Scope and Contents:
A series of scrapbooks compiled by Card on late 19th and early 20th century illustrators and cartoonists, each containing illustrations and political cartoons from magazines, newspapers, and books, together with lists of illustrations, and in some cases critical and biographical articles. Most of the reproductions are from Harper's Weekly and Monthly, Scribner's, and Century. Illustrators represented are Edwin Austin Abbey (2 v., 1871-1929, reel N68-17), Arthur B. Frost (4 v., 1874-1924, reel N68-18), Arthur I. Keller (3 v., 1886-1924, reel N68-23), Edward W. Kemble (6 v., 1880-1919, reels N68-24 & 25), Charles Stanley Reinhart (3 v., 1870-1897, reel N68-31), Frederic Remington (5 v., 1886-1938, reel N68-26), and William Thomas Smedley (1 v., 1880-1910, reel N68-32).

Maynard, Charles F. W. Mielatz, B. Mitchell, James C. Nicoll, Ivan G. Olinsky, John F. O'Sullivan, W. P. Phelps, William M. Post, Frederick Richardson, Roswell M. Shurtleff, William T. Biographical / Historical:
Artists' Fellowship's purpose is to assist artists and their families in case of sickness, bereavement or distress. It grew out of the Helpful Society, founded 1868, and housed in the Tenth Street Studio Building. It became the Artists' Mutual Aid Society, whose name was changed in 1889 to the Artists' Aid Society. In 1925 the Society was incorporated as Artists' Fellowhip, Inc.
Provenance:
Donated 1980 by Artists' Fellowship, via Michael Engel II, President. The original negatives and album of vintage prints on reel 2029 were found in the offices of the National Academy of Design, where the Fellowship at one time maintained offices.

A sketchbook, photographs, scrapbook, and printed materials.
REEL 1207: 58 letters most responding to an invitation for a dinner, given in honor of Smedley, 1892; 13 photographs of smedley, a painting, unidentified people, and a house; 21 clippings; an autographed menu; a catalog of drawings by Smedley; and a ticket to the New Orleans Chess, Checkers, and Whist Club.
REELS 1255 and 1271 (photographs): A sketchbook; 41 photographs of portraits painted by Smedley; and a scrapbook containing letters, personal photographs, photographs of art work, and memorabilia.

Provenance:
Material on reel 1207 lent for microfilming 1977 by Elsie Williams. Material on reels 1255 and 1271 lent for microfilming 1977 by Mr. H.G. Huntington. Williams's and Huntington's relationship to Smedley is unknown.
