This collection consists of Mahlon Philip Bryan's cadet logbook from the 27th Aero Squadron, 1917-1918; Early Birds membership card; F.A.I. Aero Club of America Aviator's Certificate number 580; 1959-1960 membership card for the American Field Service; handwritten history of the 27th Aero Squadron; Early Birds membership rosters; several copies of Early Bird publication Chirp; correspondence and photographs.
Biographical / Historical:
Mahlon Philip "Phil" Bryan (8/9/1895-196?) attended the Harvard Summer Aviation School in 1916 and served in France with the American Field Service (AFS) before the American entry into World War I.

Summary:
This collection consists of two diaries kept by Lieutenant Zenos Ramsey Miller (1895-1922) as a pilot in the 27th Aero Squadron of the US Air Service during World War I, and, following his capture, as a prisoner of war of in Germany.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of two items: a diary that Miller entitled "Autograph Book and Diary of Zenos R. Miller: Containing the Names of my fellow Gefangeneners [sic] and a Brief Record of Events." The diary contains entries by 124 of Miller's fellow prisoners in which they write their name, address, and circumstances of capture. There are also descriptions, drawings, photographs, and mementos of prison camp life and the American, British, French and Russian prisoners of war held there. The second item is a diary entitled, "Daily Reminder 1918," which covers the time period January 1 to June 25, 1918, and describes Miller's training, aviation activities, and camp life. The entries were entered by Miller before he was shot down and became a prisoner of war. A memorial volume, "In Memory of Zenos Ramsey Miller" by William Alfred Eddy was included with the collection, and is now held by the National Air and Space Museum Library.
Biographical / Historical:
Zenos R. Miller was a pilot with the 27th Aero Squadron of the United States Air Service during World War I. Miller was credited with shooting down four German aircraft before he was shot down on July 16, 1918. He was held as a prisoner of war at Landshut and Villingen before he was freed by the Armistice in November of 1918. Miller returned to the United States and was studying at Harvard Medical School when he decided to undertake a transcontinental flight during the summer of 1922. He died during the first leg of the trip when his aircraft crashed.

Scope and Contents:
This scrapbook was compiled by Nathan Blumberg who served with the 27th Aero Squadron. It contains photographs of members of the squadron, pictures of the graves of some of the pilots killed in action, pictures of planes (including Spad XIII, Donrad AR.2, Nieuport 28, and De Havilland DH-4) used in World War I and of France during the war. It also includes poems, newspaper articles on the squadron and on Lt. Luke and memorabilia of the squadron's reunions in 1966 and 1973. There are also newspaper clippings about Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker.
Biographical / Historical:
The 27th Aero Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group, was chartered on 23 June 1917 and served in France during World War I. After training, the squadron embarked for Europe on 25 January 1918 and served at Toul, France. Among those serving in the 27th Aero Squadron was Lt. Frank Luke, Jr., who was killed in action and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
