This accession consists of records documenting the research and activities of the Office of Public Affairs, particularly as they relate to education. Materials include
correspondence, memoranda, publications, serials, photographs, transparencies, posters, brochures, planning documents, activity books, reports, curriculum guides, special
event files, notes, animal information sheets, floor plans, recordings, and press releases.
This accession consists of videotapes collected and maintained by the Conservation and Research Center, Office of Education. Some videotapes document electronic field
trips and other educational programs, primarily with Fairfax County Public Schools. Footage of some of those programs was also used in television programs. Many of these programs
feature the NOAHS (New Opportunities in Animal Health Sciences) Center. Some videotapes in this accession were used as part of an educational program and may not have been
produced by the National Zoological Park. In addition, this accession includes videotapes of television segments about the Conservation and Research Center or in which National
Zoological Park veterinarians and zoologists were featured. Materials consist of VHS videotapes.
This accession consists of the website of the National Zoological Park, including the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center,
and the Friends of the National Zoo, as it existed on July 16, 2013. It includes information about exhibits, animals, conservation projects, membership, events, publications,

This accession consists of audiovisual materials created during the production of "Reptiles and Amphibians." This 20 minute film was produced in 1982 to prepare third
through sixth graders for their visit to the National Zoological Park. Materials include source materials and titles on 16 mm film.

This accession consists of a reference set of "National Zoo News," a semiannual newspaper for teachers. The newspaper includes articles about animals, research, programs,
and events. Some articles are written by teachers about class trips to the National Zoological Park. Also included is information about special events, educational programs,
curricula, resources for teachers, and films available for borrowing. Materials include serial publications.

This accession consists of photographs collected by the Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) for use or possible use in "Zoogoer" and other FONZ publications. The photographs

publications, and children's activities. Also documented are the history of the National Zoological Park as researched by Sybil E. Hamlet and the proposed white-tailed deer
hunt at the Conservation and Research Center that sparked an investigation by the United States Congress. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings,
copies of Congressional documents, draft public statements, development statistics, the 2001 crisis communication plan, staff publications lists, press releases, conceptual
plans for activity areas, and notes and diaries related to historical research.

This accession consists of records documenting the activities of the National Zoological Park (NZP), Office of Public Affairs, especially those activities related to
publicity, outreach, and education. Materials include educational activities, biographical files, clippings, press releases, publications, memoranda, correspondence, brochures,
pamphlets, newsletters, reports, event photographs, transparencies of animals, lecture recordings, training videotapes, videotapes of news segments, audiotapes of interviews,
films and videotapes created by National Zoological Park staff, and related materials.
This accession consists of audiovisual materials created during the production of "Enormous Egg;" "National Zoo: Think Tank;" "As They Really Are;" "Big Cats and How
They Came to Be;" "Bengal Tiger;" "Changes: The Story of Evolution and Speciation;" and "First Look at Kumari." "Enormous Egg" is a story for children about a pet dinosaur.
The production is 1 hour long and aired on National Broadcasting Corporation, Inc. in 1967. "National Zoo: Think Tank" consists of videos played on multiple screens in the
Think Tank exhibition at the National Zoological Park (NZP). The original videos were produced in 1995. A second version of the exhibition videos was created in 2001. Updates
may have also been made in 1998. "As They Really Are" accompanied the NZP exhibition, "Human Attitudes Toward Animals." The 5 minute videotape was produced in 1991. "Big Cats
and How They Came to Be" is the story of the evolution of the genus panthera. It was animated by Film Polski for NZP. Produced in 1976, the film is 10 minutes long. It won
the Council on International Nontheatrical Events (CINE) Golden Eagle in 1976 and was shown at the Sixth International Film Festival of India.
"Bengal Tiger" is a general description of the endangered animal's lifestyle. The 9 minute film was produced in 1976 and accompanied a National Museum of Natural History
exhibition. It won a CINE Golden Eagle in 1977 and received a first prize Audio Visual Award from the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums. "Changes: The
Story of Evolution and Speciation" was used by the NZP, Office of Education to teach speciation. The 7 minute film was animated by Film Polski. "First Look at Kumari" is a
15 minute souvenir video about Kumari, NZP's Asian Elephant, and the Asian Elephant Species Survival Plan. Kumari was born in December 1993 and the video was likely produced
in 1994. This accession also includes videos about NZP in general, the Friends of the National Zoo, and NZP's pandas. Materials include submasters, edited masters, masters,
dubbing masters, film transfers, and viewing copies on a variety of videotape formats as well as release prints on 16 mm film.

This accession consists of the website of the National Zoological Park, including the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center,
and the Friends of the National Zoo, as it existed on July 27, 2016, and again on September 8, 2016, shortly after it was redesigned. Both versions of the website include
information about exhibits, animals, conservation projects, membership, events, educational programs, and visiting as well as image galleries and press releases. Due to technical
issues, some features, such as the live animal cams, do not function as expected. Materials are in electronic format.
