Employment Registers

Scope and Contents:
The three volumes of employment registers, 1 (116), 2 (117), and 3 (118), cover the period 1864–65. Most of these records were created before the establishment of the Bureau. Volume 1 (116) is primarily a register of employed blacks. It also contains many miscellaneous series such as a list of freedpeople at the mouth of the White River (February 1, 1864), accounting records, a register of deaths at Freedmen's Home Farm (June–July 1864), and a register of passes issued to freedpeople. Volume 2 (117) is a register of employees of freedmen and is arranged alphabetically by initial letter of the surname of the employer (January–February 1865). Volume 3 (118) is a register of employed freedmen and is arranged alphabetically by initial letter of the surname of the freedman. This volume is dated August–November, but there is no indication of the exact year, although it is probably 1865.

Summary:
This collection consists of the records and historical materials of the Early Bird organization, including correspondence; photographs; the organization's newsletter, Chirp; financial records; reunion memorabilia; biographical material of members; and membership lists. This material was donated to the Museum after the National Air Museum was designated as the official repository for Early Bird records.
Scope and Contents:
The Early Birds of Aviation, Inc. Collection (acc. XXXX-0566) contains approximately 18 cubic feet of material relating to this group of early pilots. The material includes correspondence, financial records, periodicals, photographic material, published materials and various other media containing information on the organization and its individual members.

The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) was designated by the Early Birds as the official repository for the organization in 1960 and the Museum has obtained materials at different times from various members. Much of the material in the collection is comprised of the records and memorabilia of the organization's officers, including Paul Garber, past President as well as Archivist/Historian for the group. In addition to the records contained in this collection, members have donated to NASM aircraft, plaques and other items of historical interest.

Some preliminary processing work had been done on this collection by 1996, but much of the material remained without obvious order. Original order, when identified, has been maintained.

Material was added from the Museum's Archives' Technical Files on organizations but researchers seeking information on individual members may wish to cross-reference the biographical section of the Technical Files located in NASM's Archives downtown which includes folders for most of the Early Birds.

Some members of the Early Birds remained quite active with the organization until the late 1980s. The material in the collection therefore spans over eighty years.

Biographical / Historical:
Founded after the National Air Races of 1928, the Early Birds (later to be known as the Early Birds of Aviation, Inc.) consisted of pioneer aviators banded together for the purposes of preserving aviation history, advancing interest in aeronautics and the enjoyment of good fellowship. Membership in the group necessitated documentary evidence of solo flight in heavier- or lighter-than-air craft before December 17, 1916. This date was of some significance to the Early Birds, being the thirteenth anniversary (that number being considered propitious) of the first sustained, powered, heavier-than-air flight by the Wrights at Kitty Hawk. Those interested in flying in this pre-World War I period were often required to build their own craft and instruct themselves in the necessary skills to pilot it and members took great pride in this evidence of initiative. (For nationals of countries other than the United States which were engaged in the War the conditional date was set at August 4, 1914.)

As an organization, the Early Birds was responsible for the preservation of aircraft and records, the erection of numerous markers and monuments and the education of the public on the importance of aviation. With members including Glenn Curtiss, Blanche Stuart Scott, Matilde Moisant, Grover Loening, Roy Knabenshue, Sir Thomas Sopwith, Katherine Stinson, Marjorie Stinson, Earle Ovington, Matty Laird, Anthony Fokker and Giuseppe Bellanca, their contributions as individuals were incalculable.

Numbering nearly 600 members at its peak, the Early Birds was conceived of as a "last man's club" whose existence would cease with the passing of its last surviving member.

The records of the Superintendent of Education include eight unbound series and one volume of school reports. Among the records are retained copies of outgoing reports of the Superintendent and originals of reports received from district superintendents, assistant subassistant commissioners, and teachers.

