Scope and Contents:
Correspondence with dealers, artists, museums, publishers, photography studios, and others regarding art purchases, loans, and Shaw's collection; and 16 v. of scrapbooks containing photographs, letters, and biographical information on artists. Much of the correspondence with artists relates to Shaw's requests for the information which was then used in the scrapbooks. Also included is one volume compiled in 1947 outlining the contents of the scrapbooks.
REELS 1124-1125: 16 vol. of scrapbooks, 1864-1930, relating to artists represented in Shaw's collection, containing letters, many from artists, photographs of artists and their work, biographical data, clippings and articles, and comments on their work; and 1 v., "Notes: Edwin C. Shaw Collection of Paintings," compiled in 1947, and annotated "Used at Women's Art League Meeting at Miss Shaw's in 1947 by Mrs. [Jane S.] Barnhardt, who compiled it, and then given to the Art Institute Library," containing an outline of the contents of the 16 v. of scrapbooks.

Biographical / Historical:
Art collector; Akron, Ohio. Shaw, a BF Goodrich executive and avid collector of post-Civil War American art, was one of the founders of the Akron Art Institute, now the Akron Art Museum.
Provenance:
Lent for microfilming 1976 and 1992 by the Akron Art Museum. Shaw bequethed his art collection and papers to the Museum, then named the Akron Art Institute.

Scope and Contents:
Papers concerning Proctor's bronze statue THE PIONEER MOTHER, commissioned by Howard Vanderslice in 1924 and presented to the city of Kansas City, Mo. in 1927. The figures depicted in the sculpture are Vanderslice family members, including Major Daniel Vanderslice, a veteran of Indian wars and an appointed agent to tribes in Missouri; his son Thomas J. Vanderslice with his wife and infant son, Howard Vanderslice, ca. 1853. Included are: a letter to Proctor from Maria Wulff, the model for the statue, and Elizabeth Ewing regarding their impressions of the sculpture, 1924; a letter to "My dear Howard" from Wulff and Ewing, Nov. 11, 1927, the day the sculpture was dedicated 1927; 2 annotated calling cards from Proctor mentioning it; clippings, 1926-1935, regarding THE PIONEER MOTHER and other works by Proctor; photographs of Proctor, his family, home and studio, undated and 1925; a photograph of Vanderslice, 1927; 5 photographs of Maria Wulff "in the dress of the Pioneer Mother," 1925; and photographs of THE PIONEER MOTHER and other works. Also included are an eulogy to Proctor by the Camp Fire Club of America, 1950; a watercolor by Jean Proctor; an etching by William Proctor, 1937.

Proctor was a sculptor; Wilton, Conn.; Palo Alto and Hollywood, Calif.
Provenance:
Donated 1989 by the Bowers Museum, Santa Ana, California, who received the papers from a friend of the museum, who stated only that they came from "an old house."

Plaster casting firm; New York, N.Y. Following training in Italy, Attilio (1884-1960) and his son Cesare (b. 1907) came to America and operated A. Contini and Son, New York, N.Y, making plaster molds for sculptures by wide group of artists, including James Earle Fraser, Ivan Mestrovic, Herbert Haseltine, A. Stirling Calder, Adolph Weinman, Gaston Lachaise, and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.

A statement of purpose of the fund; a volume of Rinehart Committee meeting minutes, including Rinehart's will; abstracts of minutes and reports of the Rinehart Committtee; a ledger recording Rinehart Fund expenditures, including cash paid for scholarships, instructors' salaries, models, shipment of works from Rome and Paris to Baltimore, and sculpture acquisitions; William T. Walters and B. F. Newcomer's account with Rinehart's estate; bills and receipts; printed material, including regulations for scholarships; clippings; and miscellany.
Correspondence includes ca. 200 letters from Rome and Paris, from Rinehart scholars including letters from J. Edgar Stouffer, with one letter containing 5 photographs of his sculpture, C. Percival Dietsch, Alexander Phimister Proctor, Hermon Atkins MacNeil, Hans Schuler, Charles Keck, J. Maxwell Miller and others; correspondence and indexed abstracts of letters of the Rinehart Advisory Committee, including letters from Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French, Edwin Howland Blashfield and Charles K. McKim; correspondence of the Rinehart Fund Committee and Peabody Institute officials, including letters from Daniel Coit Gilman, Faris C. Pitt, Lawrason Riggs, Henry Walters, and P.R. Uhler; and a letterpress book.
Biographical / Historical:
The American neo-classical sculptor, Willam Henry Rinehart, established this fund through a bequest to provide scholarships for young artists to study in Paris and at the American Academy in Rome. Administered through the Peabody Institute, Baltimore, Md.

Lent for microfilming 1984 by the Peabody Institute.
