Included are biographical documents; correspondence with dealers, museums and others; numerous sketches; sketchbooks; working and presentation drawings; monoprints; photographs of Von Schlegell, his family, his father William Von Schlegell, and his work; albums of slides; files on Yale University and a Pace gallery exhibition, 1983; studio plans; bills for supplies; studies for a commission proposal; site plans; blueprints; exhibition material; clippings; writings by Von Schlegell and others; and legal and financial material;
a diary kept by Von Schlegell's mother, Alice, 1914; and material relating to his father, William Von Schlegell, including a sound recording with transcript, 1991, of a talk about his work, biographical data, portfolio of sketches, a drawing of him, photographs of his work, a typescript of "Theories of Color," a priced checklist and catalog for a posthumous exhibition, letters to David about his father's work, and printed material.

Interview of David Von Schlegell, conducted by Dorothy Gees Seckler for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, in New York on June 5, 1967.
Von Schlegell speaks of growing up in St. Louis; his father, who was also a painter; training in Ogunquit, ME and with the Art Students League in New York; entering World War II as an Air Force pilot; the decision to take up sculpture; his artistic preferences and influences; his use of materials and methods of working; his impressions of Minimalism; and comparisons between sculpture and architecture. He also recalls David Smith, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Mark di Suvero, Robert Morris, and others.

Donated 2006 by Kenny Schneider. While living in New York City in the 1960s, Schneider would walk around various neighborhoods using his camera to "sketch", resulting in motion picture films.
