17 digital images and 1 digital file which includes a planting list and copy of Shipman's planting plan.
General:
The original 1930's garden design by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman (1869-1950) still can be discerned in the mature trees and sculpted hedges of the 5.82-acre estate. The property was intended as a winter sporting retreat for the original owner so, given the economic uncertainty of the time, an ornate display of summer blooming plants was deemed unnecessary. The brick Georgian revival house built in 1930 and the landscaped grounds reflected the Country Place era – an emulation of an English country estate that would have existed for generations. The entire property is enclosed by a stucco high wall with an iron front gate and a wooden door inserted in wall in the 1950's for access to a private supper club on the adjacent property.

The level property has expansive lawns punctuated or bordered with camellias, hollies, tea olives, native magnolias and loblolly pine. Shipman defined and enclosed spaces but in a more naturalistic way on this property. Osmanthus fragrans x fortune (tea olive) border the lawn along the drive. A shaped boxwood hedge defines the walkway to the front door. Some of the varieties that were popular when the estate was planted are no longer available commercially, and a Carolina cherry laurel allée was replaced with azaleas as the original plant is invasive. Azalea drifts that flower in early spring replace the original design of viola, vinca, and spring bulbs. Crepe myrtles, nandina and magnolia grown at the entrance to the property. Behind the house there is a simple rectangular pool, a later addition but in Shipman's style. There are a dressage ring, stables, and grooms' cottages along with three paddocks on this polo player's property.
Persons associated with garden's design include: Julian Peabody (architect, 1929-1931) and Ellen Shipman (landscape architect (1930-1931).

Summary:
This collection contains over 37,000 35mm slides, 3,000 glass lantern slides and garden files that may include descriptive information, photocopied articles (from journals, newspapers, or books), planting lists, correspondence, brochures, landscape plans and drawings. Garden files were compiled by Garden Club of America (GCA) members for most of the gardens included in the collection. Some gardens have been photographed over the course of several decades; others only have images from a single point in time. In addition to images of American gardens, there are glass lantern slides of the New York Flower Show (1941-1951) and trips that GCA members took to other countries, including Mexico (1937), Italy, Spain, Japan (1935), France (1936), England (1929), and Scotland.

A number of the slides are copies of historic images from outside repositories including horticultural and historical societies or from horticultural books and publications. The GCA made a concerted effort in the mid-1980s to acquire these images in order to increase its documentation of American garden history. Because of copyright considerations, use of these particular images may be restricted.
Biographical/Historical note:
The Garden Club of America was established in 1913 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when the Garden Club of Philadelphia and eleven other garden clubs met to create a national garden club. Its purpose is to foster the knowledge and love of gardening and to restore and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and gardening and conservation efforts. The GCA was incorporated in Delaware in 1923, with its headquarters established in New York City. Today, local clubs are organized under twelve regional zones. The GCA continues its tradition of hosting flower shows and publishing material related to gardening in the United States.

The GCA's glass lantern slides were used by The GCA for presentations and lectures about notable gardens throughout the United States dating back to colonial times. An effort was made in the late 1980s, in preparation of the 75th anniversary of the Garden Club of America's founding, to collect the disbursed slides. These slides were to eventually form the Slide Library of Notable American Parks and Gardens. The informational value of this collection is extensive since a number of images of the more than 4,500 gardens represented show garden designs that have changed over time or no longer exist. While the majority of images document a range of designed upper and upper-middle class gardens throughout the U.S., the scope of the collection is expanding as volunteers photograph and document contemporary gardens including community and vernacular gardens.

The gardens illustrate the design work of dozens of landscape architects including Marian Coffin, Beatrix Farrand, Lawrence Halprin, Hare & Hare, Umberto Innocenti, Gertrude Jekyll, Jens Jensen, Warren Manning, the Olmsted Brothers, Charles Platt, Ellen Biddle Shipman, and Fletcher Steele. Because of their proximity to the gardens, works of notable architects and sculptors may also be featured in the images.

