The collection contains stereographs by various makers. Most depict trains, railroads and railroad related subjects such as railyards, railroad bridges, elevated trains. Also included are many maritime subjects, including steamships, riverboats, harbors and shipyards. A few of the cards depict scenes in American cities such as New York and Chicago. The vast majority of the images are of scenes in the Northeastern United States, though there are several from Colorado, and a few foreign subjects.

These papers contain materials relating to the design and construction of highway bridges: scrapbooks of clippings compiled by Morgan on suspension, concrete arch, moveable, steel arch, timber, concrete, steel simple span, cantilever, and stone bridges; photographs of American bridges taken by Morgan, 1938; clippings, photographs, pamphlets, and books on bridge welding, 1909-1959; catalog histories, construction stories, and illustrated pamphlets, 1902-1959; drawings and articles on moveable bridges, 1924; reprints, brochures, technical reports, research reports, bridge authority reports and advertising for highway bridges, chiefly in New York and San Francisco, 1918-1959; unsorted clippings on highway bridges, bridge welding, and tunnels, 1954-1968; seven binders of bridge photographs, 1922-1937; and clippings and photographs of bridge construction design, 1969-1972.

Biographical / Historical:
Dean F. Petersen (1913-1989) graduated from Utah State with a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. He earned his masters and doctorate in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Petersen taught engineering at Utah State, 1946 to 1949 and at Colorado State University, 1949-1957. He served as Dean of the College of Engineering at Utah State, 1957-1973. Petersen specialized in hydraulics and water resource management and published widely on these subjects.

Donated by Dean F. Peterson in 1977 to the Museum's Division of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (now the Division of Engineering and Industry).
