An interview of Robert Bechtle conducted 2010 February 8 and 9, by Judith Olch Richards, for the Archives of American Art, at Bechtle's home and studio, in San Francisco, California.

Interview of Robert Bechtle, conducted by Judith Richards for the Archives of American Art, in Bechtle's home in San Francisco, California on February 8 and 9, 2010. This is a second interview conducted for the archives, continuing from an interview with Bechtle in 1980. The interview mainly focuses on how is work has changed or remained the same since 1980; in particular his lighting study from midday to morning and evening; the grouping of photos to create a painting; new technology; the continuing challenges of his work; dispelling popular notions about his work such as the idea of neutral light and the Americana symbolism of his cars; his teaching endeavors at San Francisco State University and California College of Arts and Crafts; and the transition from his gallery residency at OK Harris to Barbara Gladstone; Bechtle also recalls Ivan Karp, Chuck Close, Ralph Goings, Edward Hopper, Jerome Witkin, Rackstraw Jones, Kathan Brown, Wayne Theibaud, Mitzi Pederson, and others.

An interview of Peter Rodriguez conducted 2004 October 23-24, by Nora Wagner, for the Archives of American Art, in San Francisco, Calif.
Rodriguez speaks of his family background, early childhood and elementary art education; travels to Mexico, Alaska, Colorado, and Washington, D.C.; exhibitions he participated in as well as curated; joining Galería de la Raza; the founding of the Mexican Museum in San Francisco, grants received and support from the San Francisco community; artists Jesse Aguirre, Manuel Villamor, and Ester Hernandez; Ann Rockefeller Roberts and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Collection of Mexican Folkart, acquired by the Mexican Museum in 1985. Rodriquez also discusses the various art forms he works in, including, sculpture, tapestry, oil painting, acrylic painting, portraits of artists, and pen and ink drawings; a collection of chairs he made; his 1992 Retrospective at the Haggin Museum, in Stockton, Calif.; his creativity and color scheme for exhibitions; appointment as an Art Commissioner for the city of San Francisco, 1977-1986; the Rosa Covarrubias collection; the different locations of the Mexico Museum; current funding for a new building on Mission Street; the exhibition "Lo del Corazon"; and his own hopes for the future of the Mexican Museum. Rodriguez also recalls Rufino Tamayo, Adriana Williams, Lauro Lopez, Chucho Reyes Ferreira, Rupert Garcia, Alfredo Arreguin, Candelario Medrano, Terrey Dickey, Bea Carrillo, and Tomás Ybarra-Frausto.

Conner speaks of his education and move to San Francisco; the art scene in California in the 1960s; the development and theory behind much of his work; his early paintings and collages; his assemblages; the sculpture A Child [1959] and its showing at the de Young Museum in 1959-60; his interaction with Beat writers; about the coining of the words "beatnik" and "hippie" and subsequent commercial exploitation of the Beat generation; and his attitude towards political protest. He also recalls Michael McClure, Wallace Berman, Ed Kienholz, Jay DeFeo, Wally Hedrick, Allen Ginsberg and others.

Wally Hedrick (1928-2003) was a sculptor and painter from San Geronimo, Calif. Grew up in Pasadena, Calif. Active in the Funk movement and the Beat Era in San Francisco. Developed the concept of "junk art".
