G. A. Keyes Oyster Saloon (front exterior with sign, plus additional sign: "Oysters / hot coffee / cold meats / &c"), on unidentified street, by an unidentified photographer. In front of the "saloon" a young African American boy (or man) sits on a cart hitched to a bull, who is also resting. Other figures nearby include several wearing top hats, and two other African American figures are sitting on a doorstep. Orange mount, pink on verso. Pencil on verso: "Polatka Express."

Calendar (partial) containing color cartoons and advertising for Fleischmann's yeast. The pages are tied together with string through two holes at the top of each card, and some have torn loose. The missing calendar pages may be found elsewhere in the box.

October page: image depicts a cook at a cast iron stove speaking with lady of the house-- "Mistress: Well cook, as long as buckwheat flour is in season we must have buckwheat cakes for breakfast. What yeast will you use? Cook: Fleischmann's yeast ma'am is my choice. I can make anything in de bakin line wif it. It's a right smart yeast."

Two small portrait busts of young African American men or boys. One wears a jacket and tie. The other tintype, in somewhat worse condition, is bent and abraded and has a hole in the top, and shows a young man wearing a broad-brimmed hat, vest, and jacket, no tie.

No indication of photographer's identity.
Arrangement:
Collection is arranged into one series.
Biographical / Historical:
Nothing is known about the subjects of the photographs, their origin, or circumstances. Neither photograph is captioned, and the photographer is unidentified.
Provenance:
Purchased by Richard Ahlborn, February 1990 from a dealer in Lyons, Colorado, who believed the tintypes were taken in Colorado. Gift of Mr. Ahlborn to the Archives Center.