Administrative History.:
The Smithsonian Institution was founded in 1846. Although there was no department of anthropology until the creation of the Section of Ethnology in 1879, anthropological materials were part of the Smithsonian's collection from its foundation. The Section of Ethnology was created to care for the rapidly growing collection. In 1881, the United States National Museum was established. Soon thereafter, in 1883, it was broken up into divisions, including the Division of Anthropology. In 1904, Physical Anthropology was added to the Division.

The Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) was created in 1879 as a research unit of the Smithsonian, separating research from collections care. However, during the 1950s, research became a higher priority for the Department of Anthropology and, in 1965, the BAE was merged with the Department of Anthropology to create the Office of Anthropology, and the BAE's archives became the National Anthropological Archives (NAA).

In 1967, the United States National Museum was broken up into three separate museums: the Musuem of History and Technology (now the National Museum of American History), the National Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). The Office of Anthropology was included in NMNH and was renamed the Department of Anthropology in 1968.

New divisions were added to the Department, including the Human Studies Film Archives (HSFA) in 1981, the Research Institute on Immigration and Ethnic Studies (RIIES) in 1982, and the Repatriation Office in 1993. In 1983, the Smithsonian opened the Museum Support Center (MSC) in Suitland, Maryland, as offsite housing for collections with specialized storage facilities and conservation labs.

The Department of Anthropology is currently the largest department within NMNH. It has three curatorial divisions (Ethnology, Archaeology, and Biological Anthropology) and its staff includes curators, research assistants, program staff, collections specialists, archivists, repatriation tribal liaisons, and administrative specialists. It has a number of outreach and research arms, including the Repatriation Office, Recovering Voices, Human Origins, and the Arctic Studies Center.

The Museum is home to one of the world's largest anthropology collections, with over three million specimens in archaeology, ethnology, and human skeletal biology. The NAA is the Smithsonian's oldest archival repository, with materials that reflect over 150 years of anthropological collecting and fieldwork. The HSFA is the only North American archive devoted exclusively to the collection and preservation of anthropological film and video.

Date:
1985-1990
Summary:
This collection consists of the transcripts for the Glennen-Webb-Seamans Project (GWS), which examines various aspects of NASA management practices during the Apollo program. This project constitutes one of several oral history projects conducted within the Department of Space History, NASM. The principal investigator for the GWS was Martin Collins and the interview set contains 193 hours of interviews with 22 individuals. The central thread of this collection was the problem of configuring new political relations among the space sciences and sponsors. The following individuals were interviewed: J. Leland Atwood; Delmer Bradshaw; James Burnett; Paul Demitriades; Edward Doll; Peter Downey; Brian Duff; James Elms; James Fletcher; Robert Gilruth; T. Keith Glennan; Donald Jacobs; Ruben Mettler; Mark Miller; George Mueller; Samuel Phillips; Simon Ramo; Robert Seamans; Willis Shapley; Abe Silverstein; David Soergel; Harrison Storms; James Webb; Thorton Wilson; and Herbert York.
Scope and Contents:
The Glennan-Webb-Seamans Project Interviews consist of 193 hours of interviews with 26 individuals. The audio cassette tapes of these interviews have yet to be remastered and, due to their fragility, are unavailable to researchers. Transcripts are available to researchers, though there are restrictions placed on a number of them. A NASM staff member will advise the patron which transcripts are available for copying or viewing and how to order copies of transcripts and/or CDs.
Arrangement:
The Glennan-Webb-Seamans (GWS) Project Interviews are arranged alphabetically by interviewee. Boxes 1-11 (Series 1) contain the interviews on audio cassette tapes. These tapes have yet to be remastered and, due to their fragility, are not available to researchers.