The unbound monthly statistical school reports of the Superintendent, July 1865–June 1870, are arranged chronologically by month. Most of these reports were prepared on printed forms, and all include such data as the names and locations of schools, the dates of their opening and closing, the names of sponsoring benevolent societies or other patrons, and the amount of tuition paid by freedmen. The reports also give information concerning the sex, race, age, and attendance of the pupils as well as the number studying each subject. Related to the unbound reports and providing almost identical information is a volume of the State Superintendent's monthly school reports, April 1869–June 1870, also arranged chronologically.

The monthly reports on school buildings, August–December 1869 and April 1870, are arranged chronologically and contain information on Bureau and non–Bureau buildings. Information about each structure includes its locations; its physical composition, condition, and value; and the owner and value of the land upon which it was situated.

Among the reports received by the Superintendent are monthly statistical school reports of district superintendents (redesignated subassistant commissioner after April 1867), July 1865–April 1869 and January 1870. These are arranged chronologically by month and thereunder numerically by district (or subdistrict after April 1867). Because the reports, which were prepared on forms, give essentially the same kind of information as the monthly reports prepared by the Superintendent of Education, they were evidently used by him in compiling his reports.

The monthly school reports from assistant subassistant commissioners and agents, January 1868–January 1869, are arranged chronologically by month and thereunder by subdistrict and, until August 1868, by division within the subdistrict. They generally contain information on schools within a division. Most of the reports were prepared on forms containing 19 questions relating to the number of schools in operation and teachers employed, the need for additional schools and teachers, the efforts and ability of freedmen and the aid societies to meet the educational needs of the division, and the public sentiment toward the education of freedmen and impoverished whites.

Three miscellaneous series of reports also are among the Superintendent's records. The first of these consists of five inspection reports for March–April 1866, prepared by Chaplain Charles H. Raymond, Inspector of Schools for Virginia, which include tabulated data and remarks about schools visited, teachers and pupils, discipline, and types of studies. A second series consists of a few descriptive school reports forwarded by assistant superintendents and subassistant commissioners, March 1867–July 1868, which are arranged chronologically by month. The reports briefly discuss locations of schools, attendance, financial support, and teachers. In some cases, educational problems and the competency of individual teachers are considered. The remaining series of miscellaneous reports was the result of responses to six different circulars and circular letters issued by the Assistant Commissioner and Superintendent of Education in Virginia and in Bureau headquarters. The issuances, dated between July 18, 1866, and October 6, 1868, requested various types of data concerning schools, teachers, and buildings. The reports are arranged either chronologically according to the circular to which they pertain and thereunder by district or chronologically by date of the response. A copy of each issuance has been reproduced immediately preceding the documents pertaining to it.

Monthly school reports of teachers, November 1865 and January 1866–June 1871, are arranged chronologically and were prepared on forms devised in the Office of the Superintendent of Education. The forms contain statistical data furnished by individual teachers concerning the number of pupils enrolled; attendance; subjects taught in day, night, and Sabbath schools; and the amount of tuition paid by students. Some forms also contain more lengthy narrative remarks by teachers. Some of the reports apparently pertain to non–Bureau schools. Filmed directly after the school reports is a bound register containing the names of teachers to whom forms and envelopes were sent, May 1869–June 1870; the names are arranged alphabetically by name of county.

Reports of Rations Issued and Related Records

Three of the series are unbound statistical reports submitted, for the most part, on printed forms. These include monthly and quarterly reports of rations issued by subordinate officers, August 1865–December 1868; retained copies of semimonthly, monthly, and quarterly rations reports prepared by the Assistant Commissioner, September 1865–November 1868; and miscellaneous ration reports of subordinate officers, July 1865–December 1868. All are arranged chronologically.

The statistical monthly and quarterly rations reports of subordinate officers list the number of rations issued, the number of people given rations, the number of births and deaths, and other statistics. These reports generally concern camps, colonies, and hospitals operated by the Bureau in North Carolina.

Retained copies of rations reports of the Assistant Commissioner are mostly monthly reports that summarize the same type of information as the above reports, but for the various subdivisions of the State of North Carolina.

