Scope and Contents:
The papers of Japanes American artists Hisako Hibi and Matsusaburo "George" Hibi measure 3.3 linear feet and date from circa 1906-2000. These papers are mainly focused on Hisako Hibi's life and career, with some small elements related to Matsusaburo "George" Hibi. Included are biographical material consisting of immigration documents and interview transcripts; scrapbooks; photographs of family members; printed material including catalogs and newspaper clippings; personal and professional correspondence; records of works sold, loaned and donated; and few sketches. Also found is Matsusaburo's handwritten account of founding the art school at Topaz camp.
Biographical / Historical:
Hisako Hibi née Shimizu (1907-1991) was Japanese American an artist in Hayward and San Francisco, California. She was married to­ artist Matsusaburo "George" Hibi (1886-1947). Both artists were incarcerated at the Topaz relocation center in Utah during World War II.
Provenance:
Donated in 2022 by Ibuki Hibi Lee, Hisako and Matsusaburo "George" Hibi's daughter.

Administrative files include job descriptions, inventories of artwork, addresses, and contact lists; papers relating to foundries, photographers, framers, and printers; advertising records, property records, travel files, and one gallery guestbook. Correspondence files document the galleries' relationship with collectors, clients, art organizations, and consultants. The files include some sales records, agreements, printed material, and photos of artwork as well. Artists' files include biographical information, artist statements, correspondence, client lists, exhibition materials, loan and consignment records, and more. Among the artists featured extensively is Beth Van Hosen, William T. Wiley, Roy DeForest, Robert Arneson, Tom Holland, Robert Hudson, Marilyn Levine, and Joan Brown.

Exhibition and event files shed light on solo and group shows held at Fuller galleries, Art Unlimited and Hansen Gallery, and outside galleries, museums, and institutions; art fairs held in the U.S. and abroad, and auctions. Files related to film screenings, tours, luncheons, and other special events held at Fuller galleries are also present. Dealer and institution files consist of correspondence, loan and consignments records, bills of sale, commission agreements and contracts, printed material, price lists, and some photographic materials. Financial records contain account ledgers, invoices and receipts, gallery checks, and sales records. Also present are donation records, appraisal reports, and some financial records from Arts Unlimited and Hansen Gallery.

Diana Fuller's papers include project files, appraisal records, membership records, correspondence, and photographic materials. Records related to the Bay Area Consortium for the Visual Arts consist of administrative records, project files, grant applications, 1989 earthquake disaster relief material, and organization finances. Files relating toParallels and Intersections and its accompanying exhibition contain artist files, author files, correspondence, publishing agreements, drafts, cassette tapes, DVDs, and more.

Biographical / Historical:
The Diana Fuller galleries were contemporary art galleries in San Francisco, California, from 1969 to 1990. During this period, the gallery changed name and ownership on several occasions: Hansen-Fuller Gallery (1969-1979), Hansen-Fuller-Goldeen Gallery (1979-1982), Fuller-Goldeen Gallery (1982-1986), and Fuller-Gross Gallery (1987-1990). The three gallerists who partnered with Fuller were Wanda Hansen, Dorothy Goldeen, and Brian Gross. Among the artists represented by Fuller galleries were Beth Van Hosen, William T. Wiley, Roy DeForest, Robert Arneson, Tom Holland, Robert Hudson, Marilyn Levine, and Joan Brown. Fuller galleries held performance and conceptual art exhibitions, music performances, screened films, and rented its space out for luncheons and other special events. The gallery also exhibited at art fairs in the U.S. and Europe.

Diana Burgess Fuller is a curator, editor, and filmmaker who was previously a gallerist and art dealer. Diana Burgess worked at Saks Fifth Avenue when she married author Blair Fuller in 1965. Around 1967, she began working for Wanda Hansen's contemporary art gallery, which changed names from Art Unlimited to Hansen Galleries (sometimes Gallery). In 1969, Fuller and Hansen opened the Hansen-Fuller Gallery. That same year, Blair Fuller and novelist Oakley Hall started the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley. Diana Fuller has been involved with Squaw Valley since its inception, and currently serves as director of its screenwriting program. Fuller continued in the retail art business for a short period after closing the gallerey in 1990. In the late 1990s, Fuller began working on the seminal exhibition and book catalog, Art/Women/California, 1950-2000: Parallels and Intersections (2002), documenting more than 90 women artists working in California in the second half of the twentieth century. Fuller was the former president of the Film Arts Foundation and former chair of the Roxie Theater; she currently serves on the board of Artists in Residence Program at Recology.

