Scope and Contents:
Charles Freer purchased the two paintings in Detroit from missionary, educator and writer, Isaac Taylor Headland (185-1942). In addition to payment for the two paintings, there is an additional voucher for travel from Pennsylvania to Detroit.

Biographical / Historical:
Isaac Taylor Headland was born on in Freedom, PA. In 1888 he graduated with an A.B. from Mount Union College He arrived in Beijing in 1890 as a Methodist missionary. Later he worked as professor of science at Peking University. His wife, Marian Sinclair, was a doctor who served as physician to aristocratic women in Beijing, including the Empress Dowager Cixi. Headland wrote extensively on Chinese history and culture.
According to Freer's diary, Headland arrived in Detroit on September 28th and left on October 1st. Likely, Headland brought the paint