The miscellaneous trimonthly, monthly, and quarterly rations reports are from subordinates officers who reported the clothing, rations, and medicine issued and other statistics.

In addition, there are several brief series of reports or records relating to subsistence rations, rations issued, and destitution. Receipts for rations issued by the Bureau to persons, December 1866–July 1867, are arranged chronologically. These list the color of the person, the number in the family, the amount of rations, and the date, and include the signatures of those receiving rations. The abstract of subsistence stores received and issued by subordinate officers, December 1866–June 1868, are arranged chronologically and indicate how much corn and pork was on hand or issued and whether issued to whites or blacks.

A few narrative reports on destitution, August–October 1867, and January–June 1868, are arranged chronologically and recount destitution in the subdistricts reporting. These reports indicate, in particular, whether the county boards of wardens were able to cope with the problem of destitution and provide needed relief. At last, chronologically arranged, miscellaneous series of reports of destitution of 1866 lists some landowners who needed seet to plant crops and some people who needed relief.

Summary:
William Ian Brinkworth's collection, dated from 1901 to 1991, includes an extensive number of black and white photographs, negatives, color transparencies, books, audio tapes, manuscripts, and research materials. The manuscripts include Brinkworth's book drafts, film treatments, correspondence, historical documents, legal documents, journals and magazines in which his work was published.
Scope and Contents:
Brinkworth's black and white photographs, 35mm negatives and color transparencies form a major component of the collection and illustrate a vast array of subjects titled and arranged by Brinkworth. Many images focus on the Benin region of Nigeria, Olakun figures and shrines, hairstyles, bronze casting and Benin bronzes, tattooing, the Queens of the Oba, crafts and art objects, towns and marketplaces, seated dancing, personal adornment, agriculture and industry, and ceremonies and the daily life of Nigerian people. Subjects of special interest include the "Watchers of the Night" masquerade, the crowning of a chief in Abeokuta and the titling of a Yoruba chief. Also included are images of a Felesh priest (or "God of Thunder"), the Yoruba city of Jebba, a Popo women's cult, the Nupe people and a workshop in Bida, the University College at Ibadan and G.A. Akiola, the Aro of Igan Alade. Although the images were largely taken in Nigeria, there are a small number that depict domestic life of the Brinkworth family in England.

Brinkworth's manuscripts and personal documents include an extensive official diary from 1901 of Major W. R. Reeve-Tucker, the first British Traveling Commissioner in Nigeria. The series also includes some of Brinkworth's passports, personal notes, an "Enquiry into the Ogwashi-Uku Native Court," a treatment for the film African Priestess, essay and book drafts (many focusing on the mud figures of Benin), an issue of Functional Photography magazine featuring an article by Ian Brinkworth, correspondence, and paperwork concerning the law suit filed against Brinkworth by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Brinkworth's collection of publications contains books, pamphlets and articles from Noir Et Blanc and Picture Post featuring his photography.
Arrangement note:
Series 1 is arranged according to subject categories supplied by Brinkworth. Series 2 and 3 were kept in original order. Series 4 is organized according to Brinkworth's hand-written number annotations. All unnumbered transparencies were kept in the order in which they were received. Series 5 is arranged chronologically as well as according to Brinkworth's notes and number markings. Series 6 is arranged according to packet number, those unidentified are arranged miscellaneously. Series 7 is arranged according to subject and Series 8 is organized by tape number.

Biographical/Historical note:
William Ian Brinkworth (1914-2000) was born in Karagpur, India to British parents and raised in Scotland, France, Germany and England. His interest in art brought him to the Slade School of Fine Art in London where he was trained as a painter. While studying there, Brinkworth was named a Slade Scholar and awarded the Slade Summer Composition Prize.