Also included are writings, bibliographic information, exhibition ephemera, and clippings pertaining to Nancy Goldring; and photos of artist Noreen Bumb, her artwork, and installations.

Soho 20 is an artist-run gallery founded in 1973 in New York. The gallery's founding members are Elena Borstein, Cynthia Mailman, Barbara Coleman, Maureen Conner, Mary Ann Gillies, Joan Glueckman, Eunice Golden, Margaret Helenchild, Marion Ranyak, Rachel Rolon De Clet, Marilyn Raymond, Halina Rusak, Lucy Sallick, Morgan Sanders, Rosalind Shaffer, Sylvia Sleigh, Eileen Spikol, May Stevens, Suzanne Weisberg, and Sharon Wybrants-Lynch. Soho 20's mission is to provide women and other marginalized artists with resources and opportunities. The gallery became a legal non-profit in 1989.

The Marie Romero Cash papers measure 0.7 linear feet and date from circa 1981 to 2021. The papers document Cash's career as an artist through sketches (some annotated), a sketchbook, photographs, and printed material documenting Cash's sculptures and paintings in the Santera tradition. This also includes the originial illustrations for Santera-based book projects and one fully realized, hand-painted artist book, 'The Book of Tobit.' The book comes in a tin container, with designs in relief created by the artist. Also included is 1 CD containing an episode of 'The Muse,' an arts-based interview program produced by Boss Productions; 1 CD documenting Cash's wooden sculpture 'The Chicken Bus'; and 1 CD labeled "photos: David Alfaya for Marie Cash".

The Marie Romero Cash papers measure 0.7 linear feet and date from circa 1981 to 2021. The papers document Cash's career as an artist through sketches (some annotated), a sketchbook, photographs, and printed material documenting Cash's sculptures and paintings in the Santera tradition. This also includes the originial illustrations for Santera-based book projects and one fully realized, hand-painted artist book, 'The Book of Tobit.' The book comes in a tin container, with designs in relief created by the artist. Also included is 1 CD containing an episode of 'The Muse,' an arts-based interview program produced by Boss Productions; 1 CD documenting Cash's wooden sculpture 'The Chicken Bus'; and 1 CD labeled "photos: David Alfaya for Marie Cash".

Biographical / Historical:
Marie Romero Cash (1942- ) is an artist and Santera (saint artist) living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Cash has completed commissions for St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Cathedral Church of St. John in Albuquerque, and for various other churches in New Mexico.
Provenance:
Donated 2017 and 2022 by Marie Romero Cash.

Some recordings in this collection are only partially transferred, and technical quality of both audio and video components varies. Biographical / Historical:
Pacita Abad (1946-2004) was an Ivatan and Filipina painter based in New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Abad emigrated to the United States from the Philippines in 1970, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1994.

Abad traveled in over 80 countries and different cultures had a profound influence on her artistic style. She developed a technique of trapunto painting, which entailed stitching and stuffing painted canvases to give them a three-dimensional, sculptural effect, and incorporating materials such as traditional cloth, mirrors, beads, shells, plastic buttons, and other objects into the surface of paintings. Abad crafted more than 5,000 artworks over a 30-year career. Her work has been featured in over 60 solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide, and her art is held in private collections and cultural institutions in more than 70 countries.

Donated 2009 by Jack Garrity, Abad's husband and director of Pacita Abad Art Estate.

Biographical / Historical:
Emily Harris Mcgary Selinger (1848-1927) was a painter, author, and poet in Boston, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Emily was originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, and was instrumental in establishing the Normal Art School in Louisville, Kentucky. She was known for her still-life and floral paintings.

Emily's husband, Jean Paul Selinger (1850-1909), was a landscape and portrait painter in Boston, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He opened a summer studio in Glen House, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the mid-1880s.
Provenance:
A portion of the papers was donated in 1982 by Charles and Gloria Vogel when acquired through research on White Mountain artists. Additional material was donated in 1982 by Marion C. Keaney, through her grandparents, the D. H. Remingtons, who were neighbors of Emily Selinger's mother, Mrs. McGary.

New York City, New York painter and author Claudia Schwalb has exhibited at Clocktower Gallery and the New Museum, and is currently a writer for whitehotmagazine.com.

After graduating from Pratt Institute, Schwalb apprenticed with painter Ron Gorchov and began writing for Cover Magazine and other art journals.
