A bientôt." Translated message reads, "Antwerp 17 January 1940. Very dear brother director, I duly acknowledge receipt of your epistle and invitation to the waltz. I shall therefore come next Sunday to slip my frozen feet under your table. But I simply cannot face up to two fist fights. Do not be upset if my glorious absence at midday's lunch is conspicuous. However, I shall be there standing attention, at the appointed time, ie around 4 1/2 p.m.. Since it will be cold in the attic and I shall have to marshall all my personal energies, I shall entrust myself to the care of the Lady of the house who shall cover my bed with merciful blankets. See you soon."
