Scope and Contents:
The calendar consists of 171 pictographs on heavy card stock. Each page contains two to four pictographs, arranged top to bottom and left to right. The calendar entries cover the period 1825 - 1921. A red diamond is used to signify winter and a green or yellow bar to signify summer. A depiction of the forked Medicine Lodge pole often accompanies the symbol for summer. No information is known about the original production of this calendar. However, the pictures are a close match to a tracing that Wilbur S. Nye made in the 1920s of a calendar on cloth belonging to Jimmy Quitone, although arranged in a different format, and this may be considered a variant of the Quitone calendar. Nye's tracing is in the collection of the Fort Sill Museum in Oklahoma together with his notes about the version that he examined. He recorded that while Quitone owned the calendar when he made the tracing, it had been produced by Johnny Anko and Hauvahte. Huvahte may be an alternate rendering of Habate, or Haba. Nye believed that the calendar was destroyed when the Quitone home burned in the 1930s.
Biographical / Historical:
Jimmy Quitone (Wolf Tail) was one of the elders from whom W.S. Nye recorded much information about Kiowa history. According to Nye, he was the father of George Hunt and Guy Quitone. Hugh Corwin provides anecdotal information about Quitone, including a note that he died in 1956 at the age of 101. For additional biographical information see: W.S. This collection is comprised of a census of the Oglala Sioux at the Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota, taken on June 30, 1904 by Indian agent Major John R. Brennan. The census consists of 938 handwritten entries on 36 leaves.
Biographical / Historical:
The Pine Ridge Reservation was originally part of the Great Sioux Reservation established by the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, which encompassed approximately 60 million acres of parts of South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. In 1876, the U.S. government violated the treaty of 1868 by opening up 7.7 million acres of the Black Hills to homesteaders and private interests. In 1889 the government divided the remaining area of Great Sioux Reservation into seven separate reservations, including the Pine Ridge Reservation. Major John R. Brennan (d. 1919) was superintendent of Pine Ridge from 1900 to 1917.

Twenty drawings in a commercial exercise book that has been rebound. The book had been sewn into a second cover prior to its acquisition by the Smithsonian. This second cover was removed when the book was rebound. It is still with the manuscript. The drawings depict hunting, courtship, dance, social gatherings, Indian scouts, mounted and dismounted warriors, and part of the Kiowa Sun Dance. The inside of the front cover is inscribed, "Capt Pratt USA", "By the Indians", "By the Indians incarcerated in Fort Marion St. Augustine in 1876", "Engaged in the Custer Massacre", "Care of Capt Pratt in charge assisted by the following ladies Mrs Linethurst, Mrs Gibbs - Mrs S' Mother St Augustine Mrs Kingsly Gibbs aunt Mrs Valentine Phila Miss Reed", "Carlisle was the outcome of Capt Pratt's efforts assisted by Mrs Kingsly Gibbs of St Augustine". The back cover is inscribed "Works of the Indians while in prison in Fort Marion St Augustine Florida/ after the Custer Massacre in care of Capt Pratt/ The founder of Carlisle/ These Indians finally taken there for housing and taming/ by the Government/ under the care of Capt Pratt USA". In addition to the inscription, the back cover bears the image of a man wearing a breechcloth, which was scratched into its surface. The name "ZOTOM" appears in stencil block letters on the back cover and the inside of the front cover. Although Zotom was a noted Kiowa artist, it is not clear that he is responsible for the drawings. Candace Greene notes that they are unlike his later work and early documented examples of his drawing style have not been identified.
Biographical / Historical:
Fort Marion, also known as Castillo de San Marco, is a stone fortress in St. Augustine, Florida. Between 1875 and 1878, seventy-two prisoners from the southern plains were incarcerated in the fort. Captain Richard Pratt supervised the prisoners during their incarceration at Fort Marion. The prisoners consisted of 27 Kiowas, 33 Cheyennes, 9 Comanches, 2 Arapahos, and a single Caddo. With the exception of one Cheyenne woman, all the prisoners were men. They had been accused of participating in the recent Red River War, earlier hostilities, or both. With the exception of the wife and daughter of one of the Comanche men, the prisoners families were not allowed to accompany them to Fort Marion. This collection is comprised of thirteen (13) original recordings of American Indian songs and dances, recorded on two-minute Edison Blanks wax cylinders. Eight of the cylinders are in pristine condition. Two are cracked and cannot be played. Contents are marked on individual cylinders in pencil or black ink: 1) The last Owl Dance; 2) Two flute songs; 3) Sioux flute 2 loves; 4) Sioux love song; 5) Kiowa love songs; 6) Sirecha Dance; 7) Flute love lullaby; 8) Flute on the bridge; 9) War dance; 10) Buffalo dance; 11) Song before fight; 12) Indian flute. a love song, played by Turkey Leggs. (Cheyene); 13) Owl Dance song.