The outbreak of World War II changed Brinkworth's career path from painter to soldier. He first served in the Infantry, later joined the Intelligence Corps and then worked with the Free French forces and First Special Air Service Regiment. Brinkworth was taken prisoner in Sardinia for two years and after his release was seconded as a liaison officer between the Foreign Office and the United Nations in 1946. Brinkworth's military service earned him the Member of the British Empire (MBE) medal and an appointment by the British Colonial Administration Service to the position of Assistant District Officer to the Resident of Warri, Nigeria in 1946. He went on to become District Officer and finally Senior District Officer of the region.

Brinkworth's professional responsibilities involved extensive travel throughout Nigeria to many peoples and regions including Warri, Abeakuta, Badagri, Benin, Ogwashiuku, Alaro, Ibaden, Asaba and Ado-Ekiti. While serving as District Officer, Brinkworth was able to incorporate his artistic training and interests with his administrative obligations, chiefly through the mediums of photography and film. Brinkworth's administrative status and extensive interaction with local peoples of Nigeria earned him the privilege of witnessing and filming cultural traditions never before or rarely seen by Westerners.

Brinkworth served as a British Officer in Nigeria until 1957 and continued to minister as an advisor to the independent Nigerian nation during its transition to self-government. He then returned to England and pursued work as a broadcaster, documentary filmmaker, photographer, lecturer and writer. In 1961 he published his first novel, Jimmy Riddle [London; Cassell & Company Ltd., 1961], which won the Putnam Award. He went on to publish the novel's sequel, The Black List [London; Cassell & Company Ltd, 1962], and several other books including his 1966 autobiography The One-Eyed Man Is King [London; Cassell & Company Ltd, 1966]. He often wrote under the pseudonym "Ian Brook." Brinkworth also published several articles in The Geographical Magazine and The West African Review.

After retiring, Brinkworth lived in France with his second wife, Marida, from 1981-1991 before returning once again to England. Much of the photographic, film and art objects from his time in Africa were lost in shipment shortly before his death in 2000. The museum received the remainder of the collection through a donation by Marida Brinkworth in 2008.

The records of the Fine Arts Federation of New York, a consortium of New York City arts and architecture organizations, measure 15.2 linear feet and date from 1895-2005, bulk 1935-2002. The Federation's activities on behalf of the interests of the constituent organizations and the greater community are documented through officers' files, correspondence, administrative records, scattered printed materials, and scrapbooks.

The records do not span the entire history of the F.A.F.; records prior to 1935 are few and scattered. Generally, the records document the activities of those officers' who served terms from the mid-20th century to the end of the century, and who maintained and donated their files to the Archives of American Art.

Presidents' Files contain scattered correspondence of F.A.F. presidents from 1935-early 1950s, and the files maintained or collated during presidental tenures from the 1970s and the 1990s-2000s. Secretaries' Files contain scattered records of various F.A.F. secretaries from the 1930s-early 1950s, and the files maintained or collated during particular secretaries' tenures from 1952-late 1970s and the early 2000s. Records in both series contain a variety of materials including administrative records, correspondence, meetings records, and subject files. Treasurers' Files include correspondence, two financial ledgers, lists of membership dues, and tax-related materials from 1915-1967.

The bulk of the Correspondence Series ranges from the 1930s-1960s and contains correspondence from constituent societies, special committees, and standing committees, as well as some miscellaneous chronological correspondence. Administrative Records include records related to the F.A.F. constitution and by-laws; meeting minutes and ancillary records; and project files from the late 1980s. Printed Materials include scattered announcements, catalogs, clippings, and pamphlets from the late 20th century to 2000s. Folders containing various types of records with little discernable order, a mélange of correspondence, drafts, meeting minutes, mimeographs, notes, reports, scattered clippings, transcriptions, and other documents, the bulk from the mid-1930s-1950s, comprise the Miscellaneous Series. There are also two photo scrapbooks documenting two separate events held in 1995.

Historical Note:
The Fine Arts Federation of New York was established in 1895 "to ensure united action by the Art Societies of New York in all matters affecting their common interests; and to foster and protect the artistic interests of the community."

