Weaver; professional activity files documenting Montgomery's career as a consultant, curator, member, and volunteer for a myriad of organizations including the American Association for State and Local History, National Conference of Artists, and the Oakland Museum; and research files and notes on African and African American arts and history, Black media, Black photographers, the museum profession, and the artists Betye Saar, Lois Mailou Jones, Nike Davies-Okundaye, Romare Bearden, Ruth Waddy, Sam Gilliam, and Sargent Johnson. Biographical / Historical:
Evangeline "EJ" Montgomery (1930- ) is an African American artist, curator, and arts administrator in California and Washington, D.C.

Montgomery was born in New York and moved to Harlem in New York City after the divorce of her parents, Oliver and Carmelite Thompson. Upon graduating from Seward Park High School in 1951, Montgomery worked painting faces on dolls and statues. In 1955, she married Ulysses "Jim" Montgomery and moved to Los Angeles. In California she began working for jewelry designer Thomas Usher while attending Los Angeles City College. She continued her education at California College of the Arts (California College of Arts and Crafts) where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1969. During the late 1960s, Montgomery began curating exhibitions. From 1971 to 1976, she was curator for Rainbow Sign Gallery in Berkeley. Other roles Montgomery held were as the national exhibits workshop coordinator at the American Association for State and Local History and as program development consultant at the African American Museums Association. From 1976 to 1979, she was art commissioner for the city of San Francisco.

Montgomery moved to Washington, D.C. in 1980 to serve as the community affairs director for Howard University's WHMM-TV station. She then began working for the United States Information Agency (USIA) as a program officer in their Arts America program in the early 1980s. In her role, she worked to promote cross-cultural exchanges through art, specializing in American exhibitions touring abroad. Montgomery retired from the USIA in 2008.

As an artist, Montgomery gained recognition for her work in printmaking and metalworking. She was the recipient of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities fellowship in 2012 and an Excellence in the Arts Award from the Brandywine Print Workshop in 2004. Due to her diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in the 1990s, Montgomery had to stop working with metal but continued her printmaking work.

The Evangeline J. Montgomery papers were donated in 2019 by Evangeline J. Montgomery, as part of the Archives' African American Collecting Initiative funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.

Summary:
The papers of Vera Berdich measure 3 linear feet and date from circa 1912-1990, with the bulk from 1947-1989. The papers document Berdich's career through biographical material; correspondence with friends, family, artists, universities, and galleries; writings which include sabattical notes and statements on printmaking; exhibition and professional files; financial records; printed materials, artwork; photographs and slides.
Scope and Contents:
The papers of Vera Berdich measure 3 linear feet and date from circa 1912-1990, with the bulk from 1947-1989. The papers document Berdich's career as a printmaker and educator through biographical material such as resumes; personal correspondence consisting of letters, some of which are illustrated, from friends, colleagues, and family, including Barbara Aubin, Kathleen Blackshear, Whitney Halstead, Thomas Kapsalis, Kathryn Kucera, Denis Loy, Ethel Spears, Lynn Webster and Berdich's sisters and cousins; professional correspondence from galleries and museums including the Art Insitute of Chigago, the George Binet Gallery (N.Y.C.), the Yamada Gallery (Japan), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Illinois Arts Council. Writings include notes from her sabbatical in San Francisco and on various pieces of her artwork for an unnamed book project. Other writings by Berdich include statements on the printmaking techniques photo etching, clichés verres, and gum printing and a syllabus for an etching class. Writings by others include a transcript of a radio review of one of Berdich's exhibitions. Also found are exhibition files, professional files that document Berdich's involvement at different art institutions and organizations such the Art Institute of Chicago and it's affiliated college and personal business records. The papers also include printed material such as exhibition catalogs and newsclippings related to Berdich's exhibitions as well as select galleries, exhibitions and topics of interest such as women in the arts; four sketchbooks; and photographs of Berdich, her friends, family, other artists and works of art. A majority of the photographs are annotated on the back. Additionally, the series contains slides of Verdich's artwork over the years.

