Summary:

The Scurlock photographic studio was a fixture in the Shaw area of Washington, D.C. from 1911 to 1994, and encompassed two generations of photographers, Addison N. Scurlock (1883-1964) and his sons George H. (1920- 2005) and Robert S. (1916-1994). Biographical / Historical:

The Improved, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (I.B.P.O.E.) was formed in 1898 in Cincinnati, Ohio by B.F. Howard and Arthur J. Riggs, a Pullman porter. They had been denied membership in the all-white Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and they were determined to form an organization that "granted membership to all qualified individuals without regard to race, creed, or ethnicity". Each Elk Lodge is governed by an Exalted Ruler. Past Exalted Rulers are those who have previously held this rank.

Group of men and women seated. There are two shield shaped decorated with an elk at either end of the room. A few men wear fezzes, including a man at the front. His fez is embroidered, "Grand Exalted Ruler I.B.P.O.E.W.", he also wear a chain of office as does the women to his left. Ink on negative: caption and "Scurlock Photo". No edge imprint. Pencil retouching on faces.

Biographical / Historical:

The Improved, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (I.B.P.O.E.) was formed in 1898 in Cincinnati, Ohio by B.F. Howard and Arthur J. Riggs, a Pullman porter. They had been denied membership in the all-white Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and they were determined to form an organization that "granted membership to all qualified individuals without regard to race, creed, or ethnicity". Each Elk Lodge is governed by an Exalted Ruler. The Grand Exalted Ruler governs Grand Lodge. Their women's organisation is called the Daughters of the I.B.P.O.E. and is organised in Temples.
