This accession consists of audiovisual materials created during the production of "Enormous Egg;" "National Zoo: Think Tank;" "As They Really Are;" "Big Cats and How They Came to Be;" "Bengal Tiger;" "Changes: The Story of Evolution and Speciation;" and "First Look at Kumari." "Enormous Egg" is a story for children about a pet dinosaur. The production is 1 hour long and aired on National Broadcasting Corporation, Inc. in 1967. "National Zoo: Think Tank" consists of videos played on multiple screens in the Think Tank exhibition at the National Zoological Park (NZP). The original videos were produced in 1995. A second version of the exhibition videos was created in 2001. Updates may have also been made in 1998. "As They Really Are" accompanied the NZP exhibition, "Human Attitudes Toward Animals." The 5 minute videotape was produced in 1991. "Big Cats and How They Came to Be" is the story of the evolution of the genus panthera. It was animated by Film Polski for NZP. Produced in 1976, the film is 10 minutes long. It won the Council on International Nontheatrical Events (CINE) Golden Eagle in 1976 and was shown at the Sixth International Film Festival of India.

"Bengal Tiger" is a general description of the endangered animal's lifestyle. The 9 minute film was produced in 1976 and accompanied a National Museum of Natural History exhibition. It won a CINE Golden Eagle in 1977 and received a first prize Audio Visual Award from the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums. "Changes: The Story of Evolution and Speciation" was used by the NZP, Office of Education to teach speciation. The 7 minute film was animated by Film Polski. "First Look at Kumari" is a 15 minute souvenir video about Kumari, NZP's Asian Elephant, and the Asian Elephant Species Survival Plan. Kumari was born in December 1993 and the video was likely produced in 1994. This accession also includes videos about NZP in general, the Friends of the National Zoo, and NZP's pandas. Materials include submasters, edited masters, masters, dubbing masters, film transfers, and viewing copies on a variety of videotape formats as well as release prints on 16 mm film.

This accession consists of materials documenting the history of the Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) and its activities in support of the National Zoological Park (NZP) and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). As a nonprofit partner of NZP and SCBI, FONZ raises funds for mission support, manages a large volunteer force, and creates and conducts a wide variety of educational products and programs. Many of the materials in this accession document not just the history of FONZ, but the history of NZP and SCBI as well. Materials include images, clippings, brochures, maps, books, informational packages, educational activities, volunteer training materials, event invitations, meeting agendas, videotapes, development files for educational exhibits, patches, and related materials. This accession consists of videotapes collected and maintained by the Conservation and Research Center, Office of Education. Some videotapes document electronic field trips and other educational programs, primarily with Fairfax County Public Schools. Footage of some of those programs was also used in television programs. Many of these programs feature the NOAHS (New Opportunities in Animal Health Sciences) Center. Some videotapes in this accession were used as part of an educational program and may not have been produced by the National Zoological Park. In addition, this accession includes videotapes of television segments about the Conservation and Research Center or in which National Zoological Park veterinarians and zoologists were featured. The film is the story of the evolution of the genus panther and was animated by Film Polski for NZP. Produced in 1976, the film is 10 minutes long. Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records documenting the administration of the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program (GLTCP). Originally administered entirely by the National Zoological Park (NZP), Department of Zoological Research, the GLTCP focused on the conservation of the golden lion tamarin in its natural habitat and was responsible for the release of captive-born golden lion tamarins into the Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (Brazil). In 1992, overall administration of the program was transferred to the Brazilian non-governmental organization, Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado. The Department of Zoological Research continued to administer NZP's involvement in reintroduction, tracking, and conservation education. Topics documented in this accession include fund raising, budget, conservation training, studbook administration, policies, publicity, research publication, evaluation of calling patterns, observation of released golden lion tamarins, reintroduction logistics, and involvement with international conservation organizations and committees.

Materials include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting materials, clippings, newsletters, observations, data evaluations, policies, procedures, permits, manuscripts, filming requests, presentations, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, posters, images, maps, audio recordings, notes, and related materials. Some materials were created while the unit was known as the Office of Animal Management (through 1979), the Office of Animal Programs (1979-1984), or the Department of Zoological Research and Education (1984-1985).

This collection consists of motion pictures taken by veterinarians, keepers, directors, and other staff at the National Zoological Park (NZP) for research and documentation purposes. These motion pictures, along with footage shot for television news and other programs, were kept by the Office of Education as part of their mission to disseminate information to the public.

The motion pictures depict the medical treatment, transport, feeding, and behavior of animals at NZP and other zoological parks; the activities of keepers and other zoo personnel; animal collecting expeditions and visits to foreign zoos by Lucile Q. Mann and William M. Mann; and animal-related events at NZP. Also included is a reel-to-reel videotape on giant panda social and reproductive development, and a microfilmed report concerning the expansion of NZP. Films marked with an asterisk have been transferred to videotape and are available for viewing by researchers
Restrictions:
Only selected motion pictures were copied to videotape for preservation purposes and are available for viewing by researchers.
