max Trager as well as other personnel from his unit; scenes of life on base; and scenes from the various countries where they were stationed. The photographs are largely black and white and are of various sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. There is also one folder of color prints and one folder of color slides (some of which are metal mounted). There are also a small amount of negatives in the collection. Aircraft shown in the photographs include the Boeing B-29 Superfortress; North American B-25C Mitchell; Consolidated B-24 Liberator; North American P-51C Mustang; Republic P-47D (F-47D) Thunderbolt; Lockheed P-38L Lightning; and the Curtiss P-40N Warhawk. Named aircraft shown in the photographs include Boeing B-29 Superfortresses Mis-Chief-Mak-Er; Flak Magnet; Thunder Bird; Globe Girdle Myrtle; War Admiral; Hoodlum-House II; Celestial Princess; Musn' Touch It; The Shrike; Phony Express; Memphis Maid; Slave Girl; Global Glamour; Sweet Thing; Celestial Queen; Lady Marge; Fire Belle; Patience Reward; Snuffy; Raidin Maiden II; Sleepy Time Gal; High and Mighty; Mysterious Mistress; Ready Betty; Haulinas; Hellon Wings; Airborn; The Cajun Queen; Draggin' Lady; Lucky Lady; Our Gal; Dream Girl; Winnie II; Nightmare; King Size; Trouble-maker; and Jack's Hack; as well as a Curtiss P-40N Warhawk painted with the skull nose art of the 80th Fighter Group, known as the "Burma Banshees." Numerous unit insignia are also visible. The collection also contains a "Serviceman's Map of the United States" published by Fred Harvey which includes a key to insignia in various branches of service; some of Trager's military records (some are photocopies); a "Taj Mahal Atlas" which Trager marked with routes and notes on various missions; and a "462nd Bombardment Group Hellbird Handbook" featuring information on the various squadrons and some photos from the War. There are also two oversized maps in the collection. One is a U.S. Army Air Forces, Army Map Service Aeronautical Chart showing the Hooghly River region of India with some handwritten notes on it. This map measures approximately 28.75 by 22 inches and dates to circa 1943. The second is a world map, published by the "Geographia" Map Company and measuring approximately 41 by 27 inches, on which Max Trager has marked his travels during his military service.
Biographical / Historical:
Max Trager (1921-2004) was an airplane and engine mechanic who served with the 462nd Bombardment Group, 768th Bombardment Squadron in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater during World War II. Trager entered active service in September 1942. Trager was initially assigned to the aviation repair depot at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas where he worked on Curtiss-Wright engines. Trager then went to Piardoba Airfield, India by way of North Africa. Trager later served as crew chief for Boeing B-29 Superfortress aircraft flying out of Kiunglai Airfield, China. Trager's final duty station was at West Field, Tinian, Marianas Island before he separated from the military as a sergeant in November 1945.

This collection consists of 95 black and white snapshots taken by Dusch. The photographs include the following: aircraft, including Boeing B-17s and B-29s, Fairchild C-119s, and Douglas C-47s; fellow soldiers; nose art; signage, and general views of mostly stateside air bases; models of aircraft; and shots of tourist locations pre-World War II.
Biographical / Historical:
James R. Dusch (1927-1995) was stationed in postwar Japan and then at Johnson Air Force Base during the early 1950s. During the 1960s Dusch was a master sergeant with the 331st Fighter Interceptor Squadron

This collection consists of forty-three 8 x 10 inch black and white copy photographs, predominantly of 6th ARU(F) personnel, facilities (including the ship) and aircraft in the Philippines and Japan from 1945 through very early 1946; notable is a view of the 6th ARU(F) Sikorsky R-6 Quick Match with personal art. Also included are close-up views of nose art on several aircraft from other USAAF units, including Consolidated B-24 Liberators Joy Rider, Glamouras', Tarfu, Long Island Belle and Umbriago; Consolidated F-7 Photo Fanny; Lockheed P-38 Well, Bust Ma' Britches!; and an unnamed Northop P-61 Black Widow. Several images are of 7th Air Service Area Command (7th ASAC) facilites at Haneda Air Base, Japan. Three images show captured Japanese aircraft (a Kawanishi H6K5 Mavis, an Aichi E16A1 Paul, and a Mitsubishi G4M3 Betty) awaiting preparation for shipment by the 7the ASAC. Accompanying textual material includes photocopies of documents, including a short history of the formation of the U. S. Army Air Forces Helicopter School (1944-1945) with a personnel list, an accident survey report regarding the loss of Sikorsky R-4B s/n 43-46584, a vessel status card for the USS Brig. Gen. Alfred J. Lyon, and several circa 1990s newspaper clippings relating to the history of the 5th ARU(F) based onboard the USS Brig. Gen. Clinton W. Russell. Also included are photocopies of the photographs with added notes from 6th ARU(F) veterans.
Biographical / Historical:
The US Army Air Forces 6th Aircraft Repair Unit, Floating, based on the US Army aircraft repair ship USS Brig. Gen. Alfred J. Lyon, utilized Sikorsky R-4 and R-6 helicopters during the end of World War II. The 6th ARU(F) was one of six ARU(F) helicopter units which operated in the Pacific Theatre under the code name "Ivory Soap." The 6th ARU(F) was based in the Philippines circa early 1945, with the USS Brig. Gen. Alfred J. Lyon docked at Yokohama, Japan, later that year, following the Japanese surrender.