Boxes 12-16 (Series 2) contain the transcripts for these cassette tapes. Most of these transcripts are available to researchers, though restrictions are placed on a small number of them. Transcripts with user restrictions are highlighted in bold type.
Biographical / Historical:
This collection contains the interviews of the Glennan-Webb-Seamans Project (GWS). These interviews analyze a variety of facets revolving around NASA management and its handling of contractors during the Apollo program. The individuals listed as part of this collection's name refer to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) first two administrators and the agency's deputy administrator during much of the 1960s. The principal (though, by no means the only) interviewer for this project was Martin Collins and the interview set consists of 193 hours of interviews with 26 individuals. Summary:
A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. The Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Agriculture forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Subseries 1.1: Subject Categories. The Subject Categories subseries is divided into 470 subject categories based on those created by Mr. Warshaw. These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. An overview to the entire Warshaw collection is available here: Warshaw Collection of Business Americana
Scope and Contents note:
This material consists primarily of trade catalogues, printed advertisements, scattered correspondence on letterhead stationery, price lists, bills/receipts, addresses, envelopes, advertising cards, reports, manuals and memorandum books, fair tickets, lithographs, photographs, calendars, descriptive circulars, photographic postcards, handbills, leaflets, receipt/credit books, price lists, almanacs, sales contracts, product manuals, periodicals and order forms from manufacturers and dealers of agricultural implements necessary for the management of the farm.

The different types of products include ploughs, fertilizers, harrows, seed sowers, scythes, elevators binders, hay rakes, mowers, sickle hooks, reaping hooks, reapers, corn shellers, rotary spades, seed-saws, sickle hooks, reap[ing hooks, reapers, corn shellers, rotary spades, pumps and scrapers. Many of the companies sold other products such as hydraulic cement, cedar & willow ware, brooms, brushes, flower pots, plant trellises, leather belting, sleighs, sleds, lumber, woodenware, doors, blinds, sashes, blinds, salt, lime.

There are numerous illustrations throughout this collection. A number of these images are of agricultural implements. Such tools are primarily in trade catalogues and include descriptions of type, function, dimensions and price. Agricultural implements are also included among the engravings illustrating farm tools used in 1790. Other images include people working in the field and factory scenes. There are numerous images of children particularly on advertising cards and calendars from some of the manufacturers and dealers.

A substantial amount of material from experimental stations can also be found among the materials. Such materials consist of notices and correspondence from experimental stations located in New Brunswick (New Jersey), Orono (Maine), Wooster (Ohio), Geneva (New York), Amherst (Massachusetts), Ithaca (New York), Indianapolis (Indiana) and Corvallis (Oregon).

Researchers interested in materials from agricultural societies, organizations and associations will also find information in this collection. Such organizations include the American Agricultural Association, Livestock Society of America, United States Agricultural Society and smaller groups formed on the state level. Most of the information is related to annual fairs.

Publications pertaining to agriculture are in a variety of articles, pamphlets, reports, bulletins, periodicals and journals. Discussions on farming in the United States as well as other countries are among the publications. Mr. Warshaw collected seventy-seven articles from a publication titled The Story of Farming which examines issues such as "Inspection of Cattle on an Egyptian Farm", "Early Farmers in Europe", "A Medieval Farmyard." "In a New England Farming District," "Farming in the French Aids", "Plowing in Portugal", and "Machinery on a Russian Farm." Unfortunately there are no dates on any of the articles.

Agricultural journals and periodicals that were published in different sizes during their existence are among these materials and can also be found in another section of the Warshaw Collection. The American Agriculturist, Wisconsin Agriculturist an Farmer and the Cultivator and Country Gentlemen are also stored in flat oversize boxes due to their size.

Manufacturers and distributors of farming implements are in boxes one through fifteen and are arranged in alphabetical order by name of company. Patents, general images, import/export documents and legal documents are also in box fifteen. Box sixteen through twenty-one contains related publications and are organized by type and then alphabetically by name of publication.

Series 3: Isadore Warshaw Personal Papers

Series 4: Photographic Reference Material
Provenance:
Agriculture is a portion of the Business Ephemera Series of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Accession AC0060 purchased from Isadore Warshaw in 1967. Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.