A consortium of New York City arts and architecture organizations, the F.A.F. has been responsible for saving historic buildings, promoting the arts, and providing a vision of the city's architectural future. The F.A.F. also provided delegate nominations to the New York City mayor for the Art Commission, a panel of architects and artists who reviewed proposed development to public property.

Presidents and other officers of the F.A.F. included Joseph H. Freedlander (1935-1937), A. F. Brinckerhoff (1937-1939), James C. Mackenzie (1940-1941), Wheeler William (1943, 1946-1948), Howard Greenley (Vice President, 1943-1944), Charles Downing Lay (Acting President, 1945), Richard Bach (1948-1950), Harvey Stevenson (1950-1951?), Giorgio Cavaglieri (1971-1974; 2001-2002), Margot Gayle (1974-1977), Nanne Wollmann (1992?-1994?), Roy Gussow (1996?-1997), and Lorrie Goulet (1997-2001), among others.

For many years in the mid-20th century, the Fine Arts Federation was located in the Architectural League of New York building on East 40th Street.

Separated Material:
The Fine Arts Federation loaned materials to the Archives of American Art for microfilming in 1970 which are available on microfilm reel N70/16 and by interlibrary loan. These materials were not included in later donations and are not described in the container listing of this finding aid. They include correspondence with or related to the Municipal Art Society, mostly about the nomination of delegates to the F.A.F. and appointments to the New York City Art Commission and the mayor's Panel of Architects, 1961-1967; annual and semi-annual meeting reports for 1961-1965, and 1967; and an address by J. Roy Carroll, president of the American Institute of Architects, to the officers and board of the F.A.F., November 1963, concerning the artists-architect's role in society.
Provenance:
The Fine Arts Federation loaned materials for microfilming in 1968 and 1970; these same records were later donated, along with multiple accretions from 1978-2007 by former officers of the F.A.F., including Minor Bishop, Giorgio Cavaglieri, Margot Gayle, Lorrie Goulet, Katherine Thayer Hobson, Henriette Nathan, and Nanne Wollmann.

The records of the Architectural League of New York measure 114.9 linear feet and date from 1880s-1974 (bulk 1927-1968). The League's mission "to advance the art of architecture" is documented through administrative and business records, committee records and officers' files, exhibition files, records of functions and events, correspondence, publicity files, photographs, lantern slides, and 16 scrapbooks.
Scope and Content Note:
The records of the Architectural League of New York measure 114.9 linear feet and date from 1880s-1974 (bulk 1927-1968). The League's mission "to advance the art of architecture" is documented through administrative and business records, committee records and officers' files, exhibition files, records of functions and events, correspondence, publicity files, photographs, lantern slides, and scrapbooks.

League records prior to 1927 are limited in the collection and are mostly found among Administrative Files. The administrative files include a nearly complete collection of annual reports from 1889-1932 and various meetings minutes from 1889 through the mid-20th century. Also found is a history of the League written by founding member Cass Gilbert, documentation of the changes of the League Constitution and By-Laws during the first half of the 20th century, and other administrative records.

Over a third of the collection are records from committees, including voluminous records of the Executive Committee, Current Work Committee, House Committee, Finance Committee, Membership Committee, and Scholarships and Special Awards Committee. In addition, there are scattered records for minor committees. Materials include correspondence, meeting minutes, election ballots, financial records, membership records, documents related to awarding scholarships and awards, and other administrative and organizational committee records. Found is the original 1889 agreement between the Architectural League, the Art Students League, and the Society of American Artists to build the American Fine Arts Society building. Throughout the collection, but especially in the Membership Committee subseries, the records provide a glimpse into the struggles the League faced during the Depression through World War II to maintain dues-paying members.

Officers' Files includes collated records of the League Executive Secretary and Secretary, as well as correspondence of the League President and Treasurer. Materials found here are not comprehensive; similar materials can be found throughout the collection.

Financial records such as bank statements, correspondence, and ledgers; insurance correspondence and policies; and legal correspondence, are found in the Business Records series. This series does not include records prior to 1926.