Biographical / Historical:
Vera Berdich (1915–2003) was a printmaker and educator from Chicago, Illinois. Growing up, Berdich and her family moved frequently, often settling down in areas with a close proximity to nature which would go on to inspire Berdich's work. Following grammar school Berdich went on to study at the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) graduating with a BA in 1946. A year later Berdich was hired by SAIC, where she founded the printmaking department and continued teaching until she retired in 1979. As a professor, Berdich formed important relationships with fellow professors Kathleen Blackshear and Whitney Halstead.

Over the course of her career Berdich exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States and in Europe, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1979 SAIC held a retrospective exhibition of her work. Her prints can be found in the collections of a number of institutions including the Library of Congress, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Biographical / Historical:
New Jersey painter, printmaker, and educator Riva Helfond (1910-2002) was known for her social realist studies of working people and their lives. She was employed by the the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project (WPA FAP) and taught printmaking at New York University and elsewhere.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Helfond studied at the School of Industrial Art and the Art Students League and worked for the FAP at the Harlem Community Art Center with Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden. She subsequently worked in the FAP's Graphic Arts Division with Louis Lozowick and Jacob Kainen, and in the silk- screen division where she was supervised by Anthony Velonis. In 1964 she taught printmaking at New York University and after 1980 was on the faculty of Union College in Cranford, New Jersey.

Helfond was married to sculptor Will Barrett and her circle of friends included Abstract Expressionist artists and critics such as Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Franz Kline, and Harold Rosenberg. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Brooklyn Museum, and many other institutions.

Helfond died in New Jersey in 2002.

Biographical material, correspondence and other files documenting Spero's personal and professional relationships, interviews and writings, records of Spero's many exhibitions and projects, files highlighting the major subjects that galvanized her, business records, printed and photographic material, and digital and video recordings, offer detailed insight into the career of one of the earliest feminist artists.

Biographical material includes biographical notes and curricula vitae, as well as several video recordings of documentaries about Spero by Patsy Scala and Irene Sosa which feature original footage of Spero at work. Correspondence is personal and professional, and includes letters from artists including Judy Chicago and Ana Mendieta, writers and curators such as Deborah Frizzell and Susanne Altmann, regarding Spero exhibition catalogs, monographs, and articles, and personal news from family members such as Spero's sons, and correspondence related to other aspects of Spero's career.

Interviews of Spero include transcripts, published interviews, and video recordings. Writings include many of Spero's statements about her work, as well as notes, published versions of articles written by Spero, and video recordings of talks and panel discussions she participated in.

Exhibition files for over 75 shows document the extent to which Spero's work has been widely exhibited in her lifetime with numerous solo exhibitions, including major retrospectives in London, Paris, Barcelona, and Madrid, and dozens of group exhibitions in which she participated over the course of her career.

Gallery and museum files supplement the exhibition files by further documenting Spero's dealings with numerous galleries and museums, including Galerie Lelong, which represents Spero's estate, Barbara Gross Galerie, the first gallery in Germany to represent Spero, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the National Gallery of Canada, and many others. The series also documents Spero's involvement with A.I.R. Gallery, the first independent women's art venue in the United States.

Professional files document other aspects of Spero's career including, but not limited to, awards she received, organizations she participated in or contributed to, publishing projects related to her work, and individual projects she executed such as an installation at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago and the Artemis, Acrobats, Divas & Dancers mosaic tiles she created for the Metropolitan Transit Authority for the 66th Street/Lincoln Center subway station. Also included here are files related to works of art such as Codex Artaud, and Notes in Time.

