The series includes 22 annotated calendars documenting Solberg's appointments and activities for nearly 30 years, artist statements, donations of artwork, jury panel files, lecture and workshop material, letters of recommendation written by Solberg, material on Solberg collected by Vicki Halper, teaching material, and 2 books of weaving samples.

Also included is a file for Jack Stoops Film Productions containing project material for a film on Solberg and personal correspondence between Stoops, Solberg, and Dwinnell-Smith; drafts, photographs, a proposal, correspondence, and other related material for Solberg's book Inventive Jewelry-Making; and a general business file containing price lists, receipts, and other material. There are files for the exhibitions Findings: The Jewelry of Ramona Solberg, Objects: USA, and the Philadelphia Craft Show, and research material on beads that includes a paper by Solberg, writings on jewelry as personal adornment, and notes on beads of different cultures. Instructional materials consist of instructions on jewelry making along with illustrations. Travel files contain printed material on local arts, travel ephemera, and some photographs.

Scope and Contents:
On June 20, 1992, the Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture's Juneteenth Celebration was held at the Anacostia Museum. Museum Director Steven Newsome, Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly, and other civic leaders greeted guests with speeches. Musical and dance performances included a capella groups In Process and REVERB; go-go bands Junkyard Band and Chuck Brown/Soul Searchers; doo-wop singers The Orioles; reggae band Third Eye; Melvin Deal West African Dancers; and St. Teresa of Avila Choir. Children's activities included games, such as balloon toss and sack race. Storytellers Rita Cox and Jamal Koram, puppeteer Schroeder Cherry, and Happy the Clown also performed. Arts and crafts demonstrations included hair braiding, kente weaving, tie dyeing, jewelry making, doll making, cartooning, and quilting by Daughter of Dorcas. The day also included a Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad Reenactment by Kwelismith and a poetry reading 'The Spoken Word.'

On June 12, 1993, the Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture's Juneteenth Celebration was held at the Anacostia Museum. Museum Director Steven Newsome and civic leaders greeted guests with speeches. Musical and dance performances included Universal Messengers of Music, Pennvisions Dance Company, New World Percussion Ensemble, Zulu Nation Hip Hop Dancers, Frankie Addison and the Front Line Jazz Ensemble, Andrew Cacho African Drummers and Dancers, and Nap Turner. Children's activities included storyteller Joy Love, Happy the Clown, and games, such as balloon toss and sack race. Arts and crafts demonstrations included hair braiding, tie dyeing, jewelry making, papier mache, African drumming and dancing, and quilting by Daughter of Dorcas. Author Jill Nelson read from her book, Volunteer Slavery: My Authentic Negro Experience. The theme for the Juneteenth Celebration 1993 was Music and Motion. In addition to performances during the celebration, the recording includes footage of celebration preparations, and interviews with Steven Newsome and Zora Martin-Felton about the importance of the Anacostia Museum hosting a Juneteenth Celebration.

Photographic Materials and Motion Picture Film

Scope and Contents:
The series consists of photographic prints, digital prints, negatives and transparencies, motion picture film strips, and a large quantity of slides. The majority of the series documents Solberg's extensive travels and works of art by Solberg and other craft artists. Some sets of slides were collected by Solberg for use during talks and lectures, as well as for her book Inventive Jewelry-Making and other projects. Other photographic materials are personal snapshots, portraits of Solberg, Solberg in her studio, and Solberg in her Women's Army Corps uniform. Also included in the series are approximately 40 film strips containing footage of travel in various countries and works of art.

Descriptive Entry:
These records are the official minutes of the Board. They are compiled at the direction of the Secretary of the Smithsonian, who is also secretary to the Board, after approval by the Regents' Executive Committee and by the Regents themselves. The minutes are edited, not a verbatim account of proceedings. For reasons unknown, there are no manuscript minutes for the period from 1857 through 1890; and researchers must rely on printed minutes published in the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution instead. Minutes are transferred regularly from the Secretary's Office to the Archives. Minutes less than 15 years old are closed to researchers. Indexes exist for the period from 1907 to 1946 and can be useful.
Historical Note:
The Smithsonian Institution was created by authority of an Act of Congress approved August 10, 1846. The Act entrusted direction of the Smithsonian to a body called the Establishment, composed of the President; the Vice President; the Chief Justice of the United States; the secretaries of State, War, Navy, Interior, and Agriculture; the Attorney General; and the Postmaster General. In fact, however, the Establishment last met in 1877, and control of the Smithsonian has always been exercised by its Board of Regents. The membership of the Regents consists of the Vice President and the Chief Justice of the United States; three members each of the Senate and House of Representatives; two citizens of the District of Columbia; and seven citizens of the several states, no two from the same state. (Prior to 1970 the category of Citizen Regents not residents of Washington consisted of four members). By custom the Chief Justice is Chancellor. The office was at first held by the Vice President. However, when Millard Fillmore succeeded to the presidency on the death of Zachary Taylor in 1851, Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney was chosen in his stead. The office has always been filled by the Chief Justice since that time.

