Scope and Contents:
Collection consists of Allison and Marek Jablonko research films on the Maring of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, as well as a television series made in 1980 from that footage for the Italian general audience. A video oral history with visual anthropologist Paul Byers, conducted in 2000 by Allison Jablonko, Yanick Geffroy, and Martino Nicolet is also part of the collection.

Supplementary material: associated texts, still film, sound recordings, annotations (recorded narratives), field notes.

Scope and Contents:
Full film record on the Maring of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Footage documents daily life among the Funggai clan whose territory lies at the eastern end of the Simbai Valley, Madang District. Footage focuses on family life and the organization of Funggai hamlets, ritual cycles related to the kaiko dance, crops and food preparation, material crafts including bilum making and hafting stone axes, storytelling, dance, and soccer matches.

Edited video constructed from a video oral history with visual anthropologist Paul Byers.

Interview was conducted by Allison Jablonko, Yanick Geffroy and Martino Nicolet over four days in July 2000.

Edited video focuses on photography, visual research and origins of anthropology. Interview was filmed with two cameras in Paul Byers apartment.

Discussion includes the human impulse to label including the label of visual anthropology; photographers as voyeurs or flaneurs who have the ability to be in and outside as needed; growth of photography's aesthetics and its impact on the use of photography for research; analysis of photography for the study of non-verbal communication; Margaret Mead's innate ability to connect people; Gregory Bateson's question to God; Raymond Birdwhistell's work in kinesics; and attending conferences.

Video also uses some of Byers' photographs to demonstrate points being discussed.