Exhibition files provide detailed documentation of the exhibitions sponsored by, or held at, the League primarily from the 1930s to the early 1970s. Records related to the League Annual Exhibition, the National Gold Medal Exhibitions, and the 1939 World's Fair in New York are found here, as well as exhibition files arranged chronologically by exhibition date and miscellaneous administrative files. Materials include administrative files, applications, correspondence, printed materials, publicity files, and other records related to organizing and managing exhibitions. The files of the Exhibition Committee are also found here.

Other series which document activities held by, or held at, the League include Functions and Events series and Publicity Files series. Found is correspondence, printed materials, press releases, schedules, and other administrative documents created in organizing events such as dinners, lectures, receptions, balls, and outings. The Records of Other Organizations includes records relating to organizations that had business with the League, often regarding events, meetings, and exhibitions held at the League. Represented here are some records of the American Institute of Architects (A.I.A.) and the National Sculpture Society (N.S.S.).

Correspondence includes miscellaneous correspondence arranged alphabetically by subject or name, and collated correspondence arranged chronologically. Most of the chronological correspondence appears to be Secretaries' files. The materials in the Miscellaneous series seem to have been separated from their original files, or were never filed properly. Therefore, materials and contents are similar to those found in other series, such as correspondence, administrative records, some financial records, and handwritten notes.

Black and white photographs, a handful of colored photographs, nearly 350 lantern slides, and negatives of exhibitions, buildings, events, and portraits are found in the Photographic Materials series.

Sixteen scrapbooks include eight scrapbooks of clippings from 1880s-1960s, and seven scrapbooks of notices and printed materials from 1925-1930. Also found is a scrapbook of signatures of event attendees, a clippings scrapbook compiled by Hamilton M. Wright, and a scrapbook of the Archeological Institute of America.

There are frequently similar and related materials in multiple series, as is indicated in the series' descriptions. The records may originally have been arranged by file owner (committees, secretary, etc.), then by League season (roughly May - April). Most series include a handful of folders in which the original folder title indicates the file owner and League season (i.e. Secretary 1938-1939).
Historical Note:
Modeling the organization's name after the Art Students League of New York, the Architectural League of New York was founded in New York City in 1881 by a group of architects who wished to gather and discuss architecture and its relationship to the arts. The group elected D.W. Willard as the first President of the League and they began gathering regularly to discuss and critique each other's sketches and hold competitions. The organization grew quickly and soon the League rented a room in a building on 14th Street between University Place and Fifth Avenue.

However, by the mid-1880s the founders and more active League members left New York, and membership began to falter. The League was reorganized in 1886, expanding membership beyond professional architects, and incorporated in 1888 with 166 members. In 1889, the League joined with the Art Students League of New York and the Society of American Artists to form the American Fine Arts Society. Thus, in 1892 the three organizations were able to erect a building at 215 West 57th Street where the League remained until 1927 when it moved to 115 East 40th Street.

The League was run by the Executive Committee and its officers, elected every two years. The beginning of each League season kicked off with an annual dinner in the spring. The League also formed numerous committees to organize activities and manage administrative tasks. Noteworthy committees include the Current Work Committee, House Committee, Finance Committee, Exhibition Committee, Membership Committee, and Scholarships and Special Awards Committee.

The League's interdisciplinary approach to architecture and the arts was expressed through sponsored forums and discussions with architects and artists. From the League's beginning, the Current Work Committee was established to organize educational forums for members. Recognition of achievement was awarded by an Annual Exhibition from the late 1880s until 1938. In 1950, the League began awarding the annual National Gold Medal Exhibition in various fields, including landscape architecture, engineering, and sculpture. Additionally, the League awarded numerous other scholarships each year. Architects, artists, and arts-related organizations could also rent space in the League building to hold meetings, discussions, and exhibitions.

