Pitman thanks Carr for the photos of mountain gorilla and asks questions about how/where they were obtained. He assumes the date was 1921. Sending on export permit. Congratulates Carr on "a good shoot" in the west Nile. "That District appears to be the 'Mecca' of all elephant hunters these days and it won't be long before all good or reasonably good bulls are shot out."

Scope and Contents note:
Journal kept by Major A.W. Quilter of Nairobi, Kenya, describing his travels on safari and his game-hunting activities in East Africa. Quilter describes events that happened to him and other members of his party on safari, gives details on the animals he had shot (for instance, hippopotamus, elephants, lions, bongos, and impalas), and mentions some of the people he met on his travels, including Kermit Roosevelt.
General note:
Identification of author based on printed document completed by hand, laid in volume 1 (1 sheet ([1] page), 11 x 13 cm.): East Africa Protectorate. Gun tax receipt for the year 1909 ... no. 13940, issued to Major A.W. Quilter of Nairobi, 29 Oct. 1909, signed by district commissioner R. Skene, district of Mombasa.

Selous says he will send photos to be placed alongside those of his old friends Phil [tentatively identified as G.A. "Elephant" Phillips] and Collison. "You can't think how I miss all my old friends of early days in Matabeleland --old Phil perhaps more than anyone else. It seems very strange that although I am not yet 47, I should have outlived almost every one who was either trading or hunting north of the Limpopo five and twenty years ago." Says he is including photos which he thinks make him look younger.

Selous requests that an annual account for sales of A hunter's wanderings be sent to him. He feels they have been slack in rendering him accounts and paying his dues in the past and would like an account for "even if only one copy should be sold something would be due to me." A member of Bentley's staff has added a pencilled note: "He was abroad with no address."
