This is the Kimberley Club, which was one of the most famous clubs in South African during that period. Designed by Friede Stege in November 1965, this garden was noted for its incorporation of roses into the overall landscape design. Stege situated the rose garden adjacent to the home's screen porch and terraces where it could be enjoyed by homeowner and guest alike. An adjacent woodland gave an added dimension to the overall design.

General:
Lois W. Poinier designed landscaping for this site over a period of years beginning in 1952. The early 1950s saw construction of a small brick patio adjacent to a screened porch, augmented by shrubs and potted plants. Enclosure of this porch around 1960 led to additional landscaping and construction of a larger, ground-level patio. Images also document the mature garden in the late 1960s. Although Poinier identified the property as being on Colt Road in Summit, town directories from the 1960s indicate that the owners were living on Warwick Road at that time.

General:
The grounds of this quarter acre downtown property were too water-logged for conventional planting so working with garden designer Stephen Rosselet the owners created a pond and bog garden connected by a channel. A screened porch overlooked the garden and an elevated boardwalk laid out in a zig-zag provided access. After it was dug the pond was lined with a 500-pound sheet of rubber and edged with field rocks, while the bog was lined with perforated plastic for drainage. Shrubs, grasses and ferns that thrive in wet soil were planted in large swathes; moss at the edge of the bog was maintained by spraying buttermilk. The water garden provided habitat for birds, butterflies, and a pair of mallards that adopted this property.

General:
The Black Garden designed by J. Duke Moody had a formal symmetrical structure with two brick terraces with outdoor furniture, fountains and brick-edged garden borders with easily maintained plantings. Sculptures were placed on plinths against brick backdrops and a wrought iron gazebo at the end of the principle terrace was planted with yellow trumpet vine. Although originally a mid-19th c. farmhouse the brick building was updated with French grille doors, a bay window overlooking the garden, and a garden room made from a screened porch.
This garden was originally documented as part of the Hollerith Family slide collection donated in 1993. An update of the garden documentation was provided in 2012.