Subject files, contents of which were presumably used as source material for Spero, document subjects of interest to her, many of which were incorporated into her work and consists primarily of printed material. Broad subject categories include animal rights and conservation, feminism, war, and women. One set of folders documents "museum and political actions" undertaken by Spero and other activists during the 1960s-1970s to fight for equal representation of women in the arts and challenge the male-dominated hierarchy of the art world. Subject files include multiple news articles on torture, rape, and other atrocities committed particularly against women during wartime and by repressive and autocratic political regimes, and also include source material on the archetypal images of women that were fundamental to her interpretation of the female experience.

Printed material documents Spero's entire career from the late 1950s on. Announcements, exhibition catalogs, invitations, news clippings, and periodicals provide comprehensive coverage of her many exhibitions and other events. Printed material also documents the activities of a few other artists, primarily from the 2000s, and includes periodicals, primarily about art, and video recordings of documentaries about art and various other subjects.

Photographic material includes photographs of Nancy Spero from the 1940s on, photos of Spero with family and friends, and photographs of artwork including the heads of Spero's 2007 Maypole: Take No Prisoners which was the last major work completed before her death, originally realized for the Venice Biennale. Also found are a few installation shots and prints, slides, and digital images of Notes in Time at A.I.R. Gallery in 1979.

Biographical / Historical:
Nancy Spero (1926-2009) was a figurative painter, printmaker, and collage artist based in New York City whose work was executed primarily on paper from the 1960s on, and often incorporated text. Spero was among the first feminist artists and a political activist whose convictions were expressed relentlessly in her work. Using archetypal representations of women to examine the range of female experience, Spero centered "woman as protagonist" whilst simultaneously examining the suffering women have long been subjected to through structural inequality, the systematic abuses of repressive political regimes, and the atrocities of war.

Born in Cleveland, Nancy Spero lived in Chicago from the time she was a very young child until completing her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 1949) where she met her future husband, painter Leon Golub (1922-2004). Spero studied briefly in Paris and lived in New York City, returning to Chicago after her marriage in 1951. The couple and their two sons lived in Italy from 1956 to 1957. In 1959, after a few years in New York, the family moved to Paris where Spero developed an interest in existentialism and produced a series of black paintings. Spero and Golub returned to New York in 1964 with their three sons.

Nancy Spero was strongly affected by the war in Vietnam and the many social changes of the period. She became an activist and feminist, joined various organizations, and participated in a variety of demonstrations. Work such as the War series began to include political and sexual imagery, and Spero's work from here on was primarily executed on paper.

Spero was among the founding members of the women's cooperative A.I.R. Gallery established in 1972. In the 1970s archetypal representations of women in mythology, history, art, and literature became predominant in her work. Included in this vein are major series and installations, among them Torture of Women, Notes in Time on Women, The First Language, and her 66th Street/Lincoln Center subway station mosaic mural Artemis, Acrobats, Divas and Dancers.

Spero exhibited in the 1950 Salon des Independents and her first solo exhibition (in tandem with Leon Golub) was held at Indiana University in 1958. Thereafter, she showed sporadically until nearly 30 years later when her career flourished and she enjoyed international stature. Beginning in 1986, each year brought multiple solo exhibitions at galleries and museums in the United States and internationally. In addition, she continued to participate in group shows such as "Documenta" and the Venice Biennale. Her work is included in the permanent collections of museums throughout the world.

Awards and honors included the Skowhegan Medal for Works on Paper (1995), Hiroshima Art Prize shared with Leon Golub (1996), The Women's Caucus for Art award for Outstanding Achievement in Visual Arts (2003), and The Women's Caucus for Art Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement (2005). Spero was awarded honorary Doctorates of Fine Arts by The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1991) and Williams College (2001), and was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2006).

After several years of declining health, Nancy Spero died from heart failure in New York City, October 18, 2009.

