The Smithsonian Institution Archives began its Oral History Program in 1973. The purpose of the program is to supplement the written documentation of the Archives' record and manuscript collections with an Oral History Collection, focusing on the history of the Institution, research by its scholars, and contributions of its staff. Program staff conduct interviews with current and retired Smithsonian staff and others who have made significant contributions to the Institution. There are also interviews conducted by researchers or students on topics related to the history of the Smithsonian or the holdings of the Smithsonian Institution Archives.

Moss was interviewed for the Smithsonian Institution Archives Oral History Collection because of his service as director of Smithsonian Institution Archives.
Descriptive Entry:
This collection consists of an audiotaped interview of Moss by University of Maryland student Keith Winsell conducted in 1986, and a 1993 videotaped interview of Moss by Marc Pachter, Acting Assistant Secretary for External Affairs, that covers his early life and education; naval career; graduate studies; work at the National Security Agency; career at the Kennedy Library and the Smithsonian Institution Archives, including interest in history at the Smithsonian, the space problem at the Archives, formation of CIED, and future directions for the Institution; oral history and archival practices; and interest in China and Chinese archives. The collection consists of 1.0 hour of audiotape recording and 2.0 hours of videotape recording. No transcript is available.
Historical Note:
William W. Moss III (1935-2007) received his B.A. from Haverford College in 1957. Moss began his federal service in the United States Navy in 1958. During nearly five years of active duty, he spent a year studying Chinese at the Army Language School in Monterey, California. From 1963 to 1964, he undertook graduate work in Chinese and public law and government at Columbia University, and was awarded the M.A. in 1965. He worked as an Intelligence Research Analyst in foreign language at the National Security Agency from 1964 through 1969. In 1969, he left to accept a position at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, Massachusetts, as an Oral History Interviewer, and in 1970, became Chief of the Oral History Program. Moss became Senior Archivist for national security and foreign affairs materials at the Library in 1972 and Chief Archivist in 1975. In 1983, Moss came to the Smithsonian as Archivist of the Institution and Director of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. During his ten years at the Archives, he participated in the establishment of the Council of Information and Education Directors (CIED) and served as its head for two years. He also presided over the formation of the Smithsonian Institution Archives and Special Collections Council and served as chairman for three years. Moss retired in 1993 to accept a position teaching in the International Programs Office at the Foreign Affairs University in Beijing, China, and was named the first Archivist Emeritus.

Introduction:
The Smithsonian Institution Archives began its Oral History Program in 1973. S. Dillon Ripley was interviewed for the Oral History Collection because of his role as an ornithologist and as the eighth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1964 to 1984.
Descriptive Entry:
Ripley was interviewed by Pamela M. Henson from 1977 to 1993 at his offices at the Smithsonian and at his home in Litchfield, Connecticut. These interviews cover his youth, early interests in natural history, education, career on the faculty at Yale, field work and expeditions, tenure as Secretary of the Smithsonian, involvement in international conservation efforts, and reminiscences of individuals, including Sálim Ali, August Heckscher, Joseph H. Hirshhorn, G. Evelyn Hutchinson, and Ralph Rinzler. The collection consists of 38.5 hours of audiotape recording and circa 831 pages of transcript.
Historical Note:
S. Dillon Ripley (1913-2001), ornithologist and eighth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, developed an interest in natural history in his youth. He received the B.A. from Harvard University in 1936 and the Ph.D. from Yale University in 1943. He served briefly as a curator of birds at the National Museum of Natural History before joining the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. From 1946 to 1963, he was on the faculty of Yale University and served as Director of their Peabody Museum from 1959 to 1963. In 1964, he was appointed Secretary of the Smithsonian. During his twenty year tenure as Secretary, he oversaw the development of the Anacostia Museum, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, Festival of American Folklife, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of African Art, Renwick Gallery, Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Associates, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and Smithsonian magazine. Ripley was also involved in numerous conservation organizations, including the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands, International Council for Bird Preservation, and International Union for the Conservation of Nature. His interests in international affairs also led him to play a role in the foundation of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of production elements and records, maintained by Sandra Wentworth Bradley, created for "Smithsonian World," an educational television series that explored people, ideas, and events that shape world culture, blending art, science, history, and the humanities to create an exciting harmony among disciplines. The production was narrated by historian David G. McCullough and co-produced by WETA-TV for broadcast on the Public Broadcasting Service. The series consisted of 6 seasons, each with 5-7 episodes. Each episode ran approximately 1 hour. Season 1 (1984-1985) episodes include "Time and Light;" "Crossing the Distance;" "Speaking Without Words;" "Designs for Living;" "Filling in the Blanks;" "The Last Flower;" and "Desk in the Jungle." Season 2 (1985-1986) episodes include "Heroes and the Test of Time;" "A Usable Past;" "Where None Has Gone Before;" "On the Shoulders of Giants;" and "American Pie." Season 3 (1986-1987) episodes include "The Wyeths: A Father and His Family;" "Voices of Latin America;" "The Elephant on the Hill;" "The Promise of the Land;" and "Islam." Season 4 (1988-1989) episodes include "The Living Smithsonian;" "American Dream at Groton;" "The Way We Wear;" "Web of Life;" and "The Vever Affair." Season 5 (1990) episodes include "Zoo;" "A Moveable Feast;" "Tales of the Human Dawn;" Nigerian Art - Kindred Spirits;" and "The Quantum Universe." Season 6 (1991) episodes include "Gender: The Enduring Paradox;" "Selling the Dream;" "From Information to Wisdom;" "A Certain Age;" and "Doors of Perception." This accession also includes records documenting episodes that were never completed and "Smithsonian Treasures," one and two hour versions of "Smithsonian World" that were created for commercial television.