Lithographs from History of the Indian Tribes of North America by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall. The lithographs in this set are of Chon-Mon-I-Case, an Otto Half Chief; Ma-Has-Kah or White Cloud, an Ioway Chief; Micanopy, a Seminole Chief; Naw-Kaw, a Winnebago Chief; Nea-Math-La, a Seminole Chief; Ne Sou A Quot, a Fox Chief; Qu-Ta-Wa-Pea, a Shawnee Chief; Thayendanegea, the Great Captain of Six Nations; Wakechai, a Saukie Chief; Wa-Na-Ta, Grand Chief of the Sioux; and Wa-Pel-La, Chief of the Musquakees. Ten are original hand-colored lithographs while the lithograph of Wa-Pel-La is a mounted reprint from 1965. At least four of the lithographs were hanging in Room 59-A in the Natural History building until 1976.
Biographical / Historical:
Painter Charles Bird King was commissioned by Thomas Loraine McKenney, superintendent of Indian trade (1816-1822) and later the superintendent of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (1824-1830), to create a government collection of portraits of prominent American Indians visiting Washington, DC. The portraits were reproduced as hand-colored lithographs and published in McKenney and James Hall's three volume work, History of the Indian Tribes of North America. The first volume was published in 1837, with the last volume published in 1844. The paintings, which were transferred to the Smithsonian in 1858, were on display in the museum when they were destroyed in a fire in 1865. Only a few were rescued from the fire. Consequently, the McKenney and Hall lithographs are the only records of King's portraits.

Scope and Contents note:
Copies made from a photograph album compiled by Robert Burnett that appears to relate to three periods. A few photographs dated around 1910-1912 were likely received from Burnett's family and depict family members, ranchers, tipis, and people gathered for White River Frontier Days. Other photographs show Burnette and friends while he was in high school and then in the US Marine Corps during World War II. Many of the later photographs date around 1961-1964, when Burnette was Executive Secretary of the National Congress of American Indians; some of these depict Burnette and other American Indians with John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, George McGovern, and Stewart L. Udall.
Biographical/Historical note:
Robert Burnette (1926-1984) was an American Indian civil rights leader, Tribal Chair of the Rosebud Sioux, and Executive Secretary of the National Congress of American Indians. He is also the coauthor of The Road to Wounded Knee, published in 1974.

This collection consists of 3 audiocassettes of interviews conducted by Rev. Dr. Reaves F. Nahwooks in 1998 with members of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe of the Fort Hall Reservation in Ft. Hall, Idaho. These interviews were designed to gain information on the original relationship between Shoshones and Comanches, the early history of the two tribes and the tribal members' perceptions of their identity as Shoshone-Bannocks. Also includes a 32-page transcript of the interviews, a 3-page summary of his research, and 14 inkjet prints depicting scenes from the cultural exchange festival at Fort Hall, taken by Walter Bigbee.
Biographical / Historical:
Rev. Dr. Reaves F. Nahwooks was one of the founders of the annual Shoshonean-Aztec Language Reunion, a meeting of the Shoshone, Comanche, Utes and other tribes who have a language connection with the Shoshone. As a Comanche Nation tribal member, he was particularly interested in the linguistic and cultural similarities between the Comanche and the Shoshone.