The Pauline Winchester Inman papers measure 2.6 linear feet and date from circa 1800-1991. Biographical material contains a resume and biographical information for the publications Who's Who in American Art and Who's Who of American Women. Correspondence is with family members, artists, and friends. Writings include materials related to three projects for books and magazines Down East (1960), Artist's Proof (1963), and Antiques Guide (1972) as well as research material on Alexander Anderson for an article. Also included are annotated printed materials regarding exhibitions at the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

Subject files include artists' files containing exhibition information, printed, and other material as well as material related to the Society of Graphic Artists, the Print Collector, and the Woodcut Society. Printed material includes exhibition catalogs, clippings, prints of woodcuts, bookplates by Norman Kent, and Inman's 50th Reunion Book from Smith College. Artwork includes one sketchbook and prints of woodcuts created by Inman.

Biographical / Historical:
Pauline Winchester Inman (1904-1990) was a printmaker, author, and illustrator who worked mainly in Connecticut and Illinois.

Inman was born in Cook County, Chicago, Illinois and studied wood engraving with Allen Lewis. She worked on the books and readers for Down East (1960), Antiques Guide (1972), and Artist's Proof (1963).

Inman died in Newton, Fairfield County, Connecticut on January 16, 1990.

The papers of painter, muralist, and educator Amy Jones measures 3.5 linear feet and 2.90 GB and date from 1910s-2015, with the bulk of the records dating between 1930s-1992. The papers document Jones' career through biographical material, some recorded interviews and talks, correspondence, subject files, printed and digital material, photographs, artwork, and scrapbooks.

Biographical materials include awards and certificates, audio and video recordings from interviews and talks, resumes, inventories of works, membership cards, and writings. Correspondence pertains to Jones' dealings with galleries, museums, collectors, and also includes Christmas cards illustrated by Jones. Subject files include records of the sale and exhibition of her artwork; custodial history of her archive; project files; and some papers relating to her work as an art educator. Printed materials include newspaper and magazine clippings, exhibition announcements, catalogs, and posters, and publications that reproduced Jones' work. Photographs depict Jones as well as many of her watercolor landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Artwork consists of loose sketches and drawings as well two sketchbooks. Scrapbooks contain correspondence, photographs, notes and sketches, contracts, expenses, and printed material documenting three of Jones' mural paintings between 1937-1941 as part of the U.S. Treasury Relief Art Project.

Biographical / Historical:
Amy Jones (Frisbie) (1899-1992) was a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and art educator in New York.

After attending Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York, Jones studied under Xavier Gonzalez, Ben Wolf, and Anthony di Bona at the Pratt Institute. She left school early and moved to Buffalo, New York with her new husband, Blair Jones, and they had a daughter, Lucy. Jones continued to work on her art over the next few years designing Christmas cards and painting still lifes, portraits, and landscapes. Jones completed three murals between 1937-1941 for the U.S. Treasury Relief Art Project in Winsted, Connecticut; Painted Post, New York; and Scotia, New York. Jones established herself as a watercolorist in the U.S. and internationally by the 1940s. Her solo exhibitions include those held at Mount Holyoke College, Galleria Santo Stefano in Venice, Italy, a 10-year survey at New Britain Museum of American Art, and Katonah Gallery; and group exhibitions at National Gallery of Art, Corcoran Gallery, American Institute of Arts and Letters, and Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Her work may be found in the collections of the Ford Motor Company, Springfield College of Illinois, New Britain Museum of American Art, and the homes of many private collectors.

A portion of the collection was donated by Amy Jones in 1985, and the remainder was donated in 2015 by Lucy Jones Berk, Amy Jones' daughter.

An interview with Evangeline J. Montgomery conducted 2021 June 15-December 7, by Claude L. Elliott for the Archives of American Art, at Montgomery's home at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville, MD.
Biographical / Historical:
Evangeline "EJ" Montgomery (1930- ) is an African American artist, curator, and arts administrator in California and Washington, D.C. Montgomery has advocated for racial justice and public equity across media. She is especially known for her metallurgical works and abstract lithographs as well as her work with the US State Department to foster arts education domestically and abroad.
