O'Grady, G. N. (Geoffrey N.)  Search this
Extent:
5.75 Linear feet (plus 3 oversize boxes, plus 3 map folders)
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1949-1982
1992 - 1998
Scope and Contents:
This series primarily contains O'Grady's field research among the aboriginal communities of Australia. Document types include notebooks, field notes, card files with vocabulary, computer print outs of synthesized data, a map, and oversized word lists. Some of the languages that are most prominently represented in O'Grady's research include Njaŋumada, Jiŋgada, Umpila, Nyangumarda, Mabuiag, and Yulbaridja. According to Bowern and Alpher, some of the material is in Kenneth Hale's handwriting. Hale and O'Grady worked closely together for many years. Some of the vocabulary slips are in Arthur Capell's handwriting; Capell was Professor at the University of Sydney and worked on a number of Australian languages, especially in the 1940s and 1950s. Also in this series are two folders containing O'Grady's research on Cowichan and another folder containing notes on tonal languages and Swahili.

Sound Recordings

Collection Creator:
Conant, Francis  Search this
Extent:
110 Sound recordings (and 0.4 linear feet)
Type:
Archival materials
Sound recordings
Date:
1956-1965, 1971, 1977-1978, undated
Scope and Contents note:
This series consists primarily of recordings from Conant's field research, recorded on 4", 5", and 6" tape reels. Most of the reels are from his research in Nigeria and include recordings of ceremonies, musical instruments, rock gongs, conversations, speeches, prayers, and vocabulary in Hausa and Bankal. His work in Kenya during the 1960s is represented by recordings of Pokot dialects, music, and a summer solstice ceremony. From his research among the Pokot during the 1970s is a reel containing an interview by his daughter Nora and recordings of songs. Subseries: Other includes a radio interview with Conant; recordings of words and phrases in Celtic, Sebei, and Swahili; and recordings of the Wenner-Gren sponsored conference Conant organized in 1977, The Use Of Landsat Data in the Analysis Of Non-Western Ecosystems.

Information in the below inventory was compiled from several sources, including (when applicable) the leader tape of the reel, the tape box, writing on the reel itself, tape content, and Conant's field notebooks and tape transcripts. In many cases, the writing on the tape boxes have faded to such an extent that they are difficult to read. The cross-references below to Conant's notes should not be considered comprehensive. For the Nigeria recordings, information was also taken from two tape log notebooks, located in Series 1: Nigeria, folders "Tables of Contents: Field Notebooks" and "Tape Transcripts."

Original boxes have all been retained. Those in poor condition were separated and placed in box 43.

Please note that the contents of most of the recordings have not been verified.