This collection contains materials relating to Edward S. Curtis' 1907-1908 investigation into the Battle of Little Bighorn. The collection contains Curtis' notes; transcriptions of eyewitness accounts of Crow scouts Curley (as told to Chas. F. Roe, published in Army & Navy Journal, March 10, 1982) and White Man Runs Him and Cheyenne chief Two Moons; and letters from General Charles A. Woodruff, who was assigned by the U.S. Army to corroborate Curtis's findings in 1908. Also includes a 1905 letter from Francis E. Leupp, Comissioner of Indian Affairs, to Curtis
Biographical / Historical:
Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) was a photographer, known for his images of Native Americans and of the American West. In preparation for his volume on the Sioux for his 20 volume publication, The North American Indian, he investigated the details of the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer's Last Stand (June 25, 1876). He first visited the battleground in 1905 and interviewed many of the Sioux participants. He returned in 1907, and with the help of three Crow scouts who were with George Armstrong Custer that day, Curtis retraced Custer's steps on his final day. Curtis submitted a report to President Theodore Roosevelt and army officials, and upon their request, chose not to publish his findings out of deference to Custer's widow, who was alive at the time. Shortly before his death in 1952, Curtis passed on his manuscript to his son Harold with the request that he find a home for his papers. Thirty-six year later, shortly before his own death, Harold donated his father's manuscript to the National Museum of American History. Curtis' manuscript was later transferred to the National Anthropological Archives.

A portfolio of 30 drawings by Spencer Asah, Jack Hokeah, Stephen Mopope, Monroe Tsatoke, and Lois Smoky--members of the Kiowa Five. This is a facsimile of the 1929 limited edition portfolio of pochoir prints published in France by C. Szwedzicki with introductory text by Oscar Brousse Jacobson. An introduction by Jamake Highwater was written for the 1979 reprinting of the portfolio. Both introductions are missing from this copy.

Photographs depicting American Indians (chiefly Cree and Chipewyan) in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Mackenzie, Canada, taken by Francis Harper on an expedition of the Geological Survey of Canada to Great Slave Lake in May-September 1914. Includes images of Cree, Ojibwa, Chipewyan, Salteaux, and Slavey Indians, as well as images of their boats, encampments, and tea dances. Each of the photographs has an associated caption, given by either Harper or the Geological Survey of Canada.
Biographical/Historical note:
Francis Harper (1886-1972) was born in Southbridge, MA to a Canadian father and German mother. He attended Cornell University, receiving a BA in 1914 and a PhD in 1925. Harper made his first trip to northern Canada in 1914, as a zoologist for the Geological Survey of Canada. During World War I, he was stationed with the US Army 79th division in France, and then in New York and Maryland. He returned to Canada in 1920, but continued to travel throughout his life. Harper also worked to trace the travels of John and William Bertram through the American South and made numerous trips to study the people and environment of the Okefinokee Swamp.

Scope and Contents note:
Photographs made by Herman J. Viola, depicting the 1973 Institute of American Indian Art meeting, Wolf Robe Hunt and his Acoma pottery, the transfer of Blue Eagle collection from Mae Abbott home to National Anthropological archives, and the 1974 Star Hawk Pow Wow in Watonga, Oklahoma. Additionally, there are photographs of NAA staff and the 1974 Acee Blue Eagle reception at NAA, possibly made by Viola. The collection also contains some photographs of Wounded Knee taken by Rev. Salvatore Genete, and copies of official portraits of Governor Aquillar of San Ildefonso Pueblo made by Harry B. Neufeld. There are also National Archives photographs of Chinese Boxer Rebellion prints, and Young watercolors and Alden sketches of American landscapes.

Much of the collection consists of portraits of participants in the NAA's American Indian Cultural Resources Training Program made by Smithsonian photographers, including Victor Krantz. Biographical/Historical note:
Herman Joseph Viola is a historian of the American Indian who was director of the National Anthropological Archives from 1972-1989 and founding editor of Prologue: The Journal of the National Archives. In 1973, he launched the American Indian Cultural Resources Training Program, designed to entice American Indians into becoming professional archivists, librarians, curators, and historians through research and internships at the NAA.

The bulk of the collection consists of photographs commissioned by Ales Hrdlicka for the Panama-California Exposition in San Diego, collected 1912-1914. They include front and profile portraits of Mongols in Urga, Mongolia, as well as Apache, Teton, Hopi, Navajo, Omaha, Osage, and Pueblo Indians. There are some full-length portraits of Apaches and views of Southwest Indian dwellings, activities, and a dance. Additionally, there are some images of United States National Museum exhibits and items from the USNM, American Museum of Natural History, and the Royal College of Surgeons in London, some of which were made by Hrdlicka in 1917.
Biographical/Historical note:
Ales Hrdlicka (1869-1943) was born in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States at the age of thirteen. Originally trained in medicine, he developed an interest in physical anthropology while working with the New York State hospitals and researching with the Department of Anthropology in the Pathological Institute of the New York State hospitals. Hrdlicka joined the Hyde Expeditions to the American Southwest and made his own expeditions to study physical characteristics of Southwest tribes. In 1903, he was appointed head of the United States National Museum's newly formed Division of Physical Anthropology.

