The scattered papers of Gladys Kashdin measure 1.2 linear feet and date from 1942 to 1978. Found are research files and interviews focusing on Abstract Expressionism and abstract expressionist artists including sound recordings of interviews with H. Harvard Arnason, James Brooks, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Conrad Marca-Relli, and Robert Motherwell.
Scope and Contents:
The scattered papers of Gladys Kashdin measure 1.2 linear feet and date from 1942 to 1978. Found are research files and interviews focusing on Abstract Expressionism and abstract expressionist artists including sound recordings of interviews with H. Harvard Arnason, James Brooks, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Conrad Marca-Relli, and Robert Motherwell.
Arrangement:
Due to the small size of this collection the papers are arranged as one series.
Biographical / Historical:
Gladys Kashdin (1921-2014) was an art historian, painter, and educator in New York City, New York, and later Florida. In addition to an extensive career showing her artwork she was a scholar of Abstract Expressionsim and received her PhD from Florida State University. Kashdin taught at the University of South Florida for twenty-five years and was designated Professor Emeritus on retirement.

Series includes research files for and interviews of abstract expressionist artists and general research on Abstract Expressionism. Research files include Kashdin's handwritten notes, clippings, and exhibition printed materials. Also found are sound recordings of Kashdin's interviews of artists, recorded in spring 1965 in New York City. Subjects include H. Harvard Arnason, James Brooks, Adoplh Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Conrad Marca-Relli, and Robert Motherwell. Also found is a microfilm reel of William Chapin Seitz's thesis Abstract-Expressionist Painting in America: An Interpretation Based on the Work and Thought of Six Key Figures.