The League admitted its first female member in 1934. Notable members of the League included Arnold W. Brunner (President, 1903-1905), Cass Gilbert (President, 1913-1915), Philip Johnson, Robert A.M. Stern, and Russell Sturgis (President, 1889-1893).

The Architectural League of New York continues to provide educational opportunities and scholarships to students and professionals.

The Miscellaneous series includes a variety of materials dated between 1894 and 1983. Consumers' Research contains bulletins produced by this organization between 1948 and 1963. These bulletins with other enclosures or attachments are relevant to the topics discussed in the letters and correspondence between representatives of Sohmer, Consumers' Research, and Consumers Union during the years 1941-1963.

The Correspondence between Harry J. Sohmer, Sr. and F.J. Schlink of Consumers' Research between August 13, 1941 and February 24, 1942 reveals that Baldwin Piano Company illegally used Consumers' Research in their advertising and drew misleading comparisons among pianos. Ironically, the correspondence of May 7 and May 9, 1963 between Robert L. Smith of Consumers Union and Harry J. Sohmer, Sr. reveals the unsubstantiated accusation that Sohmer was using the 1941 Consumers' Research reports to promote sales. Harry Sohmer denied this by insisting he did not possess a copy of this report and closed by asking for one.

The brochures of the Lake Placid Club in New York were probably collected for advertising purposes. The Club was a customer of Sohmer & Co. and the company often included the Club's name in its brocures for the promotion of Sohmer pianos.

The Piano Examinations of 1961 1962 are appraisal reports of pianos of various brand names. The report describes the piano, defines or diagnoses the main problem with it, and indicates a price for repairing it. Information about School Pianos includes letters with construction and sound quality specifications and a handbook entitled "Wood Colors and Kinds."

Contains Gordon Hendricks's collection of clippings, correspondence, and research notes, and other professional papers related to his books and articles on motion picture history. Includes files on Edison, William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, and other pioneers in motion picture inventions.
Scope and Contents note:
This large collection contains correspondence, notes, and copies of documents from many repositories, which were used as research materials for Hendricks's publications in this field, as well as black-and-white photographs. Copies of photographs come from the Edison National Historic Site archives, Eastman House, the Smithsonian, and other museums. Gordon Hendricks stored his research material in grey binders, orange manuscript boxes, clay-colored folders, and black binders, hence the grey, orange, clay and black series. It is not certain whether this arrangement represented an identification or coding system related to separate projects or whether it simply reflects the chronology of his work through a succession of filing and boxing systems.

Hendricks's arrangement has been retained generally, and the series arrangement of the collection reflects Hendricks's original groupings. Series 1 consists of Lantern slides, Series 2 of material found in grey binders, Series 3 of material found in orange boxes, Series 4 of material in clay-colored folders, Series 5 of material in black binders and Series 6 is the miscellaneous series. [These groupings have been identified, as David Burgevin conducted an inventory while the collection was in its original containers.]

These papers contain much correspondence and other materials relating to Hendricks's books in the field of motion picture history, such as copies of manuscripts, and galley proofs. Photographs: Graphic materials included in the collection, such as photographs, frequently are not original but are copies of items from repositories in which Hendricks did research. However, there are a few noteworthy original items, such as examples of motion picture flip books (one partly intact, plus loose fragments from this flip book and others).
Biographical/Historical note:
Hendricks was an art historian who wrote works on painters such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Eakins, as well as on early motion picture history, including analyses of inventors of apparatus and technology; in his book THE EDISON MOTION PICTURE MYTH he showed how Edison's assistant, W. K. L. Dickson, and other inventors actually were responsible for the development of cinematic technology for which Edison unfairly took credit. Hendricks apparently was born in 1917 and died in 1980.

129 black-and-white photographs, many copy prints used as illustrations in Gordon Hendricks books, and other images of early motion picture apparatus are in the Gordon Hendricks Collection in the Photographic History Division. The Collection also includes 240 glass plate negatives, which appear to have been taken in Europe, and a binder of contact prints of the negatives.
