Biographical / Historical:
According to Bureau of American Ethnology-AR for 1918-1919, page 5, at the end of the year [1918]" Swanton "prepared a grammatical sketch of the Natchez language from materials collected by him during the last ten years from one of the three surviving speakers of the tongue."

Texts are arranged in the order that the stories appear in Swanton, "Myths and Tales of the Southeastern Indians," Bureau of American Ethnology-B 88, Washington, D. C., 1915. The Manuscript texts include all the Natchez stories in Bureau of American Ethnology-B 88 except stories 11, 16, and 17. The typescript text for story 1 only, "The Flood," includes a grammatical analysis (20 pages).

Includes typescript document, 2 pages. Stories were numbered in 1970 to correspond with numbers of stories published in Swanton, "Myths and Tales of the Southeastern Indians," Bureau of American Ethnology-B 88, Washington, D. C., 1915, and are arranged insofar as possible in that order. The following stories are present: 1-5, 7, 9, 11, 13-14, 16-19, 22-29, 30 (last page only), 31-32, 34, 38, 40, 43.

On the first and last pages of story 9, are written the native names and clan affiliations of Watt Sam, Nancy Taylor, and Lizzie Rooster. On the first page of story 14 are listed Natchez and Cherokee clan names (transcribed in Manuscript Number 4144).
