Biographical / Historical:
Whitney Museum of American Art is an American art museum in New York, New York. Founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and formally opened in 1931. Previous to its opening as a museum it was known as the Whitney Studio Club (1914-28) and Whitney Studio Galleries (1928-30).
Provenance:
The Weber files on reels NY59/8-10 were lent for microfilming 1959 by the Whitney Museum of American Art; the remainder was lent 1964-1967; additional material from the Museum was lent at the same time, and subsequently donated, including the papers of Lloyd Goodrich, Juliana Force, Thomas B. Clarke, the American Art Research Council, and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney; these have each been cataloged separately. Portions of Weber, and O'Keeffe material that was microfilmed in 1959 were refilmed in 1967.

Scope and Contents:
Correspondence with dealers, artists, museums, publishers, photography studios, and others regarding art purchases, loans, and Shaw's collection; and 16 v. of scrapbooks containing photographs, letters, and biographical information on artists. Much of the correspondence with artists relates to Shaw's requests for the information which was then used in the scrapbooks. Also included is one volume compiled in 1947 outlining the contents of the scrapbooks.
REELS 1124-1125: 16 vol. of scrapbooks, 1864-1930, relating to artists represented in Shaw's collection, containing letters, many from artists, photographs of artists and their work, biographical data, clippings and articles, and comments on their work; and 1 v., "Notes: Edwin C. Shaw Collection of Paintings," compiled in 1947, and annotated "Used at Women's Art League Meeting at Miss Shaw's in 1947 by Mrs. [Jane S.] Barnhardt, who compiled it, and then given to the Art Institute Library," containing an outline of the contents of the 16 v. of scrapbooks.

Art collector; Akron, Ohio. Shaw, a BF Goodrich executive and avid collector of post-Civil War American art, was one of the founders of the Akron Art Institute, now the Akron Art Museum.

Lent for microfilming 1976 and 1992 by the Akron Art Museum. Shaw bequethed his art collection and papers to the Museum, then named the Akron Art Institute.

REEL D177: Letters from Macknight to Desmond Fitzgerald, Boston critic, collector, dealer, and biographer of Dodge Macknight; press clippings concerning Macknight exhibitions; and letters to Fitzgerald from Isabella Gardner, Claude Monet, and John Henry Twachtman, mostly relating to Macknight.
REELS 2774-2775: 28 volumes of Fitzgerald's personal diary (not in consecutive order) which include a few clippings and photographs; Early volumes relate to Fitzgerald's professional work. Later volumes after 1900 reflect his art interests, giving a full picture of his involvement in the art world. Also contains an account book and a catalog of Fitzgerald's estate sale after his death, IMPORTANT PAINTINGS BY THE INPRESSIONISTS: THE FITZGERALD COLLECTION, 1927.
Biographical / Historical:
Art patron, art collector, and engineer; Brookline, Mass. Served on the boards of the Boston Public Library and of the Copley Society. In 1913, he arranged to have the Armory Show come to Boston. His collection of mainly French and American impressionist paintings by Claude Monet, Dodge Macknight, and others became a kind of semi-public museum. Upon his death, the collection was sold at auction.

Material on reel D177 was lent for microfilming 1965 by Andrew Oliver; material on reels 2774-2775 was purchased 1979 from an auction in New Hampshire by the dealers R. & D. The Archives of American Art arranged to purchase them through a grant from the Hope Foundation of Providence, R.I., a philanthropic organization founded by the Brown family. Fitzgerald was a cousin of John Nicholas Brown.

Letters, photographs and clippings about Blum collected by De Stephano. Correspondence includes 2 letters from Robert Blum (1889, 1900), a letter to Blum from De Stephano (1893), several cables and a letter about Blum's death (1903), letters and 2 legal documents relating to de Stephano's claims against Blum's estate (1903-1932), and letters pertaining to De Stephano's loan of works by Blum to the Carnegie Institute exhibition (1923). Photographs show Blum; groups including Blum, De Stephano, Otto Bacher, William Merritt Chase, John Twachtman, and J. Alden Weir; and paintings by Blum (1889-1911). Printed material consists of a Carnegie Institute exhibition catalog (1923) and 20 clippings (1901-1932).
Biographical / Historical:
After Robert Blum's death, Flora de Stephano claimed to be his widow. She eventually received a small sum of money, some personal possessions, and three paintings by Blum from his executors.

The papers were given to the donor, Alan Pensler, by Webster de Stephano Smith, a descendant of Flora de Stephano.