Production records include budget reports, copyright records, intellectual property records, interview transcripts, editing logs, notebooks, scripts, production bibles, credits information, research files, correspondence, promotional materials, clippings, and related materials. Production elements include narration, dialogue, music, and related materials, for each episode, on 16 mm and, for promos, on videotape. This accession also includes final productions on a variety of videotape formats.

Philip K. Lundeberg was interviewed for the Oral History Collection to document his career as Curator of Naval History at the National Museum of American History and because of his seminal role in the development of museum security practices at the Smithsonian.
Descriptive Entry:
Lundeberg was interviewed in 2000 and 2002 by Smithsonian Institution Archives Historian Pamela M. Henson. The interviews discuss his childhood and education, service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, years teaching at St. Olaf's College and the U.S. Naval Academy, and career at the Smithsonian as a curator in the Division of Naval History, including exhibits, collections acquisitions, research and publications, reminiscences of colleagues, and work on the first museum security committee at the Smithsonian. The collection consists of 6.0 hours of audiotape recording and 170 pages of transcript.
Historical Note:
Philip Karl Boraas Lundeberg (1923- ) was Curator of Naval History at the National Museum of American History. Lundeberg was born on 14 June 1923, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up in Durham, North Carolina, where his father was a professor at Duke University. He received the B.A. from Duke University in 1994, majoring in history. He served in the U.S. Navy for the remainder of World War II, surviving the sinking of the U.S.S. Frederick Davis in 1945. He pursued graduate studies at Duke University, receiving the M.A. in 1946, and Harvard University, receiving the Ph.D. in 1954. From 1951 to 1953, he worked for the Office of Naval History under Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison, preparing a history of the Battle of the Atlantic. Lundeberg then taught at St. Olaf's College from 1953 to 1955 and the U.S. Naval Academy from 1955 to 1959.

In 1959, he joined the staff of the Division of Naval History at the National Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History (NMAH). From 1962 to 1984, Lundeberg was Curator of Naval History. In 1984, when the Divisions of Naval and Military History were merged to form the Division of Armed Forces History, he was named Curator of Armed Forces History. Following his retirement in 1986, he was named Curator Emeritus of Armed Forces History in 1987. During his career at the NMAH, Lundeberg oversaw the acquisition of the gunboat Philadelphia and worked on exhibits including Magnificent Voyagers. During the 1970s, he became involved in the first committee to develop policies for museum security at the Smithsonian and at the International Council of Museums, working with Robert G. Tillotson.