In 1912, Hrdlicka planned and directed seven expeditions, gathering information that helped him prepare physical anthropology exhibits for the Panama-California Exposition at San Diego, California (1915). Hrdlicka hired sculptor Frank Micka to make busts of people from around the world to display in the exposition. While in the field making casts, Micka also took front and profile photographs of subjects. Hrdlicka made his own trip to photograph the people in Urga, Mongolia, making 360 images of Mongolians and some Tibetans for use in the exposition.

Images of United States National Museum anthropological exhibits at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, also called the St. Louis World's Fair. Images of the Department of Anthropology's exhibits include those of photographs and models of Mayan and Mesoamerican temples; antiquities from Mexico, Mesoamerica, and the West Indies; and American Indian, Mexican, and Mesoamerican sculptures, ceramics, tools, textiles, masks, and baskets. Photographs also document the Bureau of American Ethnology's exhibits, including "symbolic art," drawings and paintings on artifacts from tribes of the New Southwest, Plains, and Northwest Coast. The collection also includes a photograph of carved designs on a structure at Xochicales, possibly used in the exhibition or as part of its design.
Biographical/Historical note:
The National Museum's Department of Anthropology and the Bureau of American Ethnology exhibits at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition were highly integrated, and both were designed by then chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology and former head curator of the Department of Anthropology, William Henry Holmes. The exhibits were intended to illustrate "the higher culture of the native American peoples as shown in their arts and industries." The exhibit featured examples of architecture, sculpture, ceramics, metal work, water craft, musical instruments, pipes, and ceremonial objects and included models of Aztec ruins based on plans by De Lancey W. Gill.

The John Canfield Ewers Papers document his wide ranging anthropological interests from early White depictions of Native Americans to the material culture of the Plains tribes through correspondence, exhibit catalogs, field notes, illustrations, lectures, maps, photocopies of archival materials, photographs, and writings. The collection includes materials relating to his numerous research projects and publications such as his books on plains sculpture and Jean Louis Berlandier as well as his field research among the Assiniboin and Blackfoot tribes. Ewers' career as an ethnologist based in a museum is amply documented through correspondence, exhibit plans and scripts, notes, and reports showcasing his work for the National Park Service and his fifty plus years at the Smithsonian. The voluminous correspondence file highlights his close collaboration with individuals such as Stu Conner, Hugh Dempsey, Claude Schaeffer, and Colin Taylor. Ewers' graduate studies and his family are featured in Series XI. One special category of materials in this collection is Series XIV, the card files. Ewers pulled information from his field notes and other sources, classified them, and typed or wrote them up on 3x5 or 5x7 inch index cards. He then organized these files alphabetically by subject within large categories such as "Collecting Alpha by Collectors Name" or "Fur Trade and Trade Goods." The card files include correspondence and photographs and closely relate to materials throughout the rest of the collection. Though Ewers' papers are primarily textual in nature, there are graphic materials throughout his files. Series XIII features the graphic materials that Ewers kept separate from his files such as the contents of his slide cabinets. There is overlap within this series as Ewers kept multiple copies of his slides in various locations. Of note are original pencil and ink drawings from his book, The Horse in Blackfoot Culture, in Series XV. Transcripts of oral history interviews with John Canfield Ewers are also available at the Smithsonian Institution Archives.

Biographical/Historical note:
John Canfield Ewers (1909-1997) earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1931 and an M.A. in Anthropology from Yale University in 1934. Ewers began his career in museums as a Field Curator for the National Park Service. He helped design exhibits at Vicksburg National Battlefield and Ocmulgee National Monument among others. In 1941, the Bureau of Indian Affairs hired Ewers to design and establish the Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning, Montana. After a short stint in the Navy during World War II, Ewers joined the Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution. He worked at the Smithsonian for over fifty years in numerous capacities including Director of the National Museum of History and Technology (now called the National Museum of American History). Ewers' research dealt with the Plains Indians and the Blackfoot tribe in particular. Ewers wrote several books on a wide variety of topics including White artists depictions of Native Americans, Plains Indian sculpture, and the horse in Blackfoot Indian culture.
