Biographical/Historical note:
The Dale family came to Washington, DC in 1886 when John Henry Dale, Sr., a gifted self-taught man, obtained a position as clerk in the newly contracted Pension Bureau building at 5th and G Streets, NW. First they lived near 13th Street and Florida Avenue, NW, then moved to Howard Road in Anacostia. Dale built a house at 2619 Nichols Avenue, now Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, drawing the plans and supervising the construction. The Dales and only one other family lived in this solidly built house for 100 years before it was sold to a church group and demolished.

Summary:
Hundreds of stereographs and other photographic imagery, especially a large number of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia; other subjects include: the World's Columbian Exhibition (1893); the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the Great Sanitary Fair; a large number on Massachusetts, including a set of images from Old Sturbridge; buildings and scenery; miscellaneous other subjects.
Scope and Contents note:
The collection is composed largely of photographs related to world's fairs, especially the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, particularly in the form of stereographs. Other photographs document Williamsburg, Old Sturbridge, Mass., and other locations.

Collection is arranged into one series. Arranged geographically and topically.
Historical:
Stereographs were employed to document and popularize the great world's
fairs of the second half of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth century in the United States and Europe. The Centennial Photographic Company, in particular, was formed essentially to disseminate information about the 1876 fair and to profit from its "educational" products. More generally, the three-dimensional photographic medium was considered an ideal way to provide views of regional attractions in the United States. This collection contains both subjects.

The collection consists of 378 posters documenting important public service issues including education, health and safety, and cultural programs. These posters were widely displayed throughout the island and reflect key trends in the social history of Puerto Rico for nearly fifty years.

The collection consists of 378 posters, the majority of which are approximately 22" x 28" documenting social, cultural and educational issues for Puerto Rico. The posters were widely displayed throughout Puerto Rico and reflect key trends in the social history of Puerto Rico for fifty years. The collection is divided into three series: Series one document events, series two is social services and series three relates to economic and employment issues.