An interview of Mary Lee Hu conducted 2009 March 18-19, by Mija Riedel, for the Archives of American Art's Nanette L. Laitman Documentation Project for Craft and Decorative Arts in America, at Hu's home and studio, in Seattle, Washington.
Hu speaks of growing up outside Cleveland, Ohio; her early interest in making objects; attending the Lawrence Art Center camp in Kansas at the age of 16 where she first experimented with metals; her like of working with tools in order to create something; taking metal smith classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art during high school; attending Miami University in Ohio for two years followed by two years an Cranbrook Academy of Art; working as a TA with L. Brent Kington at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale; her collaborative work in both textiles and metals while at Carbondale which lead to her first experimentation in weaving silver wire; creating a body of work for her Master's thesis in which all the pieces were woven wire; various works, their origins, when, where and why they were created, including her Neckpiece, Choker, Bracelet, Brooch and Ring series; her aesthetic interest in patterns, line and positive/negative space; a limited interest in and use of color in her work; the transition from silver to gold wire; a progressively larger interest in the history of jewelry and body adornment which eventually became a lecture at the University of Washington, where she taught for 26 years; numerous trips around the world to countries such as China, Tibet, Nepal, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia; a strong interest in ethnic and native jewelry/body adornment practices; the various purposes which jewelry can serve in society; her involvement with the Society of North American Goldsmiths and the American Craft Council; her technique based teaching practices; the role that modern technology plays in teaching, learning, and making jewelry; the lack of support and funds for metals programs in universities around the country; her library, which includes aver 2,000 books about the history of jewelry and body adornment; her collection of jewelry from around the world; her want to create beautiful and functional jewelry; the public and private aspects to jewelry and it's role in museums; current projects and the importance to maintain interest of metals in younger generations. Hu also recalls Gary Turner, Hans Christensen, Otto Dingeldein, Heikki Seppä, Hero Kielman, Phil Fike, Patti Warashina, Gary Noffke, Elliott Pujol, Chonghi Choo, Daphne Farafo, Vicki Halper, Ron Ho, Miye Matsukata, Alma Eikermann, Mark Baldridge, Kurt Matzdorf, Eleanor Moty, Fred Fenster, John Marshall, James McMurray, and others.
Biographical / Historical:
Mary Lee Hu (1943- ) is a metalsmith in Seattle, Washington. Smith was educated at Cranbrook Academy of Art and Southern Illinois University. She teaches at the University of Washington.

Scope and Contents:
The papers of jewelry designer and metalsmith Miye Matsukata measure 13.45 linear feet and date from circa 1900 to 1982, with the bulk of the material dating from 1964 to 1981.The papers include correspondence, interviews, journals, writings and lectures, exhibition files, Janiye business records, printed materials, scrapbooks, artwork, sketchbooks, and photographic materials that document Matsukata's work as a jeweler and owner of Janiye, an atelier located in Boston, Massachusetts.

Correspondence is with family, James Hubbard, various customers, galleries, and colleagues. Interviews include recordings of Matsukata and Takashi Oka, Judy Hickey and Miyo, and two interviews from 1968.

Eleven journals contain Matsukata's writings about her work, travel experiences, impressions of Mikimoto, and include some sketches. Writings and lectures consists of five appointment books; biographical statements and resumes; essays; lecture recordings, manuscripts, and slides; twelve memo books; notes; two travel itinerary books; and writings by James Hubbard that include an essay about Matsukata.

Exhibition files consist of correspondence, price and invitations lists, loan forms, and drafts for jewelry shows at the Art Asia Gallery, Fitchburg Art Museum, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Principia College, and other galleries. Business files for Janiye include donations, financial and legal material, inventory books, publicity files, and sales records; and client and vendor files containing invoices, correspondence, and special order details for works produced by Matsukata and other jewelers at Janiye.

Printed materials include booklets, clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, an invitation, press releases, and Janiye sales catalogs. Two scrapbooks feature clippings and sketches of dinnerware, and early brochures and photographs of Janiye.

Artwork consists of sketches of jewelry, dinnerware, mountains, and landscapes. Additionally, 47 sketchbooks of travel, jewelry, and dinnerware are found in the collection. Photographic materials include photographs, negatives, slides, and several glass slides depicting Matsukata, her family, Janiye, jewelry and dinnerware, and travel.

Biographical / Historical:
Miye Matsukata (1922-1981) was a Japanese American jewelry designer and metalsmith based in Boston, Massachusetts. She worked at her jewelry firm Janiye in Boston from 1950 to her death.

Matsukata was born in Japan to Shokuma and Miyo Matsukata and had four sisters named Haru, Naka, Taneko "Tane," and Mari. After coming to the United States in 1940, Matsukata attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, graduating in 1944. Afterwards, she attended The Museum School in Boston. In 1950 she established Janiye, a jewelry atelier, with former classmates Naomi Katz Harris and Janice Whipple Williams. The name Janiye is a combination of the three co-owners' names. By 1958, Matsukata became the sole owner of the company with James Hubbard, a stone cutter, serving as business manager and agent. Nancy Michel, Alexandra Watkins, and Yoshiko Yamamoto became the leading team of jewelers to execute Matsukata's designs.

Matsukata traveled extensively to Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Peru, India, western and central Europe, and to Scandinavia after winning a scholarship in 1950. She also spent a substantial amount of time in Japan, especially during her collaboration with the Japanese pearl company Mikimoto. Her work was inspired by the places she visited and she often documented the sources of her inspiration through her writings and sketches.

Matsukata died in 1981 in Boston. Janiye remained open after her death with Michel and Watkins as the new owners.

Provenance:
The Miye Matsukata papers were donated in 1984 by Mrs. Edwin O. Reischauer, Matsukata's sister and in 2008 and 2017 by Ann Hubbard Gaddis, the sister of Matsukata's business partner and heir, James Hubbard.
