This collection is comprised of 179 slides taken by Marilyn Heldman in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Eritrea, and Cameroon. Subjects include architecture, art objects, marketplaces, pottery, reliefs and cultures including the Anuak, Dorze, Falasha, Fulani, Gurage, Tigre, Falasha .
Scope and Contents:
Series is comprised of images taken in Bafang, Foumban, and Kribi, Cameroon of the waterfall of Mouenkeu, Boroboro peoples, trees, and other natural landscapes. Series two includes photographs taken in Aromo and Senafe, Eritrea of a priest, school children, basket weavers, and a marketplace. Series three includes photographs taken in Kano, Katsina, and Zaria, Nigeria of a view of the city of Kano, people by the City Gate of Kano, a wall and gate in Katsina, and a house in Zaria. Series four is comprised of photographs taken in Ethiopia, particularly in Addis Ababa, Gondor, and Lalibela. Subjects include churches, the Jubilee Palace (Addis Ababa), Guarge peoples, scenes in the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) Museum, markets, murals, city views, castles, religious icons, Lake Tana, Dorze textiles, and one image of Haile Selasse visiting Nazareth.

Biographical / Historical:
Marilyn Heldman was an Adjunct Professor of Art History at American University (Washington, D.C.). Published in such journals as the Journal of Religion in Africa, African Arts and Northeast African Studies, Heldman has also written numerous books, notably African Zion: The Sacred Art of Ethiopia (1993) (cowritten with Stuart C. Munro-Hay). Heldman received a post-doctorate fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts to complete field work in Northern Ethiopia (1973-1974). She has also held positions as Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Missouri at St. Louis and Curatorial Associate at the Museum of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at the Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia (1966-1967).

Documentary film co-directed by Raymundo Gleyzer was shot in the early 1960s in San Fernando, Valley of Hualfín, Catamarca Province, Argentina. It presents the story of three members of the Figueroa family: Temistocles, 94, who worked as a sugar cane harvester; Justina, 83, a potter whose children have moved to the city; and Antonia, 40, a weaver. First released in 1966 as a trilogy, the film appears to have been re-edited in 1969 and again in 1995. In English, the film is known as It Happened in Hualfín. The HSFA holds two versions.

The papers collected here relate to the life and work of Wayne Wolf Robe Hunt, a full-blood Acoma Indian (1905-1977). Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation.
Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center's Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives.
Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Of his work at BAE he said, "My work there as an interpreter is the highlight of my efforts in trying to preseve all of the rich and wholesome lore of my people."*
Not only was the preservation of the 'old ways' important to Wolf Robe, but also the representation and dissemination of his culture to whites, in an effort to promote their understanding and appreciation. He travelled all over Europe and to Australia for the Departments of Agriculture and Commerce, representing the American Indian to an appreciative audience. Much of the incoming correspondence stems from his travels, as do many of the "publicity" photographs.
This collection contains the personal and business papers of a man successfully part of two worlds. Married to a white woman, and devoted to representing, at home and abroad, his tribe and all Indians to whites, Wolf Robe managed to keep close to his tribal world, and actively promoted the preservation and revitalization of his cultural heritage.
